Another gap in the ever growing Dyson collection, the DC23 Motorhead. A large and heavy cleaner and one of the few Dyson cylinder machines to feature an electrically driven power head.

The plastic part on the hose is the swivel point, usually with cylinders they swivel at the hose cuff. That plastic part is actually the end of the hose when the wand is extended

The shape of the powerhead reminds me of so many rug tools on canisters and powerheads on uprights in the Art Deco style popular on vacuums during the 1930's and 1940's.

Generally the rattle can be cured by replacing the two end caps on either side of the brush. Just about any Dyson I've seen that's had some use and uses the removable end caps starts to do that.

I never understood why Dyson decided to discontinue production of their power heads, in favor of having turbo heads on their canister machines. Always seemed like a step backward to me.

I didn't know you had a refurbished vacuum cleaner, I only wanted to learn how to operate and empty it. I don't see that what _you_ would replace is relevant, unless you were reviewing the refurbisher.

I think it's just used a lot, but it certainly does not run as smoothly as a new one or one that's little used. I also own 2 dyson vacuum cleaners my self and I know if the filters are quite old then the vacuum just runs not that good, washing does not help more than that. In time, a filter must simply be replaced. So just replace the filter and then it should run like new again. But I'm afraid you have to replace the powerhead with a new one. And by the way, I like to watch your videos! I'm a fan! haha.

I may only need to replace the end caps to stop the rattling noise, but I will probably end up getting a complete new powerhead.

One of best for me Dc23 animal first Dyson i purchased think about 10 year ago seems that long ive had it until yesterday and my life was destroyed as it give up. Still in very good condition modt parts i never even used that come with with it. Car ket etc. On dc23 animal the hose dettaches from the handle witch was very good for cleaning blands, car etc with the brush. Was so gutted about my Hoover ive come to point its had its days 😩so all parts been removed and am looking to buy new one hopefully 🤞

Looks so good. I really can't understand why Dyson won't make powerhead canisters. Their nozzle design and brushrolls are so much better now what they used to be. Modern Dyson powerhead would be very good. This DC23 has very loud "screamer" motor. Just like I remember them from the past. I don't think that it's broken. Still very desirable vacuum.

I would like to see a powerhead version of the Animal Ball canister I unboxed recently, even if it was just a mains powered version of the heads they include with the cordless machines.

Have you seen the canister vacuums from Dyson available in Japan? They have the powered cleaner heads sold with the V6, V7, V8 and V10 cordless vacuums. I contacted Dyson to see if they would consider making these available in the U.K./EU. Their response is that the turbine tools on the European models work effectively as they pack in more raw suction power than the Japanese canister vacuums, which have a smaller motor. I’m not convinced that’s the case following the new EU rulings. Looks like we’ll never get to see another powered motor head on a Dyson canister in the U.K. now James Dyson has pledged to stop developing corded vacuums.

Yes, I've looked at them on Dyson's Japanese website. No, we probably won't see much development on corded vacuums from Dyson in the future.

Excellent video once again Roger. The ball on the hose seems to prevent too much of the hose being slid into the wand. Dyson’s electrified hose for this Motorhead is actually ingeniously anchored at the very bottom of the innermost wand. When you extend the wand, the hose disappears as far into the telescopic wand as is needed. I imagine the ball prevents too much of the hose from sliding into the tube, or perhaps gives you something to grab to pull it out to give you the maximum length possible. Though this is better than having many electrical contacts in the wand/hose configuration (often needing service repairs), it unfortunately results in a very bulky handle that can not be removed for cleaning in confined spaces.

Nope, that piece is to allow the hose to swivel and wirelessly maintain the electricity through it.

It has no user serviceable post motor HEPA filter according to the online manual - yet a replacement filter is listed for it costing £49, so I assume you would need to strip the machine in order to get to it to replace it? They still do sell complete powerheads from Dyson direct for £75. It looks like these came out in mid 2009, so its possibly from 2009 / 2010 sort of timeframe.

its actually quite easy to replace, i took mine out just for the fun of it years ago and it was only 4 screws, overall its been a really good vacuum for me for nearly 10 years, only washed the pre filter a handful of times, although the bristles fall off the powerhead a bit to quickly, (mine had two hard floor heads along with the powerhead) now he just needs to try a dc17 as well

The V6 powerheads (both types) with the carbon fibre filaments are renowned for losing all their black carbon fibre filaments as well, so were the DC50 brushrolls, and others too - They seemed to have solved that issue by the time the V8 was released as they modified the black bristles on its powerhead.

You are missing another brush which has much stiffer bristles. That "Line of Shame" is where the belt for the brushes is. The Gap where there are no brush bristles is over an inch wide. For whatever reason, you always seem to place the worst balls of hair and other crap directly in line of where the belt is. The only thing that bugs me about the vac, is the teeny tiny passage at the end of the hose, it chokes down to less than the area of your thumb.
