In Techland's most recent Dying 2 Know More Episode, Tymon Smektala explained how the parkour and gravity are programmed within the game, and offers clarification as to why it may look a bit "floaty" at times.

As somebody who regularly does parkour DL1s parkour did feel a bit fast, because of how your forward momentum goes against the downward pull of gravity it does feel a bit floaty irl.

I also do parkour and it doesn't feel like that to me, it is intense and fast, kinda slow because of adrenaline but still fast, floaty but not THAT floaty

I just don't understand how people think DL had better parkour for my first point you had the leaps of a 5 year old seriously not that it ruined gameplay but still on top of that hitting precise jumps was such a hasle while in DL2 it has a auto lock on feature like in Assassin's Creed which really gives you a hand so you don't have to look down and just keep on flowing for my 3rd pojnt they added more moves to screw around with a try various combos and to add one more thing which I guess Is a helpful addition you sprint full time overall it's a upgrade to the formula DL set in motion now add a revamped combat system and a better story "DL had a ok story it wasn't bad by any means I don't understand why people say that and Craig's performance was good like bruh but what really made the story was the side quest they jus gave me much more feeling then the main story which again wasn't bad sorry for the tangent" well the story isn't out yet but with all the effort Jonah Scott put into the character of Aiden I really hope I get invested this was suppose to be about just parkour my bad

R1 was also the "Jump" button for both Mirror's Edge games - which Techland heavily got inspiration from in terms of parkour.

makes sense for a parkour game because if A was to jump then it would be way harder to turn your body while jumping where w r1 you could look in different directions while jumping instead of jumping in only one straight direction

@@DrunkGnu maybe the floatiness can be beneficial too, it can be used to quickly plan things while mid-air still or know where you’re landing next. If that makes any sense

Yeah this is one thing that some people don't quite fully get unless they do parkour etc irl, it's that when you're actually doing it it's a lot floatier and even feels slower in your perspective as opposed to how it looks from an outside perspective. That's also one of the things that can cause people to not attempt parkour irl, the fear that they won't be able to react in time or won't be able to get enough speed/momentum to do things, when in reality even a little momentum makes a huge difference in how much time you stay in the air giving you way more time to react and plan compared to just a standard jump straight up and down. Best way to imagine it is how when you see someone doing something a tad fancy like a flip they seem to stay in the air for a good while. If you've ever had an interest in doing something like parkour the best way to see if you can actually do it is by just going out and getting a feel for it irl and you'll see how floaty it really is (safely of course, you wouldn't want to cut your potential future with parkour short by injuring yourself with trying something too advanced/dangerous right from the start)

@@jakea4436 I will say I'm not the best at giving advice, but tbh anywhere that there's obstacles you can use works, as long as it's somewhere you're allowed to be + not dangerous (You see videos of people doing parkour in dangerous places often but those are also people who have been doing this for YEARS consistently and are completely confident and in control of how their bodies move and know their limits). Parks tend to be good places, forests can be too, but even simple spots with just a railing or a low wall can work too. But another good thing about parkour is that it gives you the excuse to go out and look around places you normally wouldn't pay attention to, or even places you haven't been to, and if you have friends you know are into parkour as well they might also know some spots (though don't be afraid to look for new people who are into it too, the parkour community tends to be very friendly)

Today I realized the reason they use R1 or RB for the jump button in Dying Light is so you can still control the view. Think about it. Imagine dying light with A as the jump button. You could no longer turn midair nearly as easily without going into a claw grip, which would be uncomfortable. RB as the jump button SOLVES THIS PROBLEM. I remember trying to rebind jump to A on the Xbox and it not working, then realizing much later on I preferred R1 as the jump button so much more than the A button.

Maybe its just the skill level but i have no issue with a button, it feels very fluid in tons of other games where i bunny hop and shoot alot i dont even normally go into claw at all. Just i guess muscle memory.

When you look at a co-op player in the first game, the gravity acceleration and fluidity of movement is noticeablely bad, I'm totally on board with this

As a Traceur and Parkour Instructor I can say that it is still too floaty and does not represent what happens in real life, those jumps and roll falls defy gravity but not in an immersive way, and if we compare it with DL1 you can see that Crane didn't jump that high or that far.

Part of it is most likely to help compensate for the smaller field of view and to almost simulate Aiden's reflexes. In game I think it's going to feel absolutely great

It's moreso the character in itself has incredibly powerful jump force + reflexes and agility, inhuman levels, so he's bound to not be too realistic

Crane could also shoot the fucking ground with a grappling hook after falling 15 stories and take no damage. Let’s not use DL1 like some bastion of fucking realism lmfao. You people just want an excuse to bitch. After playing, I can tell you right now the combat and parkour aren’t the problem (other than a couple of dud skills), it’s the infinite death bugs and other frustrating shit. The core of the game is fantastic though and is absolutely better than DL1 and almost better than DL + the following. After it gets some updates and some DLC, we’ll see.

I like to think the "floaty" effect is somewhat linked to Aiden's super fast reflexes, as if Techland is giving us the perspective of Aiden & how he moves around.

I don't mind the gravity, works well. I mind the transitions. The initial push of the jump button looks and feels a bit more like the "float up" button. It feels sluggish, not like a powerful push off. Other little things such as swinging from and grabbing bars. There's so much coyote time that it breaks a bit of my immersion. You simply stop falling for a sec, and THEN he grabs the bar. Simple animations like that take a lot of the weight out of it for me. I'm only a couple hours in and I'm loving the story, the characters, and the combat. Not a bash, just curious to know if anyone shares some of my views.

Floatyness may be more "realistic" but it really comes down to what feels better and is more fun. Being able to traverse quickly and fluidly is much more rewarding and exciting than slogging through obstacles for the sake of realism. I'm a bit disappointed with Techlands direction for the sequel. Glad other people like it though.

I'm glad someone here shares my view. It's not horrible, but it really does feel sluggish and slow. Couple hours in and I'm still trying to adjust, but it simply doesn't feel very good. On the other hand, the characters, combat, exploration, etc are loads of fun.

i find it funny that all these parkour "experts" in the comments assume none of us has ever jumped in our entire life, or ran around the playground. yes i have jumped, yes i have done some climbing and vaulting and jumped across gaps. and no it does not feel like youre floating, it feels like your jumping, gravity is still pulling you, and no its not as unnaturally floaty as it is in dl2. no one irl is clearing the kinds of gaps aiden is, or floating for as long as him. the point of a parkour game is to feel the flow and feel the gain of momentum, at least for me it is. gaining momentum in dl1 was such a reward for clearing a building in an efficient way. in dl2 jumping looks like it fucks up your speed flow and momentum, along with the lack of any sort of indication that you even jumped, your character just sort of oddly levitates on top of objects and it looks terrible. i am very skeptical but only time will tell i guess. EDIT: oh also everytime i see the jumping in this game i cant help but picture when yoshi kicks his legs and goes a little higher and floats.

The floatiness of the parkour makes the game feel a lot smoother. I love what they’re doing with the second dying light. There aren’t many directions this game could’ve gone without significantly downgrading from the second one. The smoother parkour, updated human combat, sleep cycle of the zombies, the whole atmosphere. Everything is different while staying true to the core mechanics of the game, and (while not the best implementation of it) added choice with a different theme to the game.

Half the reason people think it looks floaty is because of the field of view. The higher your fov the faster a game feels, and the lower the slower. Most games run around 70-80 by default, with a slider that can bump it up to 100-120. Dying Light ran 72 by default, with a max of 102 on PC only. The higher gravity worked well in this regard. Dying Light 2 on the other hand isn't meshing as well. Hopefully all platforms will have an fov slider this time, and with a higher value to boot. I'm getting tired of games releasing with no or low slider values.

when i first played dying light i saw the jump button was R1 and i lost my mind. i even went as far as rebinding it in the accessibility menu is the PS settings. i got to the main outside world in the start of the game and it all just clicked into place. imaging the pvp with X as your jump. eugh.

Techland weren't the first ones to come up with the R1 jump button. Mirror's Edge did that 5 years earlier. And probably someone even earlier too. And what about giving us what we want with some halfway-decent writing and characters.. 🤦‍♂

Man back in the days of DL1 I was totally fine with R1 as the jump button, having come off of mirrors edge on the ps3. I new right then and there I was gonna have a hell of a time.

My main problem with the floaty parkour is how sometimes, usually when jumping while hanging from a ledge, you seem to kind of stop in midair for a second and it's hard to tell if you'll make it to your target

Yeah it's not a 1:1 match for real world gravity's effects. It's only applying the 9.8m/s value to you once the game says "OK start falling.. NOW".

It'd be super cool for higher difficulties to turn down the floatiness or get rid of it in it's entirety because I imagine the parkour combos being very challenging to learn already but those who want to change to higher difficulties also recognize they have a greater understanding of the games mechanics already and probably not needing the extra time provided to chose how they want to perform a combo

Once you unlock a lot of the skills you start to not really feel the floatiness because the parkour becomes more of a chain of skills than just jumping from point A to point B

R1/RT is also the default jump button in mirror's edge where parkour is the key component. Basically it's easy to reach and almost always accessable as Ur finger doesn't leave it.

this is just a classic example of gamers who think they know more than the people who actually made the game lmao. I've played it and the "floatier" jump makes it a lot more fun. You have so many new options with parkour the old jump wouldn't work with all the new options. You can jump a bit further too cause the city is a lot wider. You genuinely just feel way cooler leaping across buildings in this game compared to the first. Also idk if it's just me, but when I played the demo of 2, the mirror's edge influence is a lot stronger which I love

Theory Aiden is Kyle cranes Son I know it’s a stretch but they look very similar they have almost the exact same skin color their voices don’t match too well but you could argue that it sounds a little bit like crane also they have the same eyecolor similar hair color and it would also explain why Aiden would know parkour but it is a stretch to say this so if anyone has any theories regarding Aden and Crane relation please leave Them ps. Aiden last name isn’t the same as cranes but that may have been to protect him from the GRE as they probably were looking for craneSo we would make sense edit I just realize that their voices have a similar pitch to them what I mean by that is they both have a deep voice crane does have slightly of a higher pitch voice but that could be chalked up to him being in his mid-20s during the events of the first game also I looked at that cranes hair more closely and it does resemble black to me at leastI’m not saying it is but it could be If anyone else thinks it looks like a different color I respect your opinion but to me it looks black I’m sorry if you don’t agree but that’s just what I see I see black hair nothing else I could see someone say it’s brown but I see black

Bumper jumper goes hard and let's non claw players jump and aim at the same time, further increasing the availability of options in ones "line" or their pathing. So I'm happy they did that too

as someone who does parkour in real life for 9 years, nope, the parkour in the game is not close to real life. i don't hate the game in case any people with no brain cells tries to come to me trying to twist my words cause i "offended" something they like. i enjoy dying light so much. heck, i play that game almost everyday. but for techland to say that dying light 2 parkour is close to real life would mean that i would have to face palm myself every time they say that. it's like me saying that assassin's creed unity's parkour, where you can literally jump 1000 ft like a jedi, is close to real life parkour. just call it the way it's supposed to be called. "exaggerated mechanics to make the gameplay more fun". in this case, aiden runs like he's taking a shit and then the shit propels him forward.

I dont like how dying light 2's floaty parkour is compared so much to real life because in real life you cant jump and 180 in the air to change your momentum or vault over something to boost yourself forward as ridiculously far as in dying light 2. Mirror's Edge catalyst can also feel floaty at times but you also feel the weight and momentum of your characters body a lot because of how much of it is on screen a lot of the time where as you can barely see your body in dying light 2 and when you do get to see it like when swinging on a bar is feels so rigid and doesnt feel like theres any real momentum. I just wish if they were trying to make it REAL that they wouldnt put in all these hyper unrealistic things that you can do in the game.

Yeah it's only applying "realistic gravity" when your 'floating timer' runs out at the peak of your jump. Everything up until then (including the 12 foot jump into the air) is supernatural spec.

In Dying Light 2 we also have the fact Aiden and several others have been injected or injected themselves with a cocktail of drugs called inhibitors which act as steroids boosting their healthy and stamina.

Its supposed to be floaty!! Did you watch this video at all. Let me put it into a different perspective, aiden is actually used to parkour and crane wasnt, aiden therefore would feel more floaty and easy. That aside watch this video again and youll realise it is generally more realistic, it fits the actual, scientifical levels of gravity on earth.. oh oh and actual parkourists and free runners agree that once in a rhythm it can feel floaty

@@Outcast_VR Mate, just because they apply a 9.8m/s acceleration value on the gravity doesn't make it as realistic as your parkour fantasies. Aiden can launch 2 storeys into the sky from a trashcan and then HOVER for a moment before feeling any effect of gravity. Fair enough, it's a game, they want to give players a moment to line the next object up, but scientific this is not..

by the way it is 9,807 m/s² . if they didn't use the " square " then that might explain why he glides , if you spend 2 secs on the air , it doubles and so on . that " square " might change the whole meaning of " reality " . if they did however , that means that the character is crazily strong . but still " reality " is not a good thing to reach for a video game cuz it has so many things that can hardly be calculated m and because you have to code such a thing , it would have flaws .

I'm sure they can do 9.8+9.8+9.8 easy enough - it just doesn't kick in until after you've hovered at the peak of your jump for half a second. It needs to kick in a little sooner.

Halo made bumper jumper straight default for me. I didn't even notice the button being R1 because I'm so used to that in every other game I play.

It's just me but looking into modding the excessive air column effects. I know there for allowing the player to easy see them, but for me I'd like to tone them down. Even if not this looks to be one of the best OWG for zombies.

I haven't played Dying Light since a year after it came out on PS4(I switched to PC around that time), I play it mostly on PC now and I completely forgot that R1 was the jump button. That's crazy hahaha. When you said it though, those memories came flashing in and I remember it did feel pretty good to play that way

Thanks for clearing it up kiwi. It's something that people are complaining about rather than praising and I appreciate you for doing that. I always thought that the reason for the floatiness was because the world had been built around being able to jump that far, but to hear it was intentional? They have achieved everything they wanted with this game before release and I cannot wait to see what they have planned for us afterwards.

So long of it short is more or less this is how real free runners sorta experience stuff and it's really not a "floaty" problem as much as it is a thing of "were rather used to virtual parkour not bring done like this"

from an outside perspective parkour seems very fast but in every jump I feel like time slows down like I'm flying so it's fairly realistic. Obviously it's a bit exaggerated but that what makes a game a game

Weather it’s intentional or not I prefer the fast paced split second decisions that led to life or death. I beat DL1 on the hardest difficulty and I don’t need the game slowed down for me… seems like something that should be on an easy difficulty

Nightmare is like the slowest pace way possible to play the game. Playing on normal is probably the fastest pace without being too easy.

I found it too easy even on the hard difficulty …. Nightmare made you nervous when your outside of a side zone as you should be when playing a zombie game.

@@Killa-rd6hj Until you get a shotgun, then you blow the head off of anything that moves and then run. Even on nightmare, demolishers are 1 to remove helmet, 1 to kill. And volatiles are just 2 blasts to the head as well.

As it should be. If I’m shooting something point blank with a shotgun to the point where I’m blowing off limbs …That sounds about right lol. Mind you tho you are only able to carry 60 rounds and as soon as you shoot once your more than likely going to have shoot a majority of your ammo cause the runners don’t stop when your shooting.

I guess the strange feeling isn't exactly the gravity velocity per se. Maybe the acceleration is tuned down a little bit, hence the longer hang time. Doesn't really bother me. Seems like a nice touch in terms of accessibility and probably fits better regarding the game world's geography. Let's wait and see. After all, the modding community is surely planning on changing some things to accomodate the wide array of tastes.

The gravity doesn't seem to apply until you've completed your upward motion and even then there's a short delay (you seem to 'hover' at the top for a second) before the downward forces kick in. It feels just a tad floatier than real-life (I mean, the sheer distances you can launch off objects is ridiculous) but it's a game so SOME liberties can be afforded :P

Tbh the jump button being R1 or RB wasn’t anything new. Mirrors edge had the same mechanics and while watching the first dying light gameplay I thought they would do the same.

For me it wasn't so much the floatiness that looked off but rather the distance the character seems to be able to jump. It's hard to tell when he's moving, but most jumps look much longer than what you would be capable of in real life. I think it's rather the movement speed of the characters. They move much faster than one would in real life so the game doesn't feel slow and you don't spend all game running somewhere. So I'm guessing they doubled the gravity in the first game to balance it out and just removed it here? But I guess we'll see how it feels when the game releases.

The running drive me nuts. It seems so off. Like I'm never moving fast enough. I really wanted to enjoy the game but I just can't get around the movement. Saying it more realistic is kinda stupid. This is a video game about zombies and jumping wild distances off buildings. Realistic shouldn't be brought up. The game should flow good and to this just doesn't do it.

I personally like the gameplay of DL2 more than the first game. It feels more satisfying and intuitive. Once you unlock perks and level up, damn it feels good.
