The most restrictive definition I've heard is three consecutive goals (ie: no other goals scored by anyone else) in the same period. (This is like the '50 in 50' being restricted to the first fifty team games from the season opener onwards, perhaps, in that the first 'natural hat trick' (ie: three consecutive goals) may have occurred in one period so that is the standard for the feat) The normal definition I have heard is three consecutive goals in the same game. I am unsure of empty netters not counting, but not allowing them could make sense for the same reason as the 'in one period' restriction, if the first was scored on a goalie for all three goals. But I have never heard of a hat trick being referred to as 'natural' if any goals were scored by another player between the first and third goals.
