Thank you for pointing out the differences in the battery. The newer battery with 36V will most likely provide more efficient and torque power for the more powerful motor compared with the older 25.2V in Auto & Max mode which matches the test result. Since both have the similar total watt hour capacity therefor the runtime would be similar as well; however, the newer battery will actually provide more efficiency at higher motor torque. The longer footprint and more evenly distribution battery cell in weight will provide more stability when the unit is standing in upright position with less chance of tipping over when smaller attachment tools or even the Torque Screw Tool attachment is connected. I agree that the airflow restriction is caused by the new build-in combination tool; however, I think the newer motor with extra 14% suction power is to compensate this lost especially in ECO mode and may not be related to the newer designed battery pack. Still wishing Dyson would intergrade the laser into the Digital Motorhead and even the Torque Screw Tool as well as it is 1000% easier to do the cleaning maintance than the Soft Roller Head with all the long animal hairs tangled on both end of the roller drive barrels that takes half an hours to clean each time. Thanks again for this excellent detailed comparison review on both Gen5 and V15 for me to pickup all the differences. As the Gen5 is now on sale with less price difference to the V15 during the holidays season I will be interested to get one now.

dyson v15 detect also has a hepa filter except it filters down to 0.3 micron as opposed to 0.1 micron on the gen5 detect

That 0,3 doesn't pass the limits for HEPA in European standards anymore, because they changed the standard. That's why they can't market the older models as HEPA anymore.

I think carpet deep cleaning tests are somewhat of a myth, although good for comparison purposes. I say this because ive had a v15 for 4 years, and i have a Bissell big green carpet washer (they look like a Rug Doctor) and every time i wash the clarets, next to no grit, sand or carpet fibres are extracted. This is usually the case when using it on carpets or houses where the owners vacuums aren’t as good, so i think thats a testament to how good Dysons, even the cordless ones are. I have a Big Ball Animal for an Airbnb of mine which is the best vacuum ive used for cleaning carpets, and is generally a joy to use, but the cordless Dysons are so easy to use coupled with their performance, i really do think they are worth the price. They just need to sort out a few niggling build quality issues, as the V-ball wheel axels on the motorheads are proving fairly weak among a lot of owners.

You can't compare Ah/MAh ratings across vacuums of different voltages. You need to compare Wh ratings, where the Gen5 has a 90Wh rating (2.5Ah at 36V), and the V15 has a 90.7Wh (3.6Ah at 25.2V) rating, meaning the batteries are roughly the same capacity. It even says that on them (rounding up on the V15 aside).

Have the V15 and I see Gen5 still has hair removal issues with the fluffy optic cleaner head. The small black wheels get clogged with pet hair and I am frequently fighting with it with a knife to them cut out. I wish Dyson would re-design it with wheels removal capability for cleaning.

Do you think that the dyson gen5 detect can replace an upright vacuum?

I don't it can given its limitations with power and run time. But it can deep clean small areas

I am a house keeper. My boss just purchased gen5 detect for a big house. I amo so happy because the upright was too heavy. The timing of vacuuming was cut in half. I am battling arthritis, so it is hard. I believe you will be happy with the results. The house has 4 area rugs, a guest room and home theater with carpet. I do love the results. The sofa tool is not great, but I have a hand vacuum for that. I need to get used to dealing with all the extra tools.

Just got it and I've gotta say that as a woman I prefer the switch over the trigger. It's already a tad tiring on the forearm after around 20 minutes of holding, but if you also add having to push a trigger it will be even more tiring for the arm, I prefer having an on and off button. For that feature alone the price is worth it, it cost us only less than 100 euro more than the v15, you can find it cheap from resellers! Anyways, that's my 2 cents. I weightlift and it gets heavy for me, but perhaps if you're stronger it won't make a difference.

Im a man who goes to the gym and still much prefer the power on/off button, simply because its annoying and tiring having to constantly hold down the trigger. The only downside with the Gen5 is you cannot attach the crevice tool to the end of the pipe to reach those high up places with this particular attachment.

In my opinion it's a bit overpriced. I got it and works very nice (first Dyson I own). A friend of mine has the V11 and there is a reasonable difference, do not know compared to the V15. In short, I think it's a bit overpriced.

Ummm, no? You just remove the highest attachment from the base? Or am I missing something? 😅 I have this Dyson, and you can attach any piece directly to the base. If you are using attachment on the bar, you just remove the bar from the base, the built in shorter bar will stay on it's place inside the bigger bar.

These machines have a fault where the screen goes blank if the machine gets blocked. It’s not always going to happen, but it can do. Also sometimes the machine doesn’t show when it’s blocked and the screen either goes back to normal or goes blank and the power button becomes unresponsive until battery taken out and put back in again. Another claim Dyson Made is saying 262 air watts (on max) but now since Samsung claim 280 air watts, Dyson are now fabricating results and say they have 280 air watts! So not sure why Dyson do this and can get away with it. It seems the brush bar gets stalled very easily on this machine!
