"Play it on harder modes!" I always start DW games on Normal for a while, then move onto Hard when I upgrade weapons. But this game was so fucking unfun I just lost all heart and didn't worry about it. However, for those squirming to negate my criticism, a few things: You can scream "hard mode" all day long. None of that negates ANY of my criticisms though. Even on harder modes, the map is still flat, the walls still scalable, the target enemy still signposted and right in front of you. I wasn't the one who put siege-negating grappling hooks and fast travel in it. I'm not gonna NOT use them, people. I shouldn't be made to redesign the game by restricting myself from using things in a desperate attempt to make the game more fun. Oh, and here's a tip from a DW veteran - when starting out any DW game in the past, they were still fun on normal mode. In fact, you'd usually play on Normal until a weapon upgrade before raising the difficulty, but I had a rotten time with this from the outset. So take your "hard mode" defense and put it on the back of a horse with auto-run switched on.

I stand by that argument, because DW on Normal only has a very time limited appeal for me. If I were suffering so much due to the AI in DW9 being too static and boring me to death, I would at least try to switch difficulties rather than assume the entire game is only letting you attack enemies without response.

Y'know, though. If they had taken an idea from Mount and Blade, this could have worked. Imagine playing a more 'open ended' Dynasty Warriors game, where you make your own character (ala Samurai Warriors Chronicles) at the beginning of the game. There are several groups to start, with Wu, Shu, and Wei being the 'defaults' but options for Yellow Turbans, Meng Huo, Dong Zho, Yuan Shao, and the like. Instead of bland location to location riding to scripted events, you'd get Dynasty Warriors gameplay in each battle, and you could choose your own side. Marry into the families, etc. etc. etc... Basically, take the Empires idea, mix in Mount and Blade control schemes for a 'mildly open world' feel.

as someone who hasn't seen this game series before, I can tell this is bad by the series' standards. If you're going to have a huge open world for an action packed game, shouldn't it be carpeted with actual thousands of soldiers, realistic troop movement, and strategy? Not just a boss on a bridge all by itself, or a random garrison where the troops run away the second an assassin kills the leader?

This is a very long reply, so read in in its entirety otherwise you might think I'm defending some of the flaws in this game (which there are admittedly quite a few) when I'm not. I'm critiquing it compared to the other games in the series, and explaining why _some_ of the hate surrounding 9 is based upon faulty reasoning. This game is worthy of criticism, but yours is objectively wrong. The total army of Wei at any given point (the largest of the 3 kingdoms) was only ever around 120,000+ at its height of power. I wouldn't expect 1000's of troops in a given area, thats not how war is fought, most battles would have been skirmishes between a couple hundred or less troops at a time, assigned to their commanding officer. The size of platoons that you encounter are actually much more realistic than people are giving credit for. (and larger anyways than most random groups of enemies you'd find in any other of the warriors games, barring orochi 3 and certain parts of DW 8). Large battles didn't happen too often because armies would have to cover a large amount of ground and have all of their lands and supply routes well fortified. When you kill all of the commanding officers in an area, the moral of the enemy foot soldiers plummets and they run away in panic. That is actually a rather decent mechanic, it's just a little jarring due to the execution in 9. This game got the large scale battlefield combat right, you advance with your armies taking objectives and garrisons. Your armies have supply routes along roads (this is 200 a.d. Common roads and footpaths were where many skirmishes would have taken place) and they advance forward into a front where they meet enemy armies. You can capture points along roads and advance your army, but because this is dynasty warriors, you know, the 1vs1000 hack and slash formula, you don't have to if you don't choose to, just like beating officers in every other dynasty warriors game. You can run straight into the main enemy, like every dynasty warriors game before it, but your army will not follow if they are blocked by miles of enemy encampments that you didn't bother to help them clear (which they can on their own, the battlefield is actually a living one. You can watch troops get deployed and follow them all the way to the front lines). On higher difficulties, just like in every other dynasty warriors game before it (besides 1. A lot of people forget just how different this series is from its origin), your allies lose moral rather quickly, and enemies gain moral quickly, which also makes them more aggressive. In the open battlefield, this translates to enemies pushing your allies back and taking over large swaths of territory. The grappling hook gives you mobility that you can use for whatever purpose that may be, rushing an enemy general, or using the high ground to snipe high value targets. It is definitely not realistic, but it allows the player so many more options, including bum rushing. Allow me to explain something here, this game is flawed, in some areas rather heavily (like voice acting, frame rate issues, and animal ai), but its no more flawed than any other dynasty warriors game before it. This game has added a lot of new to a franchise that is usually the same cookie-cutter formula. It's nothing spectacular by any means, but the mechanics they have introduced have a lot of untapped potential. I think people are quick to compare this game to Nier, or Skyrim, or what have you, but the Warriors franchise never has been that type of breathtaking revolutionary game, thus it would be better to compare this game to its predecessors in order to determine whether or not its a step in the right direction for the series as a whole. I totally understand somebody not liking this game, there are many much better games out there right now, but I fully believe that it is a worthy entry to the series and if the game is like the jump from 1 to 2, and then the far superior 3, where they began to perfect the old dynasty warriors system, then 10 will really be a game to look forward to. This game introduced a lot to build off of, effectively paving the way for the truly well executed next gen warriors games. 9 is very flawed in execution, but its potential and overall innovation should not be overlooked.

Especially when Romance of the 3 Kingdoms is fiction itself, yes based on true events but no most of the characters didn't get heroic deaths, most of them died in pretty normal ways and horrible things happened to them (except Zhao Yun who I think died of old age in the books cos he's a badass). We play Dynasty warriors for entertainment, so frankly I'd prefer if you took it into a weird direction like the 3 kingdoms are teleported to a fantasy world and need to group together to fight the monsters, build a kingdom THEN fight between the 3 of them for it. You know something batshit crazy.

I just finished Lu Bu's campaign. Now I know the voice actors we're shit.... But the voice actor doing Lu Bu's voice apparently doesn't know the difference between the words "Mediate" and "meditate". Lu bu says "meditate" when the subtitles say mediate. I just laughed and stared at the screen for a bit thinking....wow.... They hired the shittiest voice actors for this game, just to save some extra money.

Strangely, this game made me appreciate them more. I went back and played 4 and playing 5 now off and on. They really are much more epic in feel. 4 made me feel more like I was in the story overall and I love the bodyguards and such. 5 has great individual stories and it goes down hill after that one. I actually did play from 2 (not that old, was a kid when I got a Ps2) and at that time; it was just blue, red, green, whatever kill stuff. I've watched it evolve into the most shallow series possible. Even RotK is garbage now. Koei no longer gives a fuck.

In all fairness, as bland as this level and the game in general seem to be, the whole “rush to the end and kill the general to end the level” bit has always been possible in these games. I have question then why did the Omega force game programmers/designers use C# low level language to programme Dw9 on Unity Game Engine pro? When Unity Engine platform is known for it's utter lack of syntax compatibility with old and new end dedicated memory allocation hardwares. This is heartbreaking, the series has always been very niche, but I mean, this looks like it might even be worse than DW6, and for me 6 was the lowest point(I actually quit playing them after that travesty). All they had to do was make a DW game. If they wanted to innovate on combat, they could have just taken a page out of For Honor's book, that combat system would feel so natural in a DW title. Mow through the peons and engage the officers in an intense one on one melee with brutal finishing moves. How could Koei release such awesome gems like Nioh but continue to let down the fans of its flagship franchise, the people keeping them in business?

Just installed the English version. Launched the game as Liu Bei. Heard him speak, cringed. Heard Guan Yu speak later, cringed harder, then I heard Zhang Fei.......NO. I can't even get past the introductory level for Shu because the voice acting is so bad, I can't even begin to describe how little Jim is exaggerating in this video when he says that Dynasty Warriors 3 has more inspired voice acting. I'm absolutely astonished. Seriously, go play the Shu story. See if you can get past how bad the three brother's English voice actors are. I guarantee you can't.

BRBingeDrinker There's a Chinese option as well. Though the comment was about the quality of the voice acting, not the language they were speaking. When he said "clean itself up" he was referring to the cringeworthy English voice acting, not the historical accuracy of the voice acting. Also, how is them speaking Japanese any worse than them speaking English? I'm sure that's not what you meant, but it was implied in your comment, intentional or not. Therefore, your comment doesn't make a lot of sense.

I love Dynasty Warrior 4. Its Hard mode really gives you the feeling of fighting again an army of elite soldiers. The AIs are smart. They block, they jump, they use charge, they counter, they side step and backstab you. The captains even have musou move. To Dynasty Warrior 6 and later games, we are fighting against wood logs. With simply high stats, nothing else.

I always find how I got into Dynasty Warriors extremely funny I played one of the Gundam Dynasty Warriors game and then I found out about this franchise. But I don't know this one just looks so Bland I've never played it of course but and just doesn't seem to have that effect that the other games did as cheesy or monotonous as they got they always had that feel of being a big affect and a huge battle this one just doesn't seem to have

I dropped the DW series right after 5. Until now I only played only the Empires entry because it's the best I could get for a Three Kingdoms RPG game where I could play a game however I like, be a loyal soldier, a scheming strategist, a lone mercenary, or a tyrannical overlord. That's all I wanted out of Dynasty Warriors. No need for open-world at all. Also, I still remember the good old days in 5: Xtreme Legends's Destiny Mode, where I can start as a foot soldier and working my way up the ranks, even changing sides or pretend to if I wish it. God, I love that mode so much. That's how a DW RPG game should be. I'm still upset that it never shows up again in any game after that...

Honestly, if Koei is satisfied with what they've completed in DW9, then they should just stop all together, because they've lost vision and have no sense in direction in how to keep up with modern gaming. Breaks my heart to, I've played every DW since DW2 when I was a kid and this will be the first one I will not touch, very disappointing.

How do open worlds work again? Oh yeah, make sure the quests are 20 miles from each other. Implement a fast travel mechanic because we couldn't bother to fill the map with anything remotely interesting. Oh, don't forget to put the $60 price tag on it. After all, it's only the 9th installment. Doesn't have to be good. No expectations from our supportive customers. I literally thought this was a KickStarter fan-made template for an in-progress beta. I'm absolutely stunned. Destiny 2 had more effort put into it than this.

Wow. I went in thinking there was maybe a love-it-or-hate-it new mechanic that had just really annoyed you... But it sounds like they truly borked everything! Fewer weapons? No good maps? Fired the old voice actors? Open world wasteland instead of actual territorial battles and strategy? No claws on Zhang He!? How did this disaster even get started? THEY ALREADY HAD IT RIGHT! all they had to do was expand on DW8 to be honest. by the end of DW8E they had everyone with a unique fighting style plus all the weapons that all the characters had lost (Crossbow, Nunchuka, Drill Lance, Rapier, Dao Blade, Scythe) . give us a dong zhuo mode (if they had kept the idea of hua xiong and dong bai along with zhang liao, lu bu, diao chan and jia xu also serving dong ) and add the most wanted yuan shu mode (for a completely diffrent story) and call it a day.

@Jovon Pulido well here is some backstory about yuan shu how much of this is fiction from the book and how much of this is from historic i dont know but i know that things that happen in the novel also happen in the games usually so il add everything , first he is yuan shao's half brother. he participated in killing the eunuch's after he jin's assassination, dong zhuo was to give him a promotion but he feared dong zhuo and thus eventually joined hte battle against dong zhuo at hu lao gate. he does not send supplies to sun jian which causes some problems with them. sun jian after dong zhuo fled found the imperial seal. this is important for later. after that he goes to war with yuan shao and liu biao and allies with gongsun zan (so possibly a new battle in the series) , he fights cao cao and yuan shao but repeatedly loses. then sun ce goes to yuan shu and offers him the imperail seal in exchange for military units (this is one thing that helped wu gain a stronger military and eventually gain indipendence from yuan shu as i think they were working for him until that point) . after he gains the imperial seal he declares himself emperor and due to his lifestyle and attitude people start to rebel against him and many warlords around him go to war with him (like liu bei and even his allie lu bu) which eventually led to his demise. his elitist and his im a rich and better than you attitude suits him perfectly considering his title near the end of his reign and the fact hes a member of the yuan family. there is other stuff tha happens like when he and liu bei was fighting and lu bu uses his great archery to get them to form a truce and such but thats basically yuan shu. i think he became crazy popular after DW6 because he appeared as reandforcements usually bringing a massive army for the player to fight in most battles he appeared in. it may also be the amount of battles he participates in considering being an other force or maybe people would like to see a what if yuan shu did become emperor scenario im not sure. i do think he would make a interesting character though for the series.

The Game Slayer Oh you mean’t Shao’s younger brother. I don’t know any romance of the three kingdom’s lore so i didn’t know anything about him but in DW8 empires Yuan Shu is just a generic officer with no unique character model so he gets the same generic dialogue that the other generic officers get but the game did give him his own separate territory that was next too Yuan Shao’s land in one of the timeline eras you can choose too start in so i knew he mustove had bad blood with his family since he was the only Yuan officer in the game that wasen’t serving Yuan Shao but that was mostly a guess since the game i played doesn’t have a story mode so i don’t exactly know the relationships between everyone besides Sun Jian and his two sons i noticed after a certain point in the timeline Sun Ci takes Sun Jian’s place as leader of that dynasty and even later Sun Quan takes over so i figured Those mustove been his kids since they were his successors from the context clues. When i mentioned the snobby dialogue i was referring too Yuan Shao since he’s the only Yuan in dynasty warriors 8 empires too have a unique character model and weapon and get his own dialogue. Which comes off as a cocky and very proud of himself noblemen. Especially during the event battle that happens if you choose too work for Cao Cao. Throughout the fight Yuan Shao goes from over confident guy who thinks he’s the shit too being in denial and disbelief that Cao Cao was winning and constantly referring too how unstoppable the Yuan family is. Kinda gave me the feeling that the Yuan guys were very prominent in other dynasty warrior games as a big bad enemy or somthing along those lines.

"Realism" - and the clone weapons - It was just a shitty excuse to match the release date. They knew this game was going to be incomplete. It's what they do every fucking time - release an incomplete, shitty version of the game, sell some copies, use that money to complete the game - and sell it as an entirely separate game for $60. Then make about 3 variations of the same game with the same assets and take $60 for each of those too. I mean, fuck. The studio works on like 3-5 games at the same time. Fire emblem Warriors, Samurai Warriors, Berserk Warriors, Dynasty Warriors, Attack on Titan - I'd be surprised if the devs aren't completely burnt out. No wonder the quality suffers.

Koei Tecmo really should apologize for making this horrible, broken game. They simply can't ignore the abysmal reception this game has received. Fans are furious. I know several people who have said that they'll never buy another Koei Tecmo game ever again. Koei can't just ignore it all and pretend that the game, and the catastrophic backlash, never happened. Forget and move on is bad strategy here.

Sea Dick I'll agree with Hyrule Warriors, but not with Fire Emblem Warriors on cutting corners. While I like the game, four of the dlc characters are in the game (Oboro,Niles, Navarre, and Owain) and unless they change Navarre and Owain, three of those are clones. In the base roster, the archers all fight the same along with pegasus riders. Unlike DW9, Fe Warriors actually has fun gamplay and decent design so I can get past it.

For those who still recalls the MGSV review, here is the difference: MGSV: -The open nature of the map made it very possible to play it in almost any play style. -There are advantages to exploring the world to do other side missions. -The map wasn't completely flat and barren, as some would say.

This honestly breaks my heart. I've loved every Dynasty Warriors game that I have played (1,2, and 3 are the only ones I haven't played). I was really looking forward to this. My birthday is in February and I had considered this sort of like a birthday present from the world lol, but after watching the gameplay like this, I can see it does not live up to the rest of the series. Damn, Pursuit at Chang Ban was one of the most epic battles of the series! - Block Cao Cao's forces at the bridge - Search for Liu Shan - Fight Xiahou Dun - Protect Liu Bei from all the Generals coming for his head. - Clearing the stage of ALL the red dots was damn satisfying

Even the sieges from the PS2 DW3, 4, and 5 games were more fun and challenging than what you see at 6:36. This is so disappointing that they couldn't even add a row of archers on top of the walls to shoot down at you, set up ambushes in the forest, or made Liu Bei fight back and run away on horseback when he reached half health.

For years people wanting DW to modernize itself, to get on with the times, but you know what? That would mean turning it into another genre! Yes, quality of life tweaks are always welcome, but DW is in its entirety an ARCADE game: There's a stage with fixed and optional objectives, the stylish character you choose with his/her special moves, you beat lots of grunts, THAT'S IT. Would you want Street Fighter to become an open world game? No, it's an arcade fighting game, a fixed stage, you and your opponent and that's enough. So, why the need to turn DW a 3D beat'em up wich even has food inside jars you break like Final Fight, into a open world game? it wont work, just as Pacman wouldn't work as an open world game. Of course, you can make a fun open world DW game, but you'll have to add all the things that make successful open world games fun, but then, would it still be DW, the arcade game?... I hope this is just a one off.

Just to be devils advocate Pacman did work as a platformer, the pacman world games are great. Dynasty and Samurai warriors do scratch the itch for a history nerd like me, usually in the encyclopedia section, but to get a greater sense 'of the period' should always be a goal..the gameplay however is what it is, the bread and butter of the franchise, if you alter or lessen that you're shooting yourself in the foot. I just wish we'd get a Kessen 4, i might be the only person in the world who might put Kessen 3 in their top 10 games of all time, i'm sure their philosophy for DW9 would work better as a Kessen game.
