I’m German and I appreciate your coverage, Dylan. But calling the FDP “social-liberal” is a bit of an anachronism. They were 50 years ago, but they threw out the social aspect in favour of being lobbyists for the money-class.

The BSW is not left leaning. It is a coalition of red browns, Terfs, tankies and class reductionist.

There's soooooome arguably left leaning financial policies they propose, but yeah. (If you speak German, Maurice Höfgen did a video or two on their policies.) You described them pretty accurately.

@@fabianelsen3716 Maurice Höffgen*, but yeah. The BSW stands for Bündniss (alliance) Sahra Wagenknecht, which tells you all you need to know on where their loyalities lie. The BSW is mainly a grifter party with the chance to become a socially conservative, economically progressive party.

Yep. Similar to Galloway's outfit here in the UK. "Left-wing" but gay people are immoral and immigrants are bad, and Russia is justified because NATO something something. How can you claim to want worker solidarity when you actively look down on them for immutable characteristics? Charlatans

The CDU won't improve Ukraine's situation much, I fear. The taurus rockets will help, but Merz' CDU has honed in on austerity in Germany, as well as the EU. This would decreas the publics support even further. Many of the people voting for the AfD and BSW in the recent elections did so, because they perceive their own economic situation worsening, as aid for Ukraine increases. There weren't any statements by the CDU countering that fals dichotomy - To the contrary, Merz falsly claimed, people from Ukraine came to Germany as 'welfare tourist'. The best case scenario for Ukraine would be a strong vote for the green party, as they have been consistent and increasing in their support. Unfortunately, they are the scapegoat at the moment. The CDU declared them their main 'enemy', which is rich considering the rising threat of the AfD.

I suspect that Scholz did not expect anything of substance to come from the call. The main talking point of opponents of aid for Ukraine is that there needs to be a diplomatic solution instead, which is obviously delusional, but still constantly being brought up. Scholz will probably use the call to claim that he actually tried to get negotiations started. Most of what will be happening in German politics until the election will be motivated by someone's campaign, potentially with disregard for consequences outside of Germany. We should also expect long and tedious coalition negotiations after the election. I expect a rough couple of months.

This is absolutely the idea. There's no way he believed this call would lead to anything. SPD leadership just wanted to have something to appeal to the appeasement crowd.

Really hope they didn't talk about going back to business as usual, after Trump "finishes" the war in 24 hours. By "finishes" I mean gives Ukraine to Russia.

do you know how many people died the last time we went to war? Every german post 45 was raised under the creed of 'never again' to be clear, i dont agree with their conclusions i personally think that for a lasting peace we need to show strength toward this current dictatorship. But chalking it all up to fear or greed when we have literally cut off our own powersupply thereby knowingly and willingly plunged our economy into crisis, and are still the second largest supporter of ukraine is plain wrong. There is a real desire for peace and reconciliation with the russian people driving most of these people, misguided or not.

@@Luggaster I sympathize with the sentiment of wanting genuine reconciliation, however it takes two to tango and that means no matter how much good faith you bring to the table, if the other party has a vested interest in undermining your civilization’s democratic infrastructure, and cartoonishly undermine and violate your laws, sovereignty and dignity, reconciling with said entity in its current form is completely impossible

@@lachlanthomaslangmead1651 i know, i am not arguing against that. In hindsight the 'change through trade' policies of the last decades seem naive but i do get frustrated that foreign sources often seem oblivious to the actual motivations and conflicts that drive our politics.another thing is that the eastern german states were integrated into the country merely 34 years ago, a process of shock-capitalism in which most eastern german wealth and industry almost immediately landed in the hands of westerners with money - those are the states where AFD and BSW are now strong, and where the people learned russian in school and are now very easy pickings for russian propaganda. Add to that the fact that sanctions on russia and from russia are now causing a lot of new disruptions in the economy and you get an ideal of how volatile the internal situation of our young republic is. The actual fears scholz has have alot less to do with russia than with our own society breaking apart.
