Nice job. Your video was invaluable. I have not put the guy wires on yet, but this is what I discovered: I have a friend with 1:1 non-cowled civ paint job PT-17. What I discovered, and it's not clear in pictures on box - the guy wires on the upper wing inside - both the front and rear wire go only to FRONT lower, outer strut - meaning both top wires connect to the same front strut point on the lower wing. Same L/R. Not sure if is that is why there was a little slack. I'll report back when I install. When I looked at 1:1, it was obvious there were many more cables, and some were doubled. Not a scale critic, just found it helpful and fortunate to have a 1:1 to look at!

Brian, I know this kind of late, but it may help you later on. On your PT-17 the tail supports they are adjustable. You cut one of the hooks off then bend the next ring up to make a hook, do this on both sides of the tail, repeat if needed. Keep up the good work the two of you do.

When I assembled the Dynam WACO, I used a tiny box end metric wrench with a small piece of adhesive tape on the end to hold the tiny nuts while I started the tiny screws and tightened them. Helped preserve my sanity while installing wing struts. Center struts are "cabanes". Canopy glue works better gluing windshields to battery hatch section, etc., goes on milky dries clear. Tiny pins needed while canopy glue dries.

The provided glue seems to be a type of contact cement, that needs to set up before parts are joined. If no air can get to it when wet, it may take a long time to dry and stick permanently. Love your real-time assembly videos complete with head scratching and re-dos. Dynam kits could do with more helpful details on which screws go where, etc. PT-17 kit looks quite well designed.

I bought my WACO in 2016, it's a lot of fun. Haven't flown it in like two years. It did take some work to get it together. It was funny when the ESC was beeping at you, I knew what the issues was. But you found it quickly. Some planes need the throttle trim lowered all the way down to start the motor.

These struts remind me of my WACO from about 7 yrs ago. A real pain in the A____ with all the screws and nuts. I had the same problem with my canopies, not glued on very well. You think this problem would have be resolved 7 years ago, but it is Dynam. And yes I watched the whole DAMM video.

The "step" is hand-hold. I added spark plug and wiring detail. There are little ears with holes on sides of dummy engine cylinders, route "wires" through them. Paint crankcase gray and exhaust headers silver. Paint firewall silver. My "rigging wires" will be 0.5mm metallic elastic cord from craft store. Large black decal things go on rear of bottom wings next to fuselage for walk areas.

Some folks work Blenderm tape into the foam control surface "hinge" areas to keep them from separating. I have cut foam control surface parts free and installed pinned nylon Dubro hinges glued in with canopy glue. You can drill a hole through foam and hinge and glue in a toothpick to secure hinge permanently and cut off the excess toothpick, stubs are a little ugly.

The black bar decal is the "non-slip" area where you walk on the wing to access the cockpit. Nice work by you and the "Camera Crew"... Convinced me to buy one to replace my E-flite PT-17 1.1m (that suffered severe deceleration trauma). I'm going to use the receiver from the E-flite for the Dynam. I hope it works without re-programming.
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 жыл бұрын
Make sure you check DIRECTION of the control surface movements. If you have to flip them, you're AS3X will correct in the wrong direction on that axis, so you CAN use one of these... amzn.to/3pMrN7k ...and they'll make it work just fine. OR you can also flip the Rx to be in the right spacial position, but that's sometimes easier said than done ;) Good luck! I heard the Eflite was kinda sucked??? This one will be better flying with AS3X and you'll have the better CG...just don't hate me when you're about 2.5 hours into the "1 hour" build - LOL ;)
@kr6dr
@kr6dr 3 жыл бұрын
@@BrianPhillipsRC Thank you for the receiver tip. It was exactly as you said. I will try the servo reverser from Amazon. I’m also going to fabricate a new landing gear to put the wheels further ahead of the CG and larger “bush” tires, because I mostly fly from unimproved desert surfaces. The E-flute PT-17 was a great plane, once I corrected the CG by using a 3700mAh battery moved all the way forward, overhanging the battery tray.
@kr6dr
@kr6dr 3 жыл бұрын
The servo reversers are not smoothly linear, they make the flight controls too "jerky". So I used the Spektrum programming cable to unlock the receiver and set it up properly. The plane flies great, not as "spunky" as the lighter E-flite PT-17 but looks better.

Just a minor note to future PT-17 owners/builders: When attaching the flying wires, while working from the front of the plane, it is easier to start with the back wires then attach the front wires. Also, attach the landing gear fairings to the gear wires and not the fuselage. If you allow a small gap between the fuse and the fairings they will last longer, assuming you have less than perfect landings, since they will flex with the gear.

This plane is really fun...not perfect, and not the "best" plane every, but it's a GREAT plane for what it is. The WORST part is putting it together, but it's a great flying and reasonably inexpensive, all while being BEAUTIFUL as all get out! Flat Yellow paint is gorgeous!!! I love a yellow plane!

@@BrianPhillipsRC Glad to hear it! To be fair I had it on while I worked but pretty much heard every word. I have a number of Dynam birds still and they aren't terrible but they all have so much potential to be awesome but just miss out because of faulty components or poor design, like the ME109 which could be one of my favourites but the retracts are pathetic - for no discernible electronic or mechanical reason they work intermittently like as if posessed. It's a small thing but it ruins the flight and really brings it down from a potential 9 to a 5 or 6 out of 10. I believe they have really stepped up their game somewhat but then I saw the C-47 on the shelves marketed and printed as "SkySTRAIN" and that says it all about them.

Hey Brian like your review, this is a nice plane. Have you ever had any mishaps while filming a review and if so have you published them?
@BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 жыл бұрын
Mishap? You mean, like having a plane suck really bad? Or do you mean, like crashing into the house or something of the sort? You'll have to get a bit more specific, since I'm not sure how to answer. I'll try this... YES, we have crashed planes, and waited for a replacement on a few occasions. Sometimes we share this footage out of order, and other times, we just don't use the footage, since it's lame. It happens once in a while, and especially on "early" releases, the companies we work with would rather not have a complete loss on the video, so they send another. Here's a few examples... I flew straight into a phone pole at full speed - LOL - another was a failed dive into the ground - another was where I had a battery come out (I didn't strap it - Great Decision making, right?) and go forward while the plane went down. Another, I clipped a tree on final and crashed...all of these were my mistakes, not plane issues. If the plane has issues, we talk about it, but sometimes I'm pretty embarrassed too. Most of the rational for if we share the failed attempts has to do with if I want a replacement plane form the MFG, and if the plane caused the issue, or if I caused the issue. I crash many times OFF CAMERA too, but what you're seeing is usually me flying for the first, second, third flights. We've also made the decision to share many crashes too...just depends on how the crash happened. If we think we can share some way to help others avoid doing the same thing, or how to fix it. Think F-16 80mm....we broke that thing several times, and I fixed it on our videos. We felt like there was value to sharing that part of our experience. If it's pretty much take it or leave it, we might ask the MFG for their opinion....but usually I'm just trying to get a replacement sent. After all, and it sounds petty, but you might get it... a part of our payment for doing these videos, is the plane itself...so even if I don't need another plane, I want them and would like to have it for fun use when were done filming our review, and also nice to have it for "second thought" footage, etc. Anyway, I could elaborate more, but I trust you got your answer. P.S. I know some of our piers use "unedited" footage as their hallmark, and while we pretty much do this too, we don't want to be so pragmatic that we share every terrible experience that I really caused. We just don't want to share crappy footage. We try hard, even though it might not always be evident, and we know we already push the envelope for how long a long video can be here on KZbin. Hope this helps.

Any chance that one of the other Dynam planes you've got waiting in the wings (pun intended) is their Albatros DVa biplane? I've got one coming today. Clearly, they suggest mounting the struts/cables on the upper wing first, as it would be much easier to do on the wing laying upside down on the counter rather than manipulating the screws and screwdriver while craning up from underneath with the wing positioned on the plane. Oh and, BTW, I'd sure recommend putting the plug in your sink, lest you inadvertently drop some small irreplaceable piece/screw down the drain. [Edit: after actually *watching* further through your video I see that you've already made this observation - sorry.] Finally, the *black stripe* decals are for the walk areas on the lower wing, snug up next to the fuselage (where the occupants would walk on the wing to climb into the cockpit). As always, thanks for sharing. Steve

Thanks Stuff ;) Appreciate your "updates" !!! Plugging the sink, especially with this plane, would be a good idea, BUT ironically, we've never lost a PLANE part into the drain ;) Now I will consider myself officially jinxed - LOL!!! Looks great and seems to fly quite well too. What's not to like...the instructions. Which makes me wonder, is the translation as bad in other languages as they are in English and also since English is such a world wide language why can't they get someone who can actually do a good translation? All that and the fact that the instructions were no where near complete. I still want a good Bi-plane but something easier and less costly someday. With Dynam, I'd want to put a DSMX receiver in it so I could use my DX8 and have a throttle cut off. Again thanks for the great (and very time consuming) review. And yes, I know you spent more time on it than the 3:44:07. Such commitment, five stars for you and your wonderful camera crew. Oh, Happy Thanksgiving. @BrianPhillipsRC
@BrianPhillipsRC 3 жыл бұрын
Interesting.. I fly straight and level. Throttle percentage is not critical, so long as you have enough power to keep going straight, but I can see a trim issue at any time. It's just hard to adjust it when you're in a maneuver, in my experience.
