Hey man. I just discovered your content and it is awesome. I see your channel didn’t take off (yet;) which is so unfortunate. I think it is because you see (and hear) the world objectively and speak your unbiased truth which most people don’t really want to hear. Most want to feel what they feel and believe what they believe and feel good about feeling what they feel and don’t have the ability or desire to deconstruct and parse those impressions and impose an impartial rational approach. Your content is really valuable and THANK YOU for your efforts. I hope you are doing well. All best...

good sound advices I'm amazed with all the gearheads on utube that you don't have views.you never hear the big pickup companies give out this info.so they can sell you their next big thing instead of what you need.

Very interesting vid, Thanks for sharing.I have an old encore strat that I bought off ebay for £5 with a view to robbing it for parts for my own quirky home builds. However... when I plugged it in top play it, as you just have to out of curiosity :O) I was pleasantly surprised at how good it sounded and felt to play. So instead of butchering it, I've stripped the hideous pink paint off to bare wood and done some mods on it. and I love playing it !! It has a nice vintage jangly-ness to it, which in part I guess is down to the old pickups?Anyway... thanks again for your vid.

I caught the part about how higher resistance “can” cause a loss of highs. But the way people talk about the resistance of any given pickup makes me wonder: is resistance just a byproduct of the winding that you have to deal with, and work around? Or, is it a property that you consider and make use of to help choose the application. If you answered that, I apparently missed it. I feel like people place WAY too much importance on the dc ohm rating of a given pickup. Like “my pups have more resistance than yours do, therefore, your pups are wussy. Lol

The B in ABS is basically buterate. A for acrylic, s for styrene. ;) plastic is pretty darn quite if you have magnetic or field coil ears lol

As pickups degrade over time, how can you tell the way a particular pickup's sound was when it was new in the late 60's?

I guess if you build one new with the same specs it will sound very similar

Non conductive materials are what is needed around magnets and coils. Don't worry about the type of plastic used.

Hello Dylan, I have a theory refered to the more airy tone of vintage guitars (beside imaginarry mojo and what happens to the wood and that all screwed in parts settle and loose tensions): I can imagine that the coating shrinks and results in a microscopic gap between the windings and maybe even to the wax (if potted). Same would apply on cryo-tuning, I think... 😏 Funny thing: as a bit crazy guy I put my Fender Noiseless N3 pups in the freezer for a month, vacuum-sealed, before mounting😂 Effect: zero😁 What are your thoughts to this theory? And what do you think about cryo-tuning? Hope you see this, because the upload is pretty old...😃

Pickup tone is a very subjective matter. IMHO, CustomBuckers used in reissues are the closest you can get to an original PAF (although there are many variables I agree...) I would say these are the finest pickups Gibson has ever produced... Also, one pickup that has impressed me is the Seymour Duncan SH-2 B. Basically, it is the Jazz pickup, but just a little hotter & brighter, to be used in the bridge position. Pairs up perfect with the Jazz in the neck, much better in my opinion than the famous Hot Rodded set SH-4/SH-2. I discovered it by chance on an HH Thinline Tele I have acquired used, and it ROCKS ! From LP-type squeals to Fenderish cleans with lots of clarity, harmonics and sustain. I am so happy with it, taht I am mounting another one in an HSS Strat with a series/parallel switching option, instead of a Suhr SSH+, much too high-output to my taste ! Rock on \m/

What’s the difference between pups and pafs?

Pickups are all pickups. PAFS are a humbucker that was made for a few years and labeled as Patent Applied For
