I turn 64 tomorrow. I’ve been playing since I was 16. I have over 50 guitars ranging $100 - $2000. What I play the most are the ones I have built from parts. $300 - $500 into them. Why? Because of all the work I put into them they are exactly what I want. I have dressed the frets, rolled the board and everything from the fingerboard material / scale / radius and the weight and shape of the body are exactly what I want. Electronics are exactly what I want. I’ve come to a point where cost or brand name mean nothing. A lot of old people don’t give a shit what other people think. It is liberating.

I built a guitar from a kit, and I love it. I got locking tuners, a gold plated trem bridge, and I hand engraved the body. It's cheap, it's fun, and I made what I wanted. It's not perfect, but I'm playing the frets right off of it, and loving every minute.

@jimrichards9072 I'm over halfway through my life, but I appreciate your sentiment. I'm your typical broke millennial/Gen X, so I've never been able to save up for guns and guitars, but I did have an unexpected bit of capital once and decided to build a guitar and see if I could pull it off. Like I said before, I'm happy with the results.

"No pro would use a Hello Kitty guitar!" A friend of mine took his son to see Sabaton the other day in Denver ... Joakim Brodén played a Hello Kitty Squire.

Pros are using vintage guitars that are much worst than the Hello Kitty guitar...just saying

Just enjoy the guitar journey. I own part casters, high end ,low end. It doesn't matter. I personally love looking ,searching and dreaming. Of course playing with enjoyment is key

I buy stuff that I like. What other people think of the stuff I buy doesn’t matter even a little bit. Never live your life trying to gain the approval of people that don’t actually give a shit about you. Life is way more enjoyable this way.

I agree buy the best you can get. That doesn’t necessarily mean buy the most expensive, but the best. And the best for what you do, and want to do. I learned early to ignore the naysayers, there are those that no matter what you own, they’ll find something to criticize. Ignore them

Dylan, you make some of the most sense and I love it. I love my SE Custom 24, and I love my core McCarty 594. I love my Warmoth parts Strat, and I love my American made Silver Sky. I prefer the Tonemaster Fenders over the tube ones. Happy Thanksgiving brother!

Amen Brother! The sooner you/me/we stop worrying about what we think deserve or what we think others think we deserve (whether it’s expensive or inexpensive), the better off you will be. Like you said, buy and play what you like, and don’t worry about anything else other than the enjoyment.

Hey Dylan I appreciate you giving a clear no to homophobic and sexist comments. It can be very easy for people to just let it slide but it isn't nice to see random hateful comments so I appreciate it!

My only thing about "beginner" guitars is that they cost a lot less, so given a certain budget you can try multiple styles and find what works for you. In my case, when I started out 20 years ago - I bought a Mexican Strat - loved it but wrecked it hanging it on the wall over a baseboard heater. Bought an Epi les paul, - hated it. had a gretsch - that was OK... had an ibanez - nah... had a LP Jr - kinda cool but the strat was better. Got an Epiphone Casino - LOVED it. - still have it and probably will keep till I die. Bought another American Strat - liked it a lot but wound up selling cuz we needed $$. eventually got a Squier Strat last year, swapped out pickups and tuners and it's great now. I'd like an American Vintage Strat, but no budget for it, so the Squier will do until that happens

I'm glad someone said this. My first guitar was a LTD EC-1000. I can never make the excuse that it isn't me. Then I bought a $120 tele kit. Guess what...it's still me! Hahaha

So jealous of young players today when I started playing 50 years ago beginner guitars were both comparatively more expensive and terrible quality.

Bought DGT SE as a total beginner, it might be overkill, but I loved how the gold top looks, I do not care that I do not know how to make it sing, I will in time, I guess. Love the quality thing about PRS (brought it to guitar tech, and he had nothing to do, the setup was perfect), and their story, and I enjoy the process of learning. That quality thing, the total lack of issues is why I think it is smart to pay a little bit more, for a stress-free experience. (in Europe PRS SE are 20-30% more expensive than in the USA).
