This is a Tool Assisted Speedrun. Visit tasvideos.org/ for more information.
"Beat The Champion" (Otherwise known as "From Zero to Champion") is a speedrunning category in Wii Sports that gives the simple goal of, well, beating the champion in a specific sport starting from the beginning of the game. In the case of Wii Boxing, you are tasked with defeating a series of opponents before you face off against Champion Matt. RTA Timing starts on the first frame the lightning disappears after A is pressed to fight Ryan, and ends on the first frame the KO text fades in after beating Matt.
While using the Wii Remote and Nunchuck to fight your opponents, you can use several different types of punches (Straight jabs, hooks, and uppercuts) to attack. Hitting a fighter's head area does more damage than hitting their body, but attacks can be completely blocked if they connect with a fighter's gloves in a guarding position.
This TAS is a 5034 frame (1 minute, 23.9 second) improvement to the first one I made over five and a half years ago through a combination of using a different version of the game and actual optimizations in the fights themselves. The complete timesave breakdown follows as:
- 1914 frames (31.9 seconds) saved by using version 1.00 of the game instead of 1.1, this completely skips the replay section that follows after the bell rings when you win the fight. In total, 87 frames for each replay, multiplied by the 22 fights that happen before you fight Matt, after which it doesn't matter because timing is finished.
- 1128 frames (18.8 seconds) saved by not having to deal with Anna getting up seven seconds into the countdown like the first TAS, which I mentioned to be the primary improvement for another attempt.
- 1992 frames (33.2 seconds) saved through general optimization, mostly due to utilizing straight jabs to the face instead of almost entirely relying on hooks, which can be slow and inconsistent in dealing damage at times. Specific to the end fights, I also utilized counter-hits to deal even more damage in a single blow, at the expense of the game slowing down for roughly half a second, but my testing suggested that it was worth it in rare circumstances.
Unfortunately, despite these improvements, I'm still left with frustrations involving exactly how damage is dealt and how hits connect, both being potential improvements for a third revision. Sometimes, straight jabs in a combo deal two chunks of HP, while other times they deal one, even if both are face shots, the same numbered hit in a combo, have the same general speed, etc. Likewise, face-hooks deal varying damage (2, 2.5, 3 chunks for a strong hit, 1-2 for weak ones) for reasons I can't understand, though I at least tried to optimize them this time in comparison to the last TAS.
Similarly, it appears that after hitting the opponent's head enough, its hitbox seemingly disappears for an unspecified amount of time before you can hit it again, which was a complete and utter pain to work through while making this TAS. Additionally, there's also the factor of the opponent simply moving around to avoid attacks, which is another layer on top of trying to hit at the right time.

It was an ordinary day in the land of the Miis. An unassuming Guest B decided, after his usual morning routine, to try something different. He noticed a poster advertising for the local Boxing club, which shouted "Newcomers Welcome!" in bold text, and after realizing he had nothing else on his schedule, he decided to give it a try. After filling out the necessities, he was due to spar against Ryan, a fellow newcomer who he'd spoken to a number of times before - a friendship, almost blooming. It was supposed to be a one-and-done day, lax, without expectations. Supposed to be. Right before their match started, Guest B immediately noticed something was out of place. His arms and body started to move without his mind telling them to - someone, some _thing_ was commanding them in his place. Guest B was frightened, and any attempts to vocalize his thoughts were silenced before they could even form. He realized he could do nothing but watch from inside his own mind at the events that were to transpire. One question lingered in Guest B’s thoughts - “What was its goal?” Whatever it was, it quickly became evident that this entity wasn’t just moving along for the sake of it. It had a purpose. The entity was a master of boxing, its ins and outs realized to the point where an entire fight was reduced to a simple flowchart. It knew when to throw out punches, how to excruciatingly target vital after vital, and how to make sure its opponent was never going to get up again until after the bell rang. What was supposed to be a friendly sparring match effectively turned into an execution. “Fight!” the announcer shouted. Eight seconds and eight punches later, Ryan fell to the ground, after a sharp left hook right to the frontal lobe. The crowd screamed at this turn of events that arrived from nothing, all under the impression that Guest B was a pure novice - as green as the grass that surrounded the stadium outside. Yet, it had happened right before their eyes - Ryan was down, and didn’t even have the chance to throw a punch. The organizers scrambled through all of their records, and they all indicated that Guest B was telling the truth - he hadn’t participated in anything relating to boxing prior to this day. Maybe he trained privately? Maybe he dueled in some faraway place? Whatever the answer was, Guest B only replied in nods and shakes - a definite answer wasn’t arriving any time soon, thanks to the entity preventing Guest B from speaking. Multiple affiliates started swarming Guest B after the match was concluded, all shouting about how he should join the professional league immediately. “You might be able to take on Matt!” one of them said. Guest B had heard of Matt before, the reigning champion of boxing even well outside of his prime years several decades before. “So, that’s this thing’s goal.” Guest B mused to himself. “Beating the champion.” And so, the fights continued, one after the other, with the same overwhelming menace that had occurred against Ryan. Despite the opponents having more experience, better technique, refined prowess, all fell down in seconds. It didn’t matter. Nothing did, except getting to Matt. After twenty two fights, a string of uncontested wins, and a flawless track record, Guest B found himself face to face with the man himself. And just as suddenly as the entity arrived, it relinquished its control over Guest B right before the grand finale. “It wants me to do this for myself,” Guest B understood, “No puppet strings attached”. Watching from the inside, he had learned the art of sheer force from all the fights that he had witnessed. With an eerie calmness, Guest B walked up to Matt. The bell rings. Immediately, Guest B launches a right jab to the neck and a left jab to the head. Matt, almost entirely unphased, attempts to retaliate in kind. “You’re fast.” Guest B thought, launching a powerful right hook, “But I’m still faster.” The hook connects, while Matt’s comes up short - nearly half of his health bar is depleted at once. Guest B follows with a left jab to the face, and both reset to a neutral stance. “This is the end.” Both launch left hooks aimed for their heads. Like before, Guest B’s hit connects, while Matt’s just barely fails. Matt falls to the ground. It’s over. Guest B had won.

Guest B's constant seizures could lead to something here. my guess is that he has this unquenchable thirst to lay people out. every second he's not throwing a punch, he feels undeniable pain. B needs this. this is his life. this is the only way he can feel relief.

In the old TAS, Anna became the champion because she was only Mii that came back up. In this TAS, Matt is back to being the champion.
