The Mikal Bridges trade really stands out as Philly’s worst move of the past decade. He won 2 NCAA titles in 3 years. He was older, more mature. He would have been an instant fit, but the NBA’s fascination with youth won out. Honorable mention goes to passing on Jayson Tatum. Say what you will about Charles Barkley, but Charles knows basketball talent, and he made it clear Tatum was the best player in the upcoming draft, months before Philly took Markelle Fultz.

Maaaan could you imagine if the 76ers had drafted Mikal Bridges (did not trade him to the Suns) or Jayson Tatum initially and then later kept Jimmy Butler like Embiid wanted, they could’ve had “Embiid, Butler, and Bridges” or “Embiid, Butler, and Tatum” as their potential big 3

The crazy thing is Philly’s process wasn’t the problem. They just so horribly mismanaged their assets, failed to develop the young talent they acquired, and they failed to build an actual culture that could lead to winning. It is truly incredible how much Philly has squandered the opportunities presented to them through the last decade.

For all the focus on players and picks, imo the biggest failure was failing to find a coach who could build culture. The most generous take you could have about Doc has to admit he works best with established stars who set the teams tone, like KG and CP3. It felt like the last 2 - 3 years the sixers have been trying to find the right mix of players who win despite Docs adjustment-less, alienating style of coaching rather than finding a better coach.

IMO the most important reason why The Sixers started failing, is the losing culture. The mentality part of basketball is very important. When you don't want a player like Jimmy who is tough mentally and wants to win, when you make it ok for the team to lose games for the good picks, the mentality of losing being ok and not caring about winning becomes a habit. And that habit will never let you win a championship.

The pain of being a Philly fan has to be one of the worst experiences in modern NBA. There’s been so many missed drafts, terrible trades, management blunders, debilitating contracts, and the most consistent early playoff exit mentality only really comparable to the Chicago bulls. If they kept Jimmy, drafted at least one other decent draft with their multitude of opportunities, and had consistent management they could’ve been a dynasty. Now we’re looking at embiid entering his 30s with no post season success and minimal assets left from their win now trades.

How to destroy a franchise? 1. Hire Elton Brand. 2. Trade for an injured injury prone 7 footer. 3. Draft 4 7 footers in a row in the lottery. Who are also injury prone btw and let a rookie PG cook as much as he want for a season so he can upgrade his trade value. 4. Trade for the first overall pick without including one your 4 7 footers. 5. Draft your Future PG and hide the fact that he had a motorcycle accident that cost him his shooting talents. Who is also prone to injury. 6. Trade for a superstar and a supermid wing. 7. Let one of your 7 footers that can't shoot play point guard. 8. Hire Doc Rivers 9. Give up on the first that you traded for. 10. Sign the the supermid player instead of the superstar. 11. Hire Daryl Morey. 12. After some early playoff exits, trade your starting PG for a strip club patriot because it's probably his fault that your superstar center can't get it done in the playoffs and your coach have terrible rotations and adjustments. Right right right? 13. Hire a nurse after firing you doctor and make false promises to the strip club patriot after taking a pay cut. And sign a defensive master who can also shoot corner threes and sometimes do nothing but cardio. 14. Now that the strip club patriot discovered that Daryl Morey lied to him try to trade him and ask too much in exchange. 15. Your injury prone superstar center who could not get in done in the playoffs and also a fake MVP is now all alone and probably wanting out and already requested a trade in secret so bet your future on Tyrese Maxey.

The real "Trust the process" were the Denver Nuggets. Trusted their draft picks, trusted their coach, trusted their executives and team staff. Let them bake in the NBA till their reached their peak. Bet on them even beyond their injury years and make big moves like trading for AG, signing Bruce Brown, Trading for KCP and good role players to go for the title instead of throwing their picks around for superstars that were bad fit around their core

19:16 onward is the best summary of why this team is absolute shit. The Sixers are dead to the city and that says something when the Flyers have stunk for the past decade. But do you wanna know the difference between these two franchises, in just this past off season alone? The Flyers cleaned out the front office and management and brought in hockey (Keith Jones, Danny Briere, John LeClair, and Patrick Sharp) and Philly people (Dan Hilferty.) The Flyers drafted a generational superstar in Michkov and have freed up some awful contracts from the previous regime. They FINALLY have people who care and understand the modern game. Meanwhile the Sixers have an owner who’s too busy getting drunk at Washington preseason games and trying to pilfer the city for a stadium that’s just going to displace Chinatown residents and cause even worse traffic problems. They have a snake oil salesmen GM who’s so deluded beyond reality that he thinks he’ll get multiple first round picks for guys like Tobias Harris and let’s not even begin with the James Harden situation. And they have an “MVP” who takes no accountability and throws his teammates under the bus. The only hope we have left is Tyrese Maxey and if he gets traded, this organization is really done for. The animosity is quite high in the Cradle of Liberty.

Yeah, I don't know if it was so much Philly drafting "busts" as Philly failing to properly nurture and develop their young talent. I think the one thing we've seen consistently in recent history is that the most successful franchises patiently develop their young players. Bucks, Celtics, Warriors, Nuggets -- all teams that committed to their youth and spent years getting it right instead of swapping stars in and out hoping one of them gets them over the hump.

18:40 “But they have never gone so far as to check out and give up on their team in the most important game of the season” Lebron. 2011 NBA finals. Game 4. 8 points & 0-6 against Jason Kidd/Jason Terry. He also fell apart in the 4th quarter of multiple games that series as it went on. He mentally checked out. But don’t take my word for it. Here’s Lebron’s: “My first year in Miami, I was down there, I wanted to prove everybody wrong. And I literally lost myself in the moment. I got all the way to the championship that year and lost. Afterward, I was like, we lost because I wasn’t even there.”

Criticizing the 76ers for "not even making it past the second round" in 2019 is a bit harsh given that they took the eventual champions to a game 7 that was decided by a buzzer beater. That was easily the closest they came to a championship during this entire period

Very few have a true idea of the amount of picks, young guys, rotation players on incredible contracts, (often young guys as well) etc. that PHI accumulated in the Hinkie era. Also left them with an extremely clean cap sheet. You can go through transactions on bballref and you can see most of the moves. He left (got pushed out) RIGHT before the end of the 15-16 season, like days before iirc. It’s kinda staggering the amount of assets they squandered. I believe if Hinkie was given even just another 2 years things would’ve been infinitely different. I’m not a PHI fan, but it’s just very interesting. It’s kinda unreal, if they even battled like .200 they would be in an amazing spot. They batted like .025 though. Jimmy Butler even told them about Simmons. They had that one last out, they could’ve signed Jimmy, traded Ben, (who would’ve had big time trade value at the time, the trade package they would’ve received is massive) let Tobias walk, and went on building with a pile of cap space, assets from the Ben trade, their own picks, Joel/Jimmy etc. They did the polar opposite of that.
