In the Three Kingdoms books, Cao Cao was desperate to get Chen Gong to join him. Chen Gong preferred death over serving him, and walked to execution with his head held high. Cao Cao actually walked beside him all the way with tears in his eyes, practically begging him to change his mind. The games never show how principled Chen Gong truly was.

Wait till you get this gem in the novel. After Xiapi, Chen Gong and Gao Shun were executed (both faced it with dignity). Zhang Liao was willing to accept death. In contrast to Lu Bu, who pleaded for mercy, Zhang Liao cussed Cao Cao endlessly and refused to surrender. Cao Cao was pissed off enough to bring a sword and wanted to decapitate him personally. Zhang Liao responded by sticking his neck out and welcoming death. Liu Bei 刘备 and Guan Yu 关羽 intervened and pleaded for Zhang Liao to be spared. Impressed by Zhang Liao's righteousness and courage, Cao Cao then put down his sword and personally unbound Zhang Liao, though not before executing Lu Bu.

I can't say I blame the voice actors themselves for that one entirely. While they were admittedly mostly up-and-comers some were also dedicated fans of the series. I get the sense the voiceover efforts were overbudgeted on the Mandarin localization for their Chinese audience and ended up leaving the western localizations with less time and resources to properly direct the voice-acting or even refine the translations (I swear the lines in the DW9 cutscene here are almost nonsensical at times.) I do agree with the iconic OG voices though: to me Jamieson Price and Douglas Rye are basically to Lu Bu and Cao Cao what Mark Hamill and Kevin Conroy are to The Joker and Batman.

@@Megumi_Bandicoot So true Cao Ang. They made Chen Gong in the novels a bit more noble, but completely arrogant. The games pumped the personality to the extreme until DW9., which is a little closer to his historical self. Personally the real life Chen Gong was way more interesting in his relationship with Cao Cao. He was a friend and servant of Cao Cao, and along with some of Cao Cao's most trusted friends and aides, rebelled and tried to hand Cao Cao's base of power over to Lu Bu as he was massacring Tao Qian's population, which is likely what spurned the action. Despite this huge betrayal and the years spent fight against Cao Cao to the bitter end, when it came time to be executed, Cao Cao was desperately trying to convince him to go under his service again. Chen Gong refused, but not out of spite. Rather, he told Cao Cao to uphold the law and execute him for both his betrayal and his earlier offer to surrender or otherwise undermine his own authority. Cao Cao commanded he be decapitated and his head be placed on a Pike on the city walls... but Cao Cao wept at Chen's demise. However, it wasn't the end of the story, Cao Cao took it personally upon himself to raise Chen Gong's children along with his own children at the palace, when normally such enemies families are massacred en mass. I find this historical bit far more interesting then the novel and a part of me hopes the games add a little more of the real events then the novel to future releases.

He mostly comes off very level headed most of the time (which helps given who he works for). I simply do a little headcanon where Gongtai does hold the grudge but keeps it to himself and chooses not to dwell on it after Cao Cao is defeated. I've watched the Three Kingdoms many times, by the way. Great series.

DW8 Xtreme Legends did it best with all three characters. Cheng Gong's and Lu Bu's arrogance did them in, and Zhang Liao acted with true principle. Not only that, but their facial animations, voice lines, and ambiance was phenominal. Even the bit with Lu Lingqui was so tear-jerking. You could really see the anguish on her face as she finally turns her back on her father and Lu Bu's protective instincts as her father.

Can we just talk about the fact that Lu Bu's and Cao Cao's voice actors are SO iconic? Like, if I met any of them in real life I would assume I'm talking to resurrected warriors that lived two thousand years ago. Furthermore, HOW could Koei think that changing their voice actors for DW9 was a good idea? Now when I'm playing it, I'm no longer scared shitless when I see Lu Bu on the battlefield, like I was in previous games. I'd literally take time for a 30 minute prayer before crossing blades with him at Hu Lao Gate. Most of the time, I couldn't even deliver a single blow at him because he was always the ULTIMATE boss, even when you're literally on the second mission. But in DW9, you can firstly die of laughter because his new voice actor is really funny, and you can also kill him with only your Musou attack. They really fucked up. Also why is Lu Lingqi's weapon changed? It was also really iconic to see her inherit her father's legendary weapon in DW8, where she was possibly the strongest female character (when she's upgraded to the fullest), but now she has the same weapon as Xing Cai and I'm already over her, even if she's my favorite character. Disappointed.

Historically, it was Liu Bei who was the final word that condemned Lu Bu to death as Cao Cao was very close to recruiting him until Liu Bei reminded him of Dong Zhuo's betrayal and death at the hands of Lu Bu. At that moment, Lu Bu cursed and threatened Liu Bei for mentioning this to Cao Cao. For this, Cao Cao condemned Lu Bu to death by hanging. @@MrAsaqe Actually historically, Cao Cao was a good man but felt he had to be harsh and sometimes cruel to achieve his goals. This is why he respected Liu Bei despite them being enemies. They had similar goals, but how they went about them, is what made them enemies in the end. Cao Cao is portrayed as evil or cruel because he showed that side in his campaigns against Wu and Shu. He showed them what they needed to see. Hero, Villian, Conqueror, Savior. Those words applied to Darth Revan in Star Wars but those same words could be applied to others like Cao Cao. Or Nobunaga Oda. After doing some research into Cao Cao, I came to understand him better as a whole and the situation he was put into in his life. Its about stepping back to see the entire picture. If anyone was about selfish gains for power, that was his advisor that replaced Guo Jia....Sima Yi. Cao Cao knew Sima Yi was a threat to all he fought for, but at the same time he was too invaluable to throw away either.

In DW9 he was portrayed quite well, I actually found the discussion between him and Cao Cao quite good. Cao Cao desperately wants him to join, and so tells him that he will kill his men unless he surrenders and bends the knee, Chen Gong then states that the victor would dictate the rules, which puts the blame on Cao Cao if anything happens to his men, regardless of whether Chen Gong bends the knee or not, smartly allowing him to oppose Cao Cao, whilst also saving the lives of his men.

Lu Bu was not big on logistics but he did have a mind for strategy and combat all these representations of him as a total moron for the strength are ridiculously inaccurate and he did betray several he served but not without a valid reason especially considering his adoptive father tried to murder him so Lu Bu just killed him first. He even surrendered to save lives of his men when he could've fought to the bitter end and take many, many of the enemy with him.

According to the Romance of Three Kingdoms Era, Cao Cao was about to let Lu Bu Serve under him but then Liu Bei reminded Cao Cao that Lu Bu once served under Dong Zhuo. Lu Bu barked threats at Liu Bei but those were to be the last words he ever spoke. The ever Not-so-Popular Dynasty Warriors Anime didn't portray that at all but Kongmeng could have wrote an entire Manga on what happened during that era. In other scenario games like Dynasty Tactics, You can let Lu Bu live but Lu Bu had a history of Betrayal in his ranks of Officers so that much was also something to keep in mind. My Brother was playing it at one time. Let Lu Bu Join Cao Cao and Xiahou Dun Betrays you. Not only that, Expect a VERY Long Game. The Time was maxed out to 99:59 on how many battles were fought after that. Also.... How "Smart" is Lu Bu?

That scene in DW8, is unforgettable. I come back to watch it every now and then. I grew up with dynasty warriors, lu bu was more than just some hard-to-beat enemy, or a vagrant badass. He was an icon, and always has been. That DW8 death scene, was the death scene he deserved.

Cao cao is quite the interesting character. He makes mistakes without realizing it but he'll listen to your side of the story as well. Cao Cao himself knows we all need to be challenged and that he's no exception. Unlike Lu Bu. That said I think killing Lu Bu is a bad example in Cao Cao's grand plans of peace. Kill one monster, another takes their place. Maybe ten. Making the best from the worst is difficult and hard. Perhaps the hardest thing one can ever do. But if you can make the best from the worst and get someone that stubbon to believe in an idea then that's something that can't be killed. Pick any fight, conflict or empire that crumbles to dust because of the "I see the worst of you" attitude. Even Cao Cao's empire falls victim to this. Makes me wonder what would have happened if someone went up to Cao Cao and went "There's two kinds of people in this world. The monsters themselves and those that make them without even knowing". But that would contradict with the lore. But it could be good for the alternate history route. Would also need to have a character that really talks on Cao Cao's level that challenges his viewpoints and asks good questions throughout the game.

Its a damn shame they have yet to due Chen Gong narrative justice. Not only was he a good man, who helped Cao Cao escape at the cost of his position because he thought Cao was noble, only to abandon him when he saw what a ruthless monster Cao could be when he murdered an entire family over a misunderstanding. THAT is why he sought out the strongest warrior- Because he was afraid of what Cao would mean for the nation if he won. When he was captured, both he AND Zhang Liao met their fate with dignity (while Lu Bu whined like a little girl). Cao BEGGED Chen Gong to join him, but he refused and walked to the headsman himself, Cao crying and begging him the whole way. Come on, Koei. He has a great design, but do him narrative justice! Maybe the scene with Cao killing that family over a comment about a pig is just too dark for them to do...I dont think it is...Its a missed opportunity that they havent represented that part yet, and how it bound the fate of Chen Gong and Cao Cao for all of history!

In Souten Kouro, it's not that Chen Gong was good, but that he wanted to _look_ good. He didn't oppose Cao Cao for moral reasons, but that he felt serving Cao Cao would give him a bad look.
