The St. Louis Blues have tendered offer sheets to Oilers defensemen Philip Broberg and forward Dylan Holloway earlier today...
Honestly, I knew it was to good to be true. This offseason couldn't have started any better and look what's happened. I personally believe that if Ken Holland or just any GM that was respected was hired by the Oilers this would not have happened... and I strongly believe this. But who knows.............
Anyway, now the Oilers have some work to do. In this video I breakdown the situation and give you my thoughts on what I think the Oilers should do and will do!
Thanks for all the continued support guys, y'all are absolutely crushing it. Seriously means the world. If you like what you are seeing be sure to leave a like, drop a comment down below as I read every single one and subscribe as we're on the road to 10K subs and I would love for you to join this journey with me.
Thanks for everything guys and see you in the next one!

According to RFA rules, if a team matches an offer sheet, they can't turn around and trade that player for at least a year.

Nope, they'll likely match both offers and perhaps trade after a year. They are BOTH 1st Rd picks that are finally ready to be full time NHLers. After 1 season, they can get much more than a 2nd and a 3rd back.

The Blues' proposed offer to Broberg contains what I'd say is a ridiculously high per-season cap hit for a d-man with nowhere near the point production of Quinn Hughes. A near-US$4.851 million per-season cap hit is well above the US$1-to-US$1.5-million range that I'd call reasonable for a rather unproven d-man. Yet crazier things have happened, with last September the signing by the Sens of d-man Jake Sanderson, by then having entered the final season of his entry-level contract with the same team, to a ridiculous 8-season US$64.4-million contract. The term may be a bit much but my goodness is the per-season cap hit, US$8.05 million, in the stratosphere, on a team with no post-2017 playoff appearance just yet. There comes a point when it's just time to let players who are offer-sheeted go.

My Initial reaction was: Damn! Armstrong screwed us. He probably wouldn't have pulled this crap if Holland was still around. Then, after some contemplation: 1) This is a normal course of business and management should have had this scenario played out the day that they extended the QOs (the day after the draft). 2) They should match both because: Both are first round picks that are worth far more than a 3rd (Holloway) and a 2nd (Broberg). The Oilers are a contending team, and should act like one instead of letting another franchise dictate their roster. After one year, the Oilers can trade either of them away for far more than a 3rd and a 2nd rd pick if they choose to do so. 3) To make the money work, the team will now need to BOTH put Kane on LTIR (or have him agree to a trade) AND trade away Ceci or Kulak. Kane going on LTIR is now almost a must. 4) The Oilers are an older team with some slower players like Perry and Ryan, so letting the 2 youngest players , both great skating, leave would be a terrible decision. 5) It's like ChiaPete was put on this earth just to damage the Oilers as long as he's alive. Overall: It's just business. You knew that this was a high possibility (both were on the lists for most likely RFAs to get offer sheets) after all. Wait the full 7 days, and match the offers. They can be over the cap and fix the cap before the season starts.

The AboveAverage KZbin man certainly claimed the Oilers should never have hired Stan Bowman. Although I agree with the KZbinr on the Oilers' having been wrong to hire Bowman, whether because of that hiring the Blues offer-sheeted Broberg and Holloway isn't as clear. Both players completed entry-level contracts and from the Oilers received qualifying offers although it would've been unusual for neither to have received a QO as: - neither would've been allowed to exercise arbitration rights after having received a QO - more commonly restricted free agents with eligibility to, upon the expiries of their contracts, exercise arbitration rights at times won't get to do so because only if they receive QOs do they get to exercise such rights Carter Savoie, who in June completed his entry-level contract, unusually for pending RFAs not eligible to exercise arbitration rights, didn't receive a QO, sending him into unrestricted free agency. TBD still is whether he'll play under contract to an NHL team or have to take his chances signing an AHL, ECHL or even overseas contract.

@wainber1
@wainber1 2 ай бұрын
It's tempting to say that Ceci should be gone, and it's possible Broberg will turn out to be a better d-man than Ceci. Does Broberg have that Quinn Hughes (QH) point-producing quality in him? To get to that I will start with QH, who the Canucks had selected 7th during the 2018 NHL Entry Draft and whose point production in the NCAA, for the University of Michigan, was good for a d-man. It's tempting to say the Canucks massively overpaid for QH although he had on average put up well over ½ point/game (PPG) during his 1st 2 seasons of NHL action (2019-20 and 2020-21) including in the 2020 postseason. He hasn't skipped too many beats and last regular season he actually produced on average OVER a PPG. How has Broberg done by contrast? Even ½ PPG at the NHL level in regular-season or postseason play has been beyond what so far he's managed. Furthermore, he's been up-and-down, and that's DESPITE his having been a top-10 pick. Arber Xhehaj, who didn't even get drafted by an NHL team, played for 2 different Ontario Hockey League teams before signing, for the 2022-23 NHL season, an entry-level contract with the Habs, who offered him, on his 2nd contract, a US$1.3-million per-season cap hit (PSCH) over 2 seasons. Does Broberg deserver a higher PSCH than Xhehaj, with the latter d-man's ability to throw the body around? I dunno if Broberg is a heavy hitter but Nikita Zadorov sure was with the Canucks this past season. Back in 2018 the Habs drafted centre Jesperi Kotkaniemi, fresh off a season with Ässät in his homeland's top men's pro-hockey league (Liiga), at 3rd overall, and signed him to an entry-level contract during the month after having drafted him. Yet even with his having averaged UNDER ½ PPG during regular-season and postseason play with the Habs, the Canes surprisingly offered him a 1-season US$6.1-million contract that he hadn't hesitated to sign. The Habs didn't match that crazy # although it might've been good for them that they hadn't. Maybe it won't be so bad for the Oilers to let go of Broberg because as much as d-men may take more time to develop than forwards, there's only so much a team that drafted a player can do if an offer sheet contains a crazy PSCH.
@toddjhunking8495
@toddjhunking8495 2 ай бұрын
@@wainber1 so you gage a defensemen by points per game when there's such a thing as it staying at home defenseman. QH might be good in Vancouver but I know very much he would make it to stop line. But that's off topic. The real question is, is Philip Broberg worth more then a 2nd round pick? In my opinion he is. Is 4.5m an over pay? At the moment it might be but in a year or two I doubt it.
@wainber1
@wainber1 2 ай бұрын
@@toddjhunking8495 Is Broberg worth more than the US$1.3 million per-season cap hit the Habs gave Arber Xhehaj on his most recent contract? Average points per game is an aspect for defensemen but there are those who are simply defensive, and that’s not such a bad thing. While a per-season cap hit of no more than US$1.5 million is ideal for Broberg, I would, if an Oiler fan, want that team, to be careful about repeating the same mistake the Senators did with Jake Sanderson (who last September, weeks away from playing games during what would be the last season of his entry-level contract, signed an eight-season US$64.4 million contract that was to start the following July).

Believe me, I am no fan of Bowman, the dude should be banned for life, but not sure I see how or why this could be construed as his fault. St Louis sees that EDM is in cap trouble and trying to take advantage of that. In NO way is the cap situation in EDM Bowman's fault....yet. Offer sheets typically come about for 3 reasons: 1. the tendering team sees something in the player(s) that they think the other team has missed or undervalues (see: Kesler, Backes, O'Reilly); 2. The tendering team is desperate to make a splash to appease fans (Weber, Penner, Vanek, Aho etc); 3. Revenge (Bernier, Kotkeniemi). This is probably a case of #1.

If Bowman and try and keep holloway and let go Broberg it wont be the worst.. Thats an incredible stretch to blame this on the hiring of Bowman. I sure hope your content doesnt continue down this path. Unfortunately the offer sheets were made and it poses isssues for the oilers. Broberg getting paid that much will mean bouchard and possibly ekholm on his re sign in a few years are going to cost more now. Holloway has already shown that hes injury prone so paying him just shy of 3 million per year and having to re sign in 2 more years is both hard to let them walk but tough to pay that much.
