We go to the Guadalupe Mountains every fall for the amazing color. It’s really beautiful. We don’t stay in the park, though. We stay at nearby Brantley Lake State Park, where they have excellent RV pads with plenty of room, full hookups, nice bath house, and a playground for the kids. The hiking in Guadalupe is really great once you get past the dry lower easy trails, which are pretty flat and kind of boring. Our goal is to make it all the way to Guadalupe peak next year. The farthest we’ve gone is Devil’s Hall with the kiddos and they love it. Lots of boulders to jump on and climb, and really pretty.

I guess I should specify our hiking with the beautiful fall colors is in McKittrick Canyon. Also a tip - there are a lot of loose pebbles and it’s very easy to twist an ankle so wear good hiking boots

We were at Carlsbad caverns two months ago. Quite spectacular. Took the elevator both ways. My best recommendation... a headlamp and hand held flashlight - the new LED types work well. We drove over from the campground to the park in our car.

Agree 100% that Carlsbad National Park is a destination type of national park. As you described it, the Carlsbad Caverns are simply stunning. I'm sure the original entrance is great, but my, at the time, 67 year old out of shape bones wanted no part of that entrance, so we used the elevator both ways. Interesting about the lighting. The NP has changed it all out since we were there early in 2014. When we were there, the lighting was a mix of mercury vapor, incandescent, and florescent. We came up to Carlsbad via US-285 from Ft Stockton, TX on I-10. We also still had our 24 ft travel trailer in tow when we climbed up to Carlsbad Caverns. Even with the trailer, it was a great drive to the entrance. We are still enjoying all your travel/info You Tube videos.

As noted by other viewers, Mckitrick Canyon is beautiful and magical during fall colors. I doubt there is anywhere else in the U.S. where you can see such a variety of fall colors because the Guadeloupe mountains are the southern tip of the Rockies and are a confluence of difference ecosystems. Here you can see the Texas Madrone tree, that is common to Big Bend, along side of Maples and Oak trees. The trail is friendly to mobility impaired persons. It is not steep. I have seen elderly hikers with a walker. They might have gone only a few hundred yards but, they were able to enjoy the outdoors and the brilliant fall colors. We ran into a professional photographer who was following fall colors across the U.S. He started in the northeast and finished in the Guadeloupe mountains.

Yet another terrific video guys! My youngest son and I visited and hiked to the bottom of Carlsbad Caverns probably 15 years ago. By the time we reached the bottom I told my son that we were going to have to take the elevator back up. I thought I was in pretty good shape but there was no way I could have hiked back to the top. Afterwards, the calves of my legs ached for about two weeks.......ok, maybe not that long, but they were pretty sore for a few days. So if you are not in good shape you might want to take the elevator down.

Welcome to Texas! The first time I went through Carlsbad Caverns was in 1954! The rangers would take medium sized groups down and of course narrate all the sights. And yes they really DID turn all the lights off for a few seconds and and let us experience total complete darkness and as a 6 year old boy I was totally impressed! Back then there was NO elevator and after walking all the way down you had to walk back out. It made for a very long day! I've been back several times since and of course took my children and they were impressed but not as much as THIS little kid was! LOL

Live in Hoston, TX. Planning on retiring in about 18 months. Did our first rental trailer weekend last weekend to Brazos Bend State Park, TX. Had a great time, about 12 of our friends joined us. Looking forward to several more rentals before we decide what we want to buy trailer wise. Surprised to see a video from you on Guadalupe Mountain and Carlsbad. Did a backpacking trip with my 15 year old son to Guadalupe Mtn in 2004 and took both boys to Carlsbad and the Grand Canyon for spring break about the same time. Looking forward to more stuff from you guys.

I wish you would have mentioned McKittrick Canyon in Guadalupe NP. Truly a unique gem in Texas full of bigtooth maple trees likely in full fall color now and it is an easy trail . Yes , Carlsbad Caverns is awesome . So is Big Bend NP . Thanks for sharing your West Texas experience.

I hate to tell you Shawn, but Deaf Leppard wasn't the composer or first singers to sing the hymn. I know that crushes you, but "someone" has to bring you down to earth. LOL! This was a great video. We went to Carlsbad on our honey moon 60 years ago. It was amazing. Yes, they did turn off the lights and it was the blackest black I've ever experienced. It was inspiring when everyone in the group started singing Rock of Ages. It was one of those moments that sends chills up your spine. If you're going to hike down the natural entrance...which I recommend if you're at all fit enough to do so...make certain your shoes fit well enough that your feet aren't sliding forward in your shoes and your toes bumping up against the front of your shoes. If your feet do slide forward on the hike down, at the least you'll be in pain on the hike and end up with bruised toes, at the worst you can lose a toenail or two due to badly damaging the nail bed. Take it seriously and wear good hiking boots or athletic shoes that keep your feet where they should be. The downhill grade is extreme. You won't need a jacket, the hike makes you hot and the cavern is a nice steady temperature throughout.

Two excellent hikes are "The Bowl" that was listed on the sign you showed and McKittrick Canyon. The hike to "The Bowl" takes you up in elevation and at the top you are in an alpine meadow but a much higher elevation. You will think, where did this come from. It is a remnant of the Rocky Mountains. The other hike is McKittrick Canyon best done in the fall for the fall colors. This hike is a hike in and hike out without a lot of elevation change. If you hike far enough you come to Pratt's Cabin. I have been to Carlsbad Caverns when I was a kid it was "wet" then with water dripping everywhere and water pools. There has not been enough rain in the last decades so it is dry now.

Great tips; I really really enjoy all your videos; two thumbs up. My wife and I are reading Nevada Barr's mystery series. The stories integrate Ms. Barr's diverse work experiences and locations as a National Park Service Ranger. Her first book, "Track of the Cat," takes place in the Guadalupe Mountains National Park. We thought it might be fun to visit Guadalupe Mountains NP, and your video certainly heightens that interest. Given Sean's note that there are no roads through Guadalupe NP, would you recommend this as a stop for folks that don't really hike much beyond the easily accessible trail-heads? Additionally, we have our own "Baby Girl," Rosie, who travels everywhere with us. Thanks for your thoughts!

I live in Ruidoso, NM, and while the beauty of the alpine range here is beautiful and home, Carlsbad Caverns is a place I never get tired of visiting. If you are ever back in the area in fall, McKittrick Canyon, between the two parks you mention, is a stunning hike among a hidden riparian path up to McKittrick ridge. Last weeks of October or the first week of November is a great time to see the leaves change as there are plenty of oak and maple along the path.

McKittrick Canyon would have been a nice hike this time of year (fall). Back in the late 90's I would sometimes work a vacation around Carlsbad doing volunteer work with a group in the cave. They would let me camp not far from the natural entrance up near one of the old ranger cabins. We had tons of fun there and one morning a couple of us decided to check out the morning bat flight. It sounded like dripping plastic burning as they dive bombed into the cave. I've even been in the cave during the flight not far from the entrance. That was a bizarre once in a lifetime experience. Kings Palace used to be on the self guided tour but theft of formations became a serious problem many years ago. Hall of the White Giant is a little more "caving" like tour. Not for the claustrophobic and there is a constriction some people may not fit through. Our group did a lot of re-survey and restoration in Lower Cave if you take that tour. When it rains in the warmer months it's not unusual to see Tarantulas coming out and on the road.

Great video. You should go to Cathedral Caverns in Grant, Alabama. It is beautiful. Somewhat like this cave, tho not as big.

The parking lot at Guadalupe is sloped so be sure to lock those rear trailer tires if disconnecting the TV! Also, you can visit Roswell, NM since it is only 96 miles north of Carlsbad (be sure to stop at the McDonald's Flying Saucer and the International UFO Museum And Research Center, both downtown).

We haven't been to White Sand Monument, but it's definitely on our list. I also really want to go back to Carlsbad Caverns to do some of the guided tours. They have one where everyone is given a lantern and that's the only way you have to see your way through the cave. Kinda scary, but probably pretty awesome too! :)

I'm so glad you went to Carlsbad. I've been there two times, once in the 60s and again in the 80s. Out of the numerous caverns I've been able to explore, it is my favorite. I could tell a big difference between my visits to Carlsbad, pre elevator and after. There wasn't the activity of formations like the early years. The Rangers said the elevator shaft caused a draft and started drying up the water. [Before they made it air tight] Thank you for sharing!!!!
@LongLongHoneymoon
@LongLongHoneymoon 4 жыл бұрын
They told an interesting story about the air flow. I think there was a time that the employees would leave doors open to keep air flowing up and down the elevator shaft...and that caused a lot of issues in the caverns (even mold and mildew). They have since changed those practices and the original condition has been restored.

I went thru the caverns back in ‘74, took the natural entrance and yes, took the elevator back up! The big room down there was enormous and had a food area and tables and chairs for visitors to rest and sit and eat. I’m too old now to do the long walk but would love for my kids to see it and we did get to sit and watch the bats fly out. That’s something you never forget, a truly awesome event. Thanks so much for the video and all the extra info about services and place to find camping facilities.😉👍😁 Happy Thanksgiving week to you both😊

We were there at Carlsbad Cavern in 2004. Top 5 places I've been. We were those people who the Ranger led out at the end of the day. Never rushed us. Let me setup my tripod and illumination several times and seemed more interested in my pictures than getting us out of there. Did not see the bats but we were there December that visit so missed them. Roswell was an interesting enough tourist trap...

Did both parks together too last year in Nov. Hadn’t been to Carlsbad since 1968. Not a lot has changed, except the tours. Did take a guided tour and you get to go places you can’t on self-guided walk. Next time would do the lantern tour. Spent our worst Walmart overnight in Carlsbad. Parking was near the loading dock and there were trucks delivering all night long and idling a few feet from our RV. Would recommend boondocking on the BLM land closer to the Park instead. Had never heard about Guadalupe before. Loved it! We got one of the nicer sites on the perimeter of the parking lot because we have a small Class C. Took an awesome fall color hike to Devil’s staircase. Highly recommend. BTW/ National Park mystery writer/ranger Nevada Barr got her start here.

If you can visit around the beginning of November, in between Guadalupe Mountains and Carlsbad Cavern (notice no "s", it is only 1 cavern!) is McKittrick Canyon. A great place to see fall colors that are unusual for a desert environment.

Should have also mentioned that because of the oil boom in this area, RV spaces are at a premium. More than 100 RV parks have sprung up in Eddy County but most do not meet state requirements (per a recent newspaper article) and are mostly for long term oil field workers. Whites City at the entrance to the road to the Cavern has an RV park but don't know availability. There is a KOA north of Carlsbad and Brantley Lake State park with a campground also north of Carlsbad. Welcome, but be forewarned.

Great Video. Went in the caverns when I was a teenager (45 years ago) and would love to go back. I could do still do the walk down okay, but that elevator is definitely a must to get out. If it broke, I would just have to sleep in the cavern until they got it fixed. LOL
