Funny fact. The story begins with commander keen. Commander Keen was id Software's first big hit in the early '90s, and it stars an 8-year-old boy called Billy Blazkowicz who fights cartoony aliens and vegetable people with his pogo stick. It's a pretty Nintendo-esque game, which is explained by the fact that it started as a project to bring Super Mario games to PC. A couple of years later, the same company released Wolfenstein 3D, a violent first-person shooter about an Allied soldier shooting his way through a castle full of Nazi atrocities. The name of the protagonist? William Blazkowicz, Billy's grandfather. There's more: id Software's next hit was Doom, an even more violent shooter about a futuristic soldier fighting space demons (or something magic: nobody's quite sure). The identity of Doom's protagonist has never been officially revealed by id Software, but it's been hinted that he's a member of the Blazkowicz family, too: In Wolfenstein RPG, the Nazis summon a demon called the "Harbinger of Doom." William Blazkowicz defeats the demon by cutting off an arm and a leg, and as he's banished back into hell, the demon swears to return one day and haunt William's descendants. If you've played the original Doom games, you might remember the exact same demon from the game with an cyborg leg and a arm rocket launcher.

2:50 I completely disagree with his statement, especially if the game is a singleplayer experience. The story makes everything you go through more interesting, if it's well written.
@OtakusRUs210 жыл бұрын
Very much agreed, but this was a time where games were revolutionary for what they were: interactive digital media. There were already major means of storytelling media. (Although, funny enough, this was also the peak of the Point and Click Adventure genre, which was heavily focused on storytelling). But as we've seen many times, games are a great means of interactive storytelling, even when coinciding intense gameplay. Many indy developers realize this, and exploit it to great effect. Unfortunately, many Triple-A developers in today's market seem to agree with Carmack, clearly thinking that style over substance is what will make them the most money (which, also unfortunately, it probably will).
@OtakusRUs210 жыл бұрын
You know, as a follow-up to my previous comment, I honestly think Doom ended up better for the lack of story involved in it. The few quips of text we get add a great amount of atmosphere, and the addition of heavy amounts of cinematic, dialog, and (especially) additional characters would have really bogged the intense feel and gameplay of the game. Not to mention, the graphics and technology simply weren't good enough to give proper and truly engaging interactive storytelling back then, like we have now. Wrapping up, I think Doom came out about as perfectly as it could for its time.

2:48 Man. I disagree with John Carmack. Story is some game genres like RPGS or even stealth games (Metal Gear Solid) help make the game feel more like a movie. Hence the need for a story line in a video game.
@brazwen10 жыл бұрын
I agree. Story is one of the many features that helps make the game immersive.
@WilliamHButtlicker10 жыл бұрын
I'd say it depends on the game. You're totally right about RPGs though, a lot of the fun revolves on the story and the universe it's depicted in. But we can't deny games like Minecraft, which have zero story and are still extremely immersive! But yeah, good stories have the tendency to stay longer in mind. I remember a lot more of GTA San Andreas' story than GTAV's story, which makes me want to play SA a lot more than V, even today!
@AustralianReviewer10 жыл бұрын
William H. Buttlicker For some genres, it works better with others then say... I don't know, arcade games. Where story doesn't matter. First person shooters? I understood his point there. The story doesn't need to be in the game. Though the point still remains that story is vital for some games like Final Fantasy or even Resident Evil.
@WilliamHButtlicker10 жыл бұрын
Nick's Game Reviews You're definitely right! In fact, it's the exact reason why I don't play the latest FF or RE games; the last one's stories didn't do it for me at all and it makes me not want to continue the series. So yeah, story can be important. But I was making the Minecraft point because I still play it after 3 years and still enjoy, with 0 story to back it! :D

William H. Buttlicker I reckon Final Fantasy IX has the best story in the series. Followed by X.

Since a lot of people are arguing about the topic of plots in video games, I'll just say this: The importance of plot in a video game highly relies on what _type_ of game you're going for; The classic Doom games benefited from a lack of plot, as it was meant to be more of a fast-paced action game. RPGs and adventure games are more story driven because gameplay itself is slower and more deliberate; the players _expect_ fine details as a result. A plot-heavy action game can feel awkward. (See: Super Paper Mario) A story-only game has the potential to be even worse. (See: David Cage's drivel) A lot of great games are known for finding a good medium; The Dark Souls games, for example, have an ignorable plot, but it's rich and detailed for the players who care. Other games like Shovel Knight and Skullgirls only have small snippets of plot, but great care was put into those moments. In conclusion, Libya is a country of contrast.
@venomtest10 жыл бұрын
Except you openly mention Dark Soul's way of telling narrative, which would have enhanced Doom if it was chosen. It would have provided a richer experience for those who like narratives, and it wouldn't have slowed down the game if the player wasn't interested. Plain and simple, a stronger narrative provided in the same way as Dark Souls would have made the game better, and because of the director's ignorance, we as consumers were left with an inferior product. That shouldn't be defended.

Green Sanic Except that's not what I was saying at all. The lore in Dark Souls is 100% ignorable to those who aren't interested, because it's told through level design and scenery. While I do like a nice story in games(especially if it's well written and have likable characters) a game doesn't need a story to be good, but a game with a story needs to be good, otherwise no matter how great the story is, not a lot of people will sit through a shitty game to know what's gonna happen next, and not a lot of people will want to revisit a game with okay, but not fun, gameplay, the only reason I'd see someone do that is for achievements. Doom for an example, is just pure, unadulterated fun, while it does have a story, the game and gameplay aren't centered around it, and it's there just as a brief concept to explain what the shit is happening and why the fuck you have to shoot demons in the face, you play Doom for it's gameplay, and the lack of proper story didn't stop it from being a massive hit as well as a great and fun game to play, even generations after its release. Then we have games like Spec Ops: The Line, great and very well written and executed story, but the gameplay is just eh, the game isn't fun to play and doesn't encourage you to replay it multiple times either, which(in my opinion) makes it feel like wasted money, because you already feel satisfied playing through it once, while Doom, you always have that itch to go back and play it again, and it will be a blast to plow through the game just like always. I don't know if that's what Carmack wanted to express, and ended up sounding like a jerk, but I know that what I said is my opinion, and what I believe. Which is rather hypocritical of me because I fucking love Metal Gear.
@jf_paes15899 жыл бұрын
Fire Emblem don't have shitty gameplay, it's just a turn based SRPG series, a really good one at that. You may find the gameplay boring from time to time, to which I agree, but shitty it ain't. And Heavy Rain is an odd one, the main factor that makes it great is not just the Story, but it's replayability. Heavy Rain have a bunch of branching paths that leads to different kinds of situations and endings, encouraging the player to visit it more than once, that's the true greatness of the game. Now take Beyond: Two Souls for example, it's the same thing, shit gameplay and great story, but it's an okay game at best, and why is that? Because the game don't have what made its predecessor so good, the branching situations, Beyond is a stupidly linear QTE fest that can be ended in about thee hours and you're done, there's nothing else to the game unlike Heavy Rain.

"Story in videogames is not that important" Yeah, in the old days, for make a good video game you just need a badass character, a shotgun, and a sh*tload of monsters. Hotline Miami is a modern expample. I know there s a history, but its kinda hidden, so it s an example after all.
@whathefrig9 жыл бұрын
Marlon Lopez Troya In the old days it was just about playing for the fun of defeating bosses and enemies while traversing the environment. I'm sad new games feel like they need to hammer story into every fucking crevice of itself to seem good, then people look at it as art. What happened to video games?
@cabeza2519 жыл бұрын
BlueSparks Some Videogames can be considered as art. Look at Half Life, it was fun and it has an interesting storyline. also MGS, And a lot of modern games. now is considered as the best game of the video game generation. But i dont think games like Doom, Duke Nukem and very, very old one games deserve a story line, hope this will happen with the new DooM. We don t wanna see any fucking shit of DoomGuy talking about how war changued or that he s tired of killing demons, we wanna see BLOOD.
@whathefrig9 жыл бұрын
Marlon Lopez Troya Yeah but gameplay should be the main focus with story along it like Half-Life, fuck games that are story and story only. Why would anybody want to play a shitty game, even if the story is good?
@cabeza2519 жыл бұрын
BlueSparks Yeah, i think it s just like movies, they have to have an interesting story and being fun. Some games follow the concept you are talking and end up being boring or just being considered as "if games and movies had a baby" Like MGS I dont like much of them, i ve just played the first one and MGS 2. MGS4 Has LONG cutscenes.. I m going back to HL, that game dont need cutscenes t being a fun and interesting game, but no, the rest of AAA Companies still using cutscenes as "to maek d gaem moar intrsting and culturic". I m agree with your concept, the gameplay should be focus in story and at the same time make the player something important on it.

My only problem with Markiplier is how much his content has changed since he started getting so popular. I know, I know, I sound like a butthurt fan "ermergerd mark sold out, fail lulz". But for reals, he used to be more down to earth, now he just plays crappy games, records approximately 14mins of footage and calls that a days work, "rages" for the lulz(e.g. attempting a game task once and failing and then "rages"), just screams randomly, does the same overhauled jokes and trying to get more popular by doing collab videos. It's fine if you like that stuff, but I actually missed when he actually attempted to play the game, took it seriously and played something with more substance. Just my opinion, I'm glad I discovered Cryoatic :)

I wonder why they included that Carmack quote about stories not mattering in games? He said that like 12 years ago, I'm sure his opinion has changed (ever heard of RAGE???) Even so, Doom does good with it's minimalist story... But it isn't *no* story, there's pages of text every 10 or so levels that explains what's going on and why you're doing what you're doing in both Doom 1 and Doom 2. I love DYKG but I hate when they misrepresent information, which happens *a lot* more than you might think... If you fancy yourself a bit of a "video game historian" I really reccommend fact checking before talking about DYKG stuff with your gaming buds. Just my 2 cents!
@InnagadadaDBZ10 жыл бұрын
If you're remotely interested in a series, Did You Know Gaming is a good starting point to discover new facts. But I don't think anyone would recommend using it as a source if you're actually serious about learning the the entire history of a franchise. Just because of the short length and rapid-fire structure of the writing, the more cursory details are glossed over. That's not a bad thing in-and-of itself, but it can possibly lead to some confused or perhaps unintended perceptions. Remember that these videos are put out weekly, and they are made by humans who are imperfect. There will always be some things that slip through the cracks. Or some things that just do not occur to the folks behind the scenes. It's currently not possible to fix hard audio or video after the video has been uploaded, unlike an article or wiki page. Your criticism is certainly valid. But you should be aware that the folks at Did You Know Gaming have an interest in being as accurate and fair as possible.

DoomKid well... Rage story is not realy important in the game. I love Rage, I think it's overlook on many levels. But you don't play Rage for the story like you would for Planescape Torment. Yes, for Carmack the story was never important and I would also say that the only thing that realy matters to him was the engine. The story, the gameplay, that was always for his co-workers. Carmack is a genius, he is an engineer but he is not a story teller. That is not to say that Doom "story" is not important. Then again I wouldn't qualify it as a real story but rather as a background, an ambience.

I'll have to disagree on Carmack's views on game stories, if video gaming is to be accepted as a form of media alongside TV, Movies and Books, it has to have a strong and immersive narrative other wise gaming is seen as more of a hobby than a media format. It's reasoning like that statement that makes those unfamiliar with gaming panic about gratuitous violence in video games. They see it as just a hobby akin to sports or drawing rather than a form of entertainment.
