This video is a wild ride, so sit back, strap yourself in, and enjoy.
Every now and then a little gaming miracle happens; lost video games are found and preserved for all to enjoy. Today we're looking at several cases of lost games, why they were cancelled, and how they were found, including Super Mario 64 Disk Version, Nuclear Rush and the SEGA VR, as well as The California Raisins and Bio Force Ape for the NES.

The story about the California Raisins prototype is nuts. Starting out with being given to a retro gamer worker after someone's kid wanted an xbox, to the poor guy losing his life over an unfortunate argument. Brandon Murphy could have easily sold it for thousands, but knew something like it deserved to be shared with the world rather than held hostage for the sake of value. Dude will forever be a legend

sadly not all lost games are that lucky. There is a copy of the Resident evil 1.5 (the 80% build) that was found. The collector refuses to sell it or even dump it. So instead we have the 40% that was obtained that people are trying to rebuild.

It's wild to think that the Crazy Raisins game would still be lost today if the kid it was meant to go to hadn't gotten an XBOX. Really makes you think about how many lost or valuable prototypes are just lying around with people who have no idea about what they own.

yo I once bought Mario Paint with the original Box, Mouse and Mousepad at a flea marked for 6 bux. pretty sure the woman who sold it had no idea what it was and how much it was worth. I ended up giving her my last 5 bucks, which is a pretty sweet deal, everything worked perfectly and looked really new. stuff like that happens all the time if you only care to look hard enough

Yeah man, sometimes you get maybe not prototypes but some insane deals, a few years ago i got an OG Diablo 2 Battlechest CIB with the guide books, LoD expansion and the battlenet codes still unused (well unsued until i tried them expecting a “code already claimed” message but instead i got diablo 2 on a friend’s account) and everything like it was never touched on a flea market, i paid 2 bucks

I paid 5 bucks for a box with over 100 NES games and sold them for over 1000 bucks thanks to copies of festers quest and others. I also came across copies of Spiderman Carnage on Sega complete in "like new" conditiom for 2 bucks a piece. Its insane how much good stuff is just lying around for a few bucks.

Here's something more you can learn about the California Raisins! During the production of Back to the Future, a shady marketing guy landed a deal to promote the Raisins in said movie by promising them that "this movie would do for California Raisins what ET did for Reece's Pieces." The deal was largely unknown to the director, Robert Zemeckis. He wasn't informed until late in production that he was supposed to add a promotion to the film. Ultimately, an ad for the California Raisins was placed on the bench a hobo is seen sleeping on near the end of the movie, and that was it. Both Robert Zemeckis and the California Rasins Advisory Board were very unhappy with the deal, and since then Zemeckis has avoided having any product promotions in his movies.

Actually thats one of bad sides (IMO) they're more like speculators than collectors, having the only real copy (digital or otherwise) would push the value so much it could turn into tens, if not hundreds of thousands of dollars on offers alone. So having a digital rom copy immediately drops its value as its mystique as something unseen is immediately gone.

The dumbest ones are the ones who buy an undumped cart and then refuse to dump it unless they "recoup their losses" for buying the cart via donations. Like. no buddy, you spent your money willingly and you knew what you were getting into. You "lost" nothing. Note that I don't mean donations to acquire the item like with Bio Force Ape; they'd always had the cart in-hand before. I haven't seen that in a while but I remember some dudes doing that with Genesis carts like 15 years ago.

The one about the California Raisons is depressing all around. From how such a special game was canned by Capcom over something as silly as "It was not made in Japan", to how the collectors clearly just wanted it to keep in a collection and never let the public experience it considering how the offers dropped as soon as he released the ROM, to the horrible way Brandon Murphy was killed at such a young age by a roomate over just some stupid money and possessions.

Bio Force Ape looks like one of those impossible games, how on earth did they squeeze that much speed on a smooth scrolling game on the NES? And that character animation is way beyond what I'd normally expect from that console.

Maybe the game was designed for an enhancement chip? I doubt the base NES hardware could handle the fast multi-directional scrolling on display here. But with an enhancement chip, fast multi-directional scrolling is possible on the NES.

@@RazorEdge2006 at that point in time it's almost certain that it used one of the enhancement chips, but even then it's pretty impressive. A game like Super Mario Bros 3 was capable of doing multi directional scrolling and was a technical showcase but the speed of Bio Force Ape is just bonkers, it's the kinda stuff I'd expect from the Genesis or SNES.

@@Dr0dd ... if I remember correctly, Seta would later develop a title for the SNES, "Nosferatu" ...an impressive game which played like Prince Of Persia as a sidescrolling brawler w/ platforming & puzzle-solving elements done in a Gothic horror style & theme, tho sadly it doesn't seem to have made as big of a splash as it should have. This further supports the appearance of Seta being auteurs within the gaming industry, focusing on both technical brilliance & artistic quality in their work.

@@marti5420 its different with other historical items. For games, the best way to preserve them is make them accessible using newer hardware. For ancient pieces that are so fragile you need to keep then inside glass to preserve its value else it will just turn to dust. Video games need to be shared to be preserved, ancient historical artifacts need to be kept untouched to be preserved. Some historical pieces can also only be preserved by a handful of professionals whose work consists of very specialized processes that cant be given to just an ordinary joe.

Its funny you mentioned this as in a community I'm in we had the prototype to the cancelled Battlebots video game finally posted online after nearly 20 years being lost media. I played it and it's actually mostly playable, finding lost video games is truly a wonderful thing :)

something i always liked about Bio Force Ape was the care with the animations coupled with the insane scrolling speed. the character crouches on the platform going up, and the hair flutters, gives a superb sense of speed going on, like hes actually withdstanding the force of the air as the platform goes up.

Some other "lost" games that were recovered with comparable stories: SFC/Satellaview - Cooly Skunk (technically most things that were on Satellaview are like this, but Cooly Skunk is especially notable for it being a canceled retail release) Genesis - Akira Game Boy Color - Resident Evil Playstation - Clayfighter Extreme Famicom Disk System - Aliens Dreamcast - Propeller Arena This can end up becoming a long list easily.

The California Raisins one is particularly strange to me because I very much remember renting a California Raisins game for the NES when I was a kid. Clearly I'm just misremembering things but it's definitely eerie as even the screenshots and label seemed familiar.

The animations in Bio Force Ape are great. I really like how the character is crouching on the elevator platforms that go up in very fast speeds, as if he is unable to stand up because of the heavy force of gravity. I don't remember seeing such thing in any other game.

I got to try one of those Sega VR headsets once in 1993. I was interviewing for a job with a game company in Tulsa, OK (Greg Zumwalt's company that made Michael Jordan in Flight) and the company was supposedly working on a game for this VR headset and let me try it out, I think it was just running the tank game they showed in this video but I was impressed with it.

Very cool video and fun to revisit the memories of my time at Futurescape and NUCLEAR RUSH which I worked on and it was my first Video Game job! I had a pal at Sega at that time period and he thought he heard NR was cancelled because of the head gear over heating or something like that. It is interesting years later learning more about the reasons of cancellation. We had headgear at Futurescape and I was into VR at the time and had a blast shooting the ships I built! Anyways having experienced VR now man what we worked on seems so primitive!

I love reading through old gaming mags and seeing previews about games I don't remember. Turns out I didn't remember a lot of them because they ended up getting canceled. The highest number I've seen so far is 6 canceled games in one issue, and I believe 4 of them for for the Sega CD.

I had to do a double take when looking at some older photos of my uncles. What I thought was my three+ uncles donning blackface was, in actuality, all of them doing a combined group costume of the California Raisins. I still am not sure how or why I know of the Raisins, from the 90s.

The moonwalk part of that Raisins game reminded me I was replaying Super Metroid for the first time in 20 years the other day and surprised to see 'Moon Walk' in words right there on the special settings menu. Kinda neat for a Nintendo first-party game to have a lil reference there to Jackson who was generally a Sega icon (with the Moonwalker game being a popular title in the early days of the MD/Genesis and still fun to play today even if it's a pretty simple game, there's something just very fun about playing as Jackson and listening to those 16-bit renditions of his classic tunes).

There's so many games you could talk about. Pokemon Spaceworld Gold/Silver are some of the big ones, but just a few weeks ago a completed build of Star Wars Battlefront 3 was found. Even games that have since been released, like Earthbound Beginnings, Star Fox 2, etc.

There's something so heartwarming and fantastical about hearing of a game lost to time, but ultimately discovered and saved to preservation. Thank you to all who dedicate their time to making sure video games can be saved for all to play and experience. And rest in peace, Brandon Murphy, a true legend who's untimely death and sacrifice lives on with the California Raisins prototype, now thankfully preserved for history.

The HMD used by Sega VR was overseen by Virtuality in the UK. My mum's partner at the time worked for Virtuality back in the 90s and he used to take me into work sometimes back in the 90s, they had a few HMDs and VR hardware and made it for quite a few companies that needed VR for whatever. I had a few prototype Virtuality HMDs and some that failed testing that I used to take apart to learn how they worked like I did anything electronic as a kid. Wish I'd kept some of them but I didn't know how cool they were at the time haha

California Raisins looks very similar to Tom & Jerry NES game released in 1990. Curiously Radiance Software then worked with Hi-Tech software which was the developer of T&J. I know there is not timing btw them, but it got my attention.
