Ben Simmons would be like Giannis except he is scared of failure, whereas Giannis is not. Giannis keeps trying to shoot free throws and threes even though his percentage is below average. It’s so amazing to see actual polar opposites of players in the NBA. What I mean is Ben Simmons came into the league with all the hype, all the talent, son of professional basketball player and a great life. Winning rookie of the year his second year and viewed as the next big thing. On the flip side you have a Giannis who came in unknown, passed over, humbling tough upbringing and no talent. Ben Simmons’ problem is that he has never had to struggle for his success. He’s always been miles above his teammates and opponents and that’s his downfall. Its just like the “gifted” kid in school who was knocking out 10 books a week and didn’t have to study only for college to absolutely destroy them. Any new activity that isn’t immediately mastered gets cast aside because they’re afraid of failure and not being the dominant person they’re used to. That’s a good breakdown. I think the situation you mentioned is why my cousin who has played 12 years in the MLB has his son playing little league baseball against older kids. He wants his son to learn what it is like to fail and struggle against older kids and keep working to get better vs being the best 6 year old on the field and dominating all the other 5-6 year olds. My cousin went through his ups and downs in the majors being demoted to the minors a few years into his MLB career, All Star World Series being traded injured being cut. If his son makes it to the majors he will be prepared by playing against older kids and knowing what it is like to be challenged and face adversity. Simmons as mentioned probably dominated everyone as a kid never had to learn to adapt or add elements to his game by the time he got to the NBA and teams figured it out in the playoffs it was too late. It’s a shame that he didn’t put in the work get a professional shooting coach to really help him with his shot he would definitely be a top player in the league if he just had an average jump shot and was a better free throw shooter.
@CYMotorsport2 жыл бұрын
Have a lot of die hard Philly fans friends and that was one thing they called out early: his position adjustment left him with very odd matchups which were uniquely conducive to rebounds. Notice his triple doubles were rarely eye watering in their dominance with a lot of spot jump shot kick out assists thanks to his bringing the ball up and embiid option. When he’s forced to create from a positional that’s technically not natural to him, it’s no wonder. He built his entire game and confidence on one style. When shit hit the fan, he couldn’t fall back on perimeter play but had to double down as a point guard. Can you imagine how foreign that’s gotta feel

Ben doesn’t even need to form a three point shot. All he had to do was practice free throws so his fouls wouldn’t be a complete waste and strategy for opponents. Any kid can practice free throws and get pretty damn consistent with them as long as you try and put effort into it. Even I went from throwing the ball behind my head as a kid until I decided to form a proper shooting form and went to my local park every day and practiced proper free throws until I became a pretty damn good shooter now and I’m not getting paid millions of dollar to do so but did it just so I played the game of basketball the proper way which baffles me that a number one pick point guard in Ben Simmons refuses to put in the time to do the same. Shooting is all mentality and Ben Simmons exposed himself so badly this playoff that until he gets a shot I doubt he’ll ever be viewed as an all star player cuz opponents are going to use that against him so much and we saw that with the hack a Ben Simmons this year

When I look at the difference between Mitchell and Simmons since their ROTY race, I think a big difference was Donovan being unafraid to be vulnerable. He constantly changes his form, his playstyle and his routines such as before free throws in order to find what works whereas it seems Ben tries one or two things at the start of the year then regresses back to same old Ben. I routed against Ben a lot in the early years, being a Jazz fan. But since his recent fiascos and complete battle with is own city, I've started hoping that he can find some solid ground again. It looks really difficult to be him right now and I think he deserves a fresh start and a chance to quietly build back up without all the bright lights on him.

Phenomenal video, Simmons in the 3 seems like an obvious choice to me as his shooting is just no where near an NBA pg. That might give Philly a poorly formed team but I don't think Simmons is entirely to blame. Putting him on a team with a strong outside. But no doubt he is afraid of making improvements to his offense game
@tropickman3 жыл бұрын
Precisely. The onslaught against him appears to be an attempt to white wash the failure of Sixers as a team & organization & to protect Rivers, Embiid & others. Embiid being always injured seems to be more of a factor in playoffs.
@DC180PP3 жыл бұрын
No Simmons need to be a 4. Small forward have to be able to shoot from all three levels, Ben can guard 1-4 on defense

Shout out to Markelle Fultz for the following year going #1 despite being on a team that finished bottom of their conference and didn’t even win 5 games. I don’t know why during that period everyone just ignored winning and fell in love with pure stats.

At the same time Mitchell's impact on his team is much higher. Especially in recent playoffs where him going nuclear and scoring toe to toe with another playoff scoring volcano in Jamal Murray is what kept his team in.

As a Sixers fan, I blame management and Brown/Rivers for aiding and albeiting Simmons. Rivers scoffed at reporters all year when asked about why Simmons wouldn’t shoot more. Brown called out Simmons once and said he wanted him to shoot one 3 pointer every game. Simmons did not attempt a 3 pointer the rest of the season after that statement. Nobody held Simmons accountable, why would he ever change?

As a Cavs fan, it's crazy he hasn't improved at all. Just like Shaq - relying on their unbelievably high talent level. We just drafted a 7 foot center that can already shoot significantly better than him Work ethic is one of the most important traits in the NBA. Kobe wouldn't be Kobe without that one trait

Yeah, it makes me want to rip my hair out when I get a standout athlete being called “The Next LeBron, Kobe, Kyrie, KD, etc.” Like they need to not only prove they’re the real deal but also let them create their own identity and to not make such bogus comparisons extremely early on into their career.
