After repairing a faulty Dyson fan previously, I thought I'd have a go at repairing a Dyson Hot And Cool Fan which was advertised on eBay for spares or repair.
It was described as having "no power", come with me as I disassemble it and attempt to repair it...What horrors will we find!

FANtastic detective work, a shame that you couldn't get the parts, but that might be the reason why they discontinued them because of a fault, as always looking forward to the next video

I heard that due to such poor quality control at Dyson, sometimes a working appliance would get out undetected.

@@BuyitFixit I am actually in Australia, but let me check whether the shipping would be too expensive. I’d be keen to see whether you can make it work again. You do a great job explaining the electronics. I think there should be more channels like yours - educative and showing that you not always have to dispose of a product just because a fuse blown or some wire got loose.

It looks like someone made a big mistake while trying to repair it, maybe feeding high voltage into the board somehow, and that caused the big disaster there.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 4 ай бұрын
I think what happened was the main motor control IC shorted internally (It takes high and low voltages) and it fed the high voltage back into the low voltage parts. This can also happen when a MOSFET blows. It can feed the high voltage back down the gate pin destroying whatever controls it.

Dyson may have lead the way with innovative designs, and I can;t deny they have designed some great stuff. But whenever I hold a dyson product it just feels cheap and tacky to me. I had a Dyson ball vacuum cleaner earlier this year, brilliant suction, but the plastic felt cheap, flimsy and brittle.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 9 ай бұрын
Totally agree, the quality of this product doesn't seem as good as the earlier version of the fan I looked at. For instance this one has a plastic bush it rotates on, whereas the earlier version had a nice metal bearing and shaft.

This Dyson AM09 HOT + COLD is now a VERY EXPENSIVE PAPERWIEGHT 4 years later!!! H2 errors left and right.. I turn on the heater setting and NO MATTER WHAT SPEED< it's stuck on SPEED 1 (LOW) and then suddenly an HOUR OR 2 later, it will suddenly increase speed... I cannot go passed speed 7 because it will almost instantly go to H2 ERROR. It's plugged directly into the wall. I opened it up there and there was HARDLY ANY DUST Dyson is USELESS and just offered 20% off a brand new one.. But they don't make these anymore so you are stuck with a $1000 purifier....
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
I think H2 might be a hall effect error. I think the unit I repaired showed similar with the motor unplugged. Perhaps the wiring going to the motor or the motor itself if faulty? I got a replacement motor quite cheap from Aliexpress £10 or so...
@thecamarogarage
@thecamarogarage Жыл бұрын
@@BuyitFixit it only occurs in hot mode. The speed works perfectly fine in cool mode.. I could have it set to 10 on cool, then switch to hot and while says speed 10, it's running at 1.. then perhaps 1 hour or more longer and it suddenly will increase speed...
@BuyitFixit

Just did a quick search and this seems a common problem :( unfortunately I don't have any experience with a unit with this error. I might try and get one at some point to diagnose the problem but they don't seem very reliable or well made even from what I've discovered so far.. the cool fan I looked at seemed better built than the hot and cold version.
@thecamarogarage

@@BuyitFixit yeah it almost seems like they made it so the customer can't easily clean it to take apart. To unplug the top, they run the wires thru to the bottom Parr thru a bunch of channels and clips instead of simple plugs. Can only imagine what a pain in the ass tech repairs for dyson must deal with....

Hmm. Faulty hermal cut out? or theres a temperature sensor on a small board with red wires going to it. It that was faulty perhaps? I've not really looked at the heater side of things but there was possibly two elements in the top section. Check both have the same resistance.

Hello, thanks for you're videos and sharing your knowledge. I have this fan, Dyson actually did a recall on some of these as these had the potential to cause a fire internally on the PCB (like yours) I was able to identify the power chip from your 2nd video luckily, mine was beyond reading numbers off it. I have the fan up an running now but have an unusual issue. If it's on heat and I try to oscillate it, the fan cuts out and "E1" is displayed, this also happens if I power down the unit correctly and then move it to another socket, I have to go through a routine to get that error to clear. I'm thinking it's a the power drop as the element cuts in being registered as "power cut off" Would you have an idea of where I should check, initially I'm thinking resistor/capacitor on the feedback circuit??? Sorry to bother you with this
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 6 ай бұрын
No problem 👍glad my video was able to help you. I'm not sure on the new problem you have. Does it only do it when oscillating? I think there is an electrolytic capacitor on the output of the power supply chip, but I think that would probably just make the MCU reset.
@davidmonk7773
@davidmonk7773 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for replying, it will oscillate normally on cool setting without issue, raise the temperature and it will continue oscillating until I assume the power it put to the heating element, it's at that point the E1 error appears and the unit locks out. The E1 apparently is when the unit gets switched off incorrectly( i.e the wall plug) but this unit gives that error regardless of shut down once the power is removed and supplied again, It's odd

Great video . What's the part just under your thumb at 15:10? Had a look at pcb,everything looks ok, except from that part.. As this is not my field of knowledge - just wondering if replacing that part would fix the problem?
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
I actually fix this in another video (well another PCB that a subscriber sent me) and that part which is a power supply chip had failed. When you plug the fan in, if that part is working you can hear a high pitched wine from it. You should also have 5v coming out of the regulator which is a little bit futher to the right of the part. It has two legs and a solder tab (U2). Be careful as this circuit is not isolated from the mains!

@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit Жыл бұрын
Sorry, I don't really take in repairs, but if it is the heating element then you won't be able to replace it as the top section is plastic welded together and opening it will destroy it, that's why replacement heaters aren't available on the internet. I'd suggest seeing if you could buy a replacement top section second hand fro Ebay if it's definitely the heater.

Two ways, ask Dyson (doubtful) , or read it from the MCU, but it would probably be read protected. It may be possible to perform a glitch attack on a working one or something to bypass it if its protected, but that's all I can think off the top of my head.
