How To Fix A Dyson Fan / Dyson Fan Repair [3 Separate Faults]
We're going to have a look at a Dyson Fan I bought from eBay which was advertised as spares or repair.
The fan seems to have 3 different faults. The first is it displays F2 and does not blow, it also turns as soon as its plugged in, and it seems like there are some cogs broken in the base!

I watched your lengthy repairs with great interest. It was a lot of hard work and it was fun. If I have an electronic product, I watch disassembly and repair videos eagerly. It's a habit I have since I have free time after retirement. Because repair is a pleasure. It will last as long as my eyesight can handle it. Capacitor C51 was out of order on my Dyson AM06. Now no more present on the PCB and the AM06 oscillation is now controlled by the remote. Problem is fixed. Thanks for your explanation, schematic and video. Great work

I have a 16 inch desk fan. It has no circuit board, a single shaded pole motor with a single coil. It has 3 speeds and oscillation control. It is over 10 years old, has been subject to all the usual knocks and bumps. It is usually on over 12 hours a day in the summer. It is whisper-quiet, works perfectly and the only maintenance I've had to do is give the cage and fan blades a wash every now and again. It cost £15 at Sainsbury's. The only thing it doesn't have is a Dyson £500 price tag dangling off it!

Agree, a lot less complicated, more reliable, and cheaper too! One of the best engineered products I've worked on was the kitchen aid mixer I looked at (video on here) it's 36 years old and like brand new still inside. I serviced it all and I'm sure it will last another 36 years..

The nylon sprockets are suitably robust (probably), you can't design against every possible kind of abuse.

this is the most comprehensive repair video of the dyson fan ever! Question: Would removing c51 capacitor solve the oscillating issue? I was thinking if its possible to add a physical switch on the wires to the oscillating motor solve the issue too? Im terrible at soldering!

Thanks Zal👍I'm not sure what you mean by R86 capacitor, as R would mean resistor C would be capacitor. You could add a switch if you desired but testing the capacitor I removed and if it's shorted, just removing it by cutting it in half or such would also work.

Really nice fix Mick, just 2 observations if I may... why did you not replace the shorted cap? Was it that you just couldn't find / have a repladement one as if it was a decoupling cap it would be needed, wouldn't it? and the second observation... that Andrex "Wind Sock" made me laugh out loud when I saw it fluttering away at the end there. Absolutely apt use of the toilet roll, very spot on and very funny too, it made me chuckle quite a bit 👍😂😂😂😂😂😂

I didn't have any so I just thought I'd remove it. My thinking was it's not like you keep switching the oscillation motor on and off every few minutes. You probably just either have it on or off.

From the mcu at pin 32, is that GPIO-Pin directly bound to a 10K Resistor at the base of that npn? Kinda seems quite high of a resistance for any fast straight switching, does it?

@@BuyitFixit Generally, yes, a low value. There's a ton of online info re selecting values, but you can waste the rest of your life trying to fully understand the maths.

I think that snubber network is to relief the stress on the TRIAC. Without it that MOC may fail sooner or later.

Yeah totally agree. I guess for how often you actually switch the oscillating on and off though it may well last as long as the rest of it.

@@BuyitFixit I think it totally depends on AC mains frequency. If it is 60Hz, there are 120 zero crossings per second. So the snubber absorb 120 stress occasions per second. That is one of the reasons that cap to fail. As a suggestion you can replace one of that 0 ohm resistor with a 10 ohm one. So it smoothen the RC time constant.

I sometimes consider picking up a spares / repairs Dyson Airblade for the bathroom instead of a hand towel. There's an original one on now but they're 1600W which is a lot considering they don't have a big heater

Here goes: I have tried using the non-genuine air filters for the Dyson tower fans (the cylindrical type filters) and while good quality, they offer too much resistance to the fan. Air is drawn around the sides causing a lot of noise. A shame as they're £15 each rather than £50 for genuine. i figured they used the high volume air instead of heating it.

I got a xiaomi fan that has large sound-optimized fanblades which has more airflow than these things at a much lower noise level. Oh and the build quality is really fantastic, unlike the plastic tat that is Dyson. I wish they'd up their build quality but alas, nearly all of their products have either shoddy plastic cases that break in the worst ways (cordless vacuums have the power switch in the battery, and a long flimsy plastic piece goes from the trigger to the battery switch, their hairdrier is made of extremely cheap and brittle plastic, etc) or have weird circuitry that's prone to fail, as you showed.

22:58 In the datasheet of the MOC3083M, I couldn't find a max current across the main terminals. The peak non-repetitive surge current in 1 A and the holding current 0.5 mA but I couldn't find the max continuous current . You say it's 100 mA, do you remember how they call it? Or if it was in a table or graph?

I'm pretty sure I saw it in the datasheet, but there might be a few different sheets from different manufacturers. It was a while back, but I do remember it saying that it shouldn't be used to drive loads directly.

I have a AM07 fan with a blown motherboard fuse.. I have no idea what the value of it is? Have you replaced the fuse before?

Unfortunately not. But I just did a quick search on the wattage on the AM07 and it's 65w. Assuming you are in the uk and we use 240v that would be 65/240=0.27Amps so I'd think a 1A fuse perhaps? I just checked in the video and on the schematic I drew on this fan, I wrote the value see 28:35 and it's 1.6A so I think it would be around the same. I would check for shorts before replacing the fuse as generally fuses blow for a reason.

Check if the motor rotates freely by hand. It could be jammed with debris or the bearings could be gone.

You know the sound when you first started and I kind of hear it when you are showing it at the end. Like the rubbing sound? I have that but on a higher level to the point where the motor cuts out because of the force against it. Can figure it out. Not sure if the fan is out of balance or something. Not sure.

When you are done cleaning and maintaining your fan, make sure all 4 torx bits that attaches to the fan housing are tight, not over tight but tight with a screwdriver or ratchet. If not the fan blades with rub with the fan housing causing friction and not great sounds and error codes. Also make sure the longer torx bits are tight as they also hold the fan housing in place also and I tightened them a bit at a time in a cross cross pattern to keep even distribution and balance. Hope this helped.

It's not a resistor you should be removing it's a capacitor! Check the small capacitors around that are to see if any are shorted or have a very low reading

I honestly can't tell you. The unit was non working when I bought it, and the only reference I have is after changing the motor. It's not really loud or anything, but I've got nothing to compare to previously.

No seems fine. I think it's a snubber capacitor to protect the triac driver from spikes. Seems to work ok without it. I only removed it because it was the cause of the fan oscillating constantly.

Does anyone know the right size circlip plier to buy for the circlip? (Or how to find the right size)? tried to buy a circlip plier to take apart the DP01 but found the tips are too big and don't fit in the holes of the circlip. It looks just like the circlip in the video but there's no comment as to the sizing.

I'd first disassemble it and see if there is any debris clogging the motor or fan (you'd need to do this anyway to change the motor) if it's not that then the bearings in the motor could have failed which would also make it noisy. Hope that helps 👍

One more question. You actually applied super glue on the contact between the nut and the fan top,is it really necessary?

The original had some loctite on it and I didn't have any at the time so used what I had. The manufacturers thought it was needed so I just followed suit.

Why was the fan melted to the housing at the beginning.... and what was the white stripe on it... as you said someone had been in already and glued that fan that which eventually melted to the housing and hence you thought it was siezed...

I suspect the air intakes might have gotten blocked causing poor airflow and causing the motor to overheat and melt.

If the opto-isolator can handle 100mA and the motor is pulling < 20mA I can't see the issue with using it like that. Nice fix... apart from using pliers to tighten a nut, you brute! :)

Yes in theory it should handle it, but in the data sheet it says it should not be used to drive a load directly

I'd love to have found out exactly what caused the main motor to fail. I checked KZbin after watching this video and lots of motor fail videos but everyone just replaced them. Usually these motors are bulletproof and thats why I'm so curious to know what design fault is causing this common failure.

I think the bearings failed and it overheated as it was melted inside

Sir, your motor assembly should have rubber mounts that position the assembly center in the unit. I wonder now if not having them was the cause of your motor bearings burning out. Thanks for the video!

I would have replaced that capacitor with a 0.1-10nf one and replace the 0 ohm resistors with a low value 10-100 ohms so the snubber works to avoid spurious triggers of the optoTRIAC(with AC line spikes) and the resistors reduce stress on the capacitor so it doesn't fail again.

Are you sure it's safe to just remove the capacitor for the oscillation motor? I have the same issue and will remove it as well but don't want it to become a fire hazard if I do? If not can you tell me what the capacitor is to replace it?

It wouldn't cause a fire. I don't know the exact value as there are no schematics and no markings on it, although you might be able to work it out from similar applications. It is there to protect the triac driver from spikes, so worst that could happen is that IC could eventually fail and the motor would oscillate by itself like what it is doing now.

@@BuyitFixit This is what I really dislike, these days, with these SMD caps. No markings and for many (most?) devices, difficult to impossible to get GOOD schematics with parts lists. Oh how I miss the old days when I was a TV Repair man and had my own full library of schematics for the most popular TVs for the time. The service manuals were robust, with well designed schematics, wave forms, all components marked, parts list and even some guides for known issues. Nowadays, that's rare. I have some schematics for "newer" stuff, where I could get them, and compare to the old goodies of days gone by, these leave much to be desired. Oh well. Now, if I have to replace and SMD cap, where there's no markings and no info on line, if I can find datasheets for whatever components they serve, then I can more or less figure out what the values might be. I just bought a bunch of misc. SMD caps (1206 size) and when time permits, I'm going to test each one (over 300 of the things) and put them in a boxall, marked correctly. Big job.

Totally agree. I remember as a kid pulling apart old TV's and sometimes they even had the schematic inside of the back of the set. A thing of the past it seems, yet we have more access to information? It seems a step forward and two steps backwards. I've noticed the SMD stuff like resistors as they have gotten smaller now have no markings too! Good luck with the capacitor sorting!👍

Totally agree, but it gets worse! I also bought a hot and cold version which is a later model. It hasn't got a nice bearing for the swivel now and just a plastic bush and they are using a motor driver chip (which failed catastrophically) instead of the h-bridge and mosfets.

@@BuyitFixit I just watched the other video of the hot and cold one . I agree with "G" , huge price for something built to fail using sub standard parts . When did something so simple become so complicated with a diagnostic port etc ? Fans and oscillating fans have been around for decades but now we have to have these over complicated things just because we have the parts and they call it progress

Dyson does for 'design' what myxomatosis does for rabbits... I bought a Pifco oscillating fan over 30 years ago, and it still works fine, despite a lot of use. I doubt anyone will say that about a Dyson.

I've not looked at one, if you have a test meter it should be easy to find as it will measure short circuit. It should be around the 8 pin chip where the oscillation motor plugs in.

@user-gd1iu6jd6i Definitely not! You'd probably short out a supply or something. Capacitors are commonly across a supply voltage (+ and - for instance) so you would be in effect shorting those together!

Not that it was the ultimate goal, but was the repair worth it financially? Is the cost of functional fan higher than the price of faulty fan + 2 new motors? Time not counting in as we consider it a pleasure 😊

Been a while since I did this one, I think the motors were around £10 and £5, plus the price of the fan and postage works out around £94. I've just looked on Ebay and a used unit ranges from around that to £200 although the odd one has sold for slightly cheaper. My wife was after one and you don't know what parts it needs before it arrives. It may have just needed a small part. It was still fun to do, and hopefully will help others repair theirs.

thank you sir for replying back when on cold it works fine but when it goes from 0 to 1 as from cold to hot it osilates for a while without any air but then it stops and shows an error code displayed e8

I've not had that fault before I did try a search on the internet but didn't find a lot. The fact that it works ok on cold, I'd think there's something possibly up with the temperature sensor, or it could be the small board that controls the heater or the heater itself. Might be worth cleaning it all out first, see if that makes and difference, and check the fan inside moves freely still just in case it's something to do with airflow.

Sorry for the late reply, I only just noticed it. There should be a little black thing on a wire (that's the temperature sensor). I'd just try cleaning everything first, and check that the motor spins freely.

Why are things so complicated now? Good old box fan - induction motor (simplest motor ever), switch and cord. Runs almost forever, only stops if bushing dries out. Little oil and on again for another 10 years!

@@BuyitFixit i just now got it apart. no error or f code. it says number 6 as its the fan speed ive had it. 6 displays for a sec or 2 then shuts off. but if i hurry to hit the ocilate button before the 2 sec. it will start to oscilate then shuts down. (fan blade doesnt turn on tho). ive taken the pcb out but havent tested electrical. was also thinkin maybe the fan blade might be stuck? was thinkin if theres a sensor that might be blocked or playing up but i cant seem to google if it has one. am11 model. i literally just bought this fan used in working condition from a neighbor not even a week ago lol. to me $50 was a steal. maybe this is why he sold it. but if it is why, why isnt it working intermittently.

@@BuyitFixit thats what i was figuring. ok so ive found the issue. it isnt the pcb. gotten the motor out. fans free but was sticky. i kept the fan apart but plugged the connections in and tried it. turn fan on it shuts off again. i spun the blade while turning it on and it works again. turned off. it turns on now without my help to finger the fan blade to spin. i think ill dab some 3in1 oil on the bearings and blow some dust out. i dont think its that though, it might just be the motor having a bad rotor vane. so i guess if it does this again ill have to source a motor. that was a quick reply man

Using the MOC for driving the motor is GOOD ENGINEERING! Not having that cap in is BAD ENGINEERING! ...unless you like having trouble down the line.
