Game Info:
Dynasty Warriors 9 (真・三國無双8, Shin Sangoku Musou 8) is the ninth main entry of the Dynasty Warriors series. It was first teased by Kou Shibusawa at 2016 PlayStation Press Conference in Japan and formally revealed during Koei's web program Koei-Tecmo Greatest Ever Line Up Special on December 17, 2016.
Akihiro Suzuki returns as producer. He has stated that he wants to refresh the one-man superhero experience from the ground up, including new changes to the series's familiar charge attack system.
The game will be dubbed in Mandarin for the Chinese port.
The Treasure Box edition of the game includes an original soundtrack, a set of character clear cards, and an illustration book.
Gameplay
Following in the footsteps of Toukiden 2, this game will be the first open world entry for the series. Players will be able to explore the full scope of the battlefield and visit nearby cities or towns. The map has over 10 unique cities where items and other services may be purchased.
A day and night cycle similar to Samurai Warriors: Spirit of Sanada is implemented.
Weather changes in real time during battles and may hamper the enemy's awareness.
Encountering a panda in the wild may cause it to aid players with bonuses.
Long-range bow attacks from earlier titles return, though the firing view is in third-person. Can be used to detonate oil cans from afar. Various types of arrows are also available for players to collect.
Players can use grappling hooks to invade enemy castles or climb high mountains.
Additional actions include double jumping, evading, and fishing.
The new state combo system changes the character's attacks depending on their position against surrounding enemies. It comprises of three sequential attacks.
Trigger Attack - Initiates a combo by rendering an opponent vulnerable through stunning, juggling, etc.
Flow Attack - Hits the target with an array of attacks based on their current state.
Finish Attack - Finishes up the combo with a powerful attack.
Characters can perform a special action unique to them by pressing Circle and R1 simultaneously.
Weapon switching combos have been removed, though players can still swap weapons through the pause menu.
Story Mode will strictly follow historical events while putting emphasis on individual stories like in Dynasty Warriors 5. Major battles become easier by finishing prior missions leading up to the event itself. Clearing scenarios is necessary to upgrade existing features of the game.
While traveling in-between areas, players may come across hostile tribes, animals, or heavily-guarded supply units. Defeating supply units earn valuable items and money, but doing so will have an impact on upcoming battles.
Sub-quests include hunting wild animals and fighting with foreign tribes.
New modes of transportation have been added. While the swimming feature is back, players may opt to ride boats to reach distant areas faster.
Characters will only be playable in their corresponding eras.

The cloning weapons/moves will never make sense to me whatsoever. The characters with their PERSONALIZED weapon was what made them UNIQUE and gave players more of a preference and option of learning or having more variety. Not only that, they went and removed some of the character's (imo) signature weaponry. Diao Chan has a whip? Zhen Ji has a whip? Cai Wenji has a whip? Pange De has a mace? I mean for god's sake Zhang He now has throwing daggers? Wtf. Just really questionable decisions from Koei.

tnargtnarud haha sorry didnt mean anything bad, well, i was just comparing whip to flute and harp, if KOEI really wanted to be realistic, everybody would use spear, sword, or polearms. my point was, whips are more realistic to use rather than flute and harp, since were talking about Zhen Ji, Wang Yuanji, and Diao Chan. as for weapons like nunchaks, fans, flying swords, small boats, wooden bench, they are by no mean realistic anyway. its not a big issues anyway, at least for me. been playing since dw3 and already got so used to the various weapon changes.

Cao rin without a shield Wang Yi without her weapon which was one of the best which look like a wolf fangs which is perfect with her character. Yue jin without his hookblades which give him speed but now he has tewin clubs. Zhang He without his claws even though he has one of the best compo in DW8. Sun Ce without his tonfa. Fa Zheng what the hell is the deal with his weapon!?. Xu Shu's weapon was the best weapon combo for me but now he has a sword, how sad.

Idk with you guys, but as a guy who played DW series and ROTK series throughout the years, I actually wanted to see KOEI prepared more than one model for characters that lived long. I mean, it wouldnt hurt to see there are "young" and "old" version of characters. it kinda broke the immersion when Zilong appeared in battle for Han Zhong with the same young guy appearance when he was fighting the yellow turban. . I mean, it would be awesome if we can see figures like Sun Quan who ascended to the throne in young age and change into the older, more charismatic leader. I mean, they all started young and grew older along the story, right?

The nostalgia with this music really hits man. Damn its so good! I remember back in 5 when I played a custom officer as a regular soldier. With the 1-2 normal attacks only, then grinding up the ranks and becoming a captain after serving under Zhao Yun. Zhou Yu eventually came and tried to have me come serve under him in Wu.

Not a fan of clones, but I'll probably suffer through. Part of my problem is the devs going 'hey yeah! we can't have flying swords cause realism...' yet they have rakes, giant iron balls, massive swords, and that sword-fan just throws that argument right out the window. If they'd just been honest and said they cut movesets because they had to revamp the game-flow for open world... i might be more willing to forgive em... Oh well... here's hoping the movesets get dlc'd back in. Maybe by empires I won't have anything to complain over. XD

All of the weapons you cited are based on actual weapons that existed at the time. Yes even the sword-fan. It was nowhere near as intricate of course, but a weapon extremely similar did exist. The giant iron balls are called a meteor hammer. Gogo in the movie Kill Bill uses it. For the rake you need to consider a very large portion of the army was made up of peasants. Also Lu Su was a farmer himself before being enlisted by Wu. In fact it's because he shared his crop and farm techniques with Wu soldiers that hewas enlisted in the first place. So his rake is a reference to this. That said, you could easily kill someone with a rake designed to plow hard soil, so it's not far fetched at all as a weapon. The massive swords are based on zhanmadao. Literally "horse chopping sabers". Guess what their intended use was? For reference they were about 200cm long (6.5 feet) The main difference is they were actually rather thin. They resemble katana's more than anything, only 1000 years before katana existed.

The flying swords are a common wuxia/xanxia weapon. But i guess that's not realistic. So what about Yueyings Warscythe? They're called Ge and were used on actual battlefields for at least a hundred years. That's probably alot more field use than the fansword or the snake sword ever got. Oh yeah... Those are both wuxia weapons too by the way. Or Sun Ce's tonfa? Another actual weapon that got cut for some reason. The point is... They're picking and choosing based not on what is 'realistic' or what isn't. They made cuts to the moveset roster because they had to spend more time coding other things. 'Realism' is just a stupid excuse. Zhou Tai's China-Katana being what appears to be a dao moveset with a katana skin is proof of their limited timeframe. That's not even mentioning the magic wand weapons that Jia Chong (i think it was him) was shown using in one gameplay video. I can almost... ALMOST guarantee alot of the old 'unrealistic' movesets will come back as dlc. I just don't like stupid excuses. That's all.

I was merely pointing out that what they were replaced with or the ones you specifically pointed out were also completely real. Regardless it was just an excuse and Koei shot themselves in the foot for saying it. The real reason is simply due to the new combat system, they trimmed down the weapon count to make it easier to work with and program thus the cloning.

They should of halved the size of these places for better performance and allowed that to carry over to have more enemies. the open world is just... really flawed. @@Uknown291 dude im literally playing dw3 on my emulator right now. I miss the bodyguard system where you could have just some normal units. also 5 weapon tiers. Each character with their own story as well. The open world idea is great but they need to invest serious resources and talent into making it work properly. hopefully dw9 was a base to work from.

Zhurong and Yue Ying look the best to me so far. But overall design of all characters is very similar to how they used to look in DW5, at least some of them that were playable back there. I'm so mad they took Zhen Ji's flute and Zhang He's claws AGAIN. But what pains me the most is Lu Lingqi's double spike that was fucking iconic. I don't want Xing Cai pt2.

If they really going through with this whole cloned weapon, Zhang liao should have the guandao like his dw 4 & 5 counterpart, not Li dian. Give the twin axe to Pang de for the same reason, and give the spiked mace to Li dian since his previous weapon is spiky as well

I think I prefer the skin on dw 8, it seems more “characteristic” than the dw 9 since they made it more realistic and closer to real human. Especially diao chan on dw 6, she seems cuter and sweeter or, lets just say have some character in her face profile (somehow diao chan looks very different on dw 9 almost unrecognizable). And Tbh its sad to see most of the unique weapons taken out and replaced to more realistic weapon, it makes dw have more and more serious tones (especially the storyline. They made it more into the war and strategy rather than other story like the romance. For example the romance between diao chan and lu bu) but i still love the series either way. My love wont fade, still love it since the first dynasty warrior game.

Characters with the same weapons and movesets, Dynasty Warriors 4 and 5 did a good job of differentiating everyone, but then 6 brought back a lot of clones (it was the worst one so far), 7 changed things up but still had a lot of clones while 8 gave every single character their own unique weapon and moveset while still having access to every other weapon. It's disappointing to see that they're bringing back clones again.

I actually liked the clone system on DW7. It was done right there since every character had his own attack and musous. I suppose its not possible right now to give each warrior their own moveset since this is a new combat system. With 8 it was possible since 7/8 was almost the same. Im pretty sure an "advanced edition", or probably 9 will feature less/no clones at all. Give them a break.
