It's hard for me to really describe what exactly makes Dynamite Headdy so great. It's one of those games that you just gotta experience for yourself at least once to see what makes it special. It's wayy up there with EarthBound and DKC2: Diddy's Kong Quest as one of my favorite games of the 16-bit generation, and one of my favorite games _of all time._ The puppet show motif and the general charm and whimsy and creativity help to compliment the brilliant design and constantly-changing gimmicks. I swear, this game has ADD! It does NOT sit still for a minute with just one same gimmick, it knows what it is, with a lot of heart and challenge, all tied together with an amazing soundtrack, one of my favorites on Genesis, and well, ever, and Headdy's a cute mascot puppet with attitude who's got a crazy creative head-throwing gimmick that the game always utilizes in a clever and meaningful way. No strings attached! It's a very imaginative experience with a bright tone that never fails to put a smile on my face, every time I play it! It's just a piece of art that appeals to my tastes perfectly. I'm glad to see other gamers embrace the game as much as I do. Am I over-selling Headdy? Maybe not everyone thinks it to be the masterpiece that I do, but I really honestly do think DH is just _that_ great. Amazing levels and imaginative bosses from start to finish, never a dull moment, a constant thrill ride with a personality to match! I'm a big fan of Treasure and their insanely eccentric creations like Gunstar Heroes and McDonald's Treasure Land Adventure (more of my all-time faves ha ha) but Dynamite Headdy is my favorite of their games. In closing, it's just a wacky, incredibly imaginative, polished and fun experience all the way through, and of all platformers, I highly recommend this one. :)

Gnam gnam! I like Headdy a little less than Gunstar for a couple reasons: the cuts and changes in the western version (you don't lose *too* much but still, the definitive version is the Japanese one with the fan translation), and the uneven difficulty curve, also with no difficulty levels to select. Beside that, it's one of the best and most creative games of the 16 bit era. The setting of a puppet show and its backstage is just fantastic and allows for a variety of setpieces - bosses may be the stars but everyhing inbetween is a delight too. It's one of the many "corpses" of the era - games that would have deserved some follow-up at least in the following generation (imagine a Saturn Headdy) but on the other hand it has remained fairly unique after a quarter century.
I still can't get over how the first boss is literally just a cat.

In my humble opinion, Dynamite Headdy (at least the Western release) is a game tailor-made for Game Genie and save-state abuse. Too bad no actual Game Genie codes exist for it. If it wasn't for the Internet, I would have never gotten to see the end of it. Well, for how far I did get into the game, I did enjoy it. This is one of those games where I'm just like, man, if they could do this on the Genesis with mostly two background layers and 64 colours on-screen, along with some row/line scrolling and layer priority shifting, I really wonder what these guys could have done on SNES if they similarly tried to push it to its limits. I mean, right out the gate, that system has three background layers and 256 colours on-screen, along with the same row/line scrolling and layer priority shifting, and the additional window/shape masking, HDMA and proper multi-coloured semi-transparency too. So, really, in terms of the backgrounds, it could do most of the stuff seen here but even better. The sprite stuff is more of a challenge, but the SNES is still no slouch there either. So, yeah, I'd love to have seen people with this level of all-round talent try to make the SNES shine.
