Dyson are a pretty tricky company, they make some cool stuff, have really good advertising and branding and packaging, but as time goes on they use some mighty complicated little boards, wires that are routed in ways that do my head in. I have taken a part quite a few dyson vacuum cleaners, and reassembled even fewer. The older ones were tricky to work on but it was possible, the newer ones are painful. Apart from styling I wonder if they are any better. Henry is great for heavy sucking, G-tech make a pretty good sweeper vacuum cleaner. I'll stick to Dualit for my toasters. I don't know what my point is, but I can't see myself paying full whack for a dyson, not that I can see you doing that either! I put up a video today of a dremel repair. I thought it was the motor speed controller, but turned out to be a stator winding and a very easy repair. We will beat them! #righttorepair

Yeah I used to like Dyson stuff, but it seems they have gone down the route of cutting costs, and charging a fortune. I'll check out your Dremel video!

i disassemble at least 6 pcs dyson vacuum cleaners and do a deep cleaning. it is a pain esp, the suction head, so difficult to clean. the MOST stupid design in the world. chiNa copy and modify the suction area and make it easiler to clean.

Thanks for the warning - I just assumed that 99% of mains -> dc was properly isolated. I kind of check for the cut across the board that they normally put in to show what's isolated. I do very little repair stuff so good tip for novices. Mind you - the whole point of injecting voltage is to bypass the mains section of the board so I'd always have it disconnected at that point.
@BuyitFixit
@BuyitFixit 4 ай бұрын
Yes it's quite easy to get caught out. A 'rough' way to tell is that isolated supplies have a transformer of some type.

Well done, conscientious repair. Sad to see these products fail in such spectacular ways (multiple components damaged) and even sadder for Dyson and many other manufacturers who are using cheap-as-possible manufacturing in order to maximise profits (which, of course, results in short operational lifetimes).

Thanks Ralph. Totally agree the quality on this isn't as good as the original cool fan I looked at. That one had a proper bearing and metal shaft that it rotated on where as this is just plastic with a plastic bush. Also using the motor driver chip instead of discrete components on the other fan. All to cut costs I presume ☹

Something else you can check on PCBs with microcontrollers. If the controller has an external crystal (oscillator), check with an oscilloscope that it's actually oscillating (has started). If it was damaged, isn't receiving start power, caps have shorted, etc. the microcontroller won't run. If the crystal or surrounding circuitry (typically fairly basic) are the problem, you may be able to replace them and get the controller to start again. Not saying it's common. Just something else to throw in your bag of tricks.

So in case you haven't noticed yet the Ground of the Diodes are marked on the silkscreen with a wider white area.. Love your Videos I thought I would point that out incase you didn't see it on the PCB. There are other markings that can show the Ground band side however on that PCB you were working with when you were testing the Diodes I was like turn the Probes around when I seen you had the red on the side with the wider white line area. Again thanks for all that you do it helps me give my friends someone to share your videos with so I don't have to make repair videos.

Thanks Revo, yes I know about the white stripes on the diodes and pcb indicate the negative, I've just always checked them in both directions. I think I possibly had one once that had leakage in the opposite direction once as opposed to being fully shorted. Thanks for the nice comments. I'm not an expert but I've fixed stuff for years just not on KZbin until about a year ago 🙂👍

Great video. Trying to fix an AM06 which is dead. Very similar pcb though the layout is different, I’ve put the two cap discharge resistors bback that have obviously been ‘removed’ by production engineering to save a few pennies. The inductor on the 5v? power supply has burnt out - not sure why yet.

9:57 But his power supply was isolated from mains (on the power supply), wasn't it? Or is the PSU's ground connected to earth? I get what you say after, in the case of the scope, you'd trip your GFCI. Or worse. But the PSU, though, I don't get it, unless the PSU's ground connected to the earth but why do they do that?

Brilliantly undertaken, excellently fixed, you’re very methodical makes a great video too, keep up the good work. (here’s a laugh for you) well I did something stupid I was fixing a Samsung Tv ( that’s what I do ) and I suspected caps on the power supply, I heated up each cap in turn with a soldering iron, until I touched the top of a cap on the hot side, my god I nearly chit my pants sparks flew and what a bang…. All the electric went, it took out the boards fuse, I measured it and it was on the reservoir caps side so 330v down to earth through the soldering iron lol

Unfortunately it seems all Dyson equipment, our bad experience was with a "Tornado vacuum" of theirs that clogged so easily (was only good for dust nothing else, dirt, forget it clogged right up). Dyson is over engineered, way over priced and performs abysmally after just a short time. The fact they use a component to direct drive to the motor instead of driving a relay or triac screams rip off. Never a Dyson product will inter my home again. They are over engineered under performing very poor value for the extreme price point the name demands.

I have no faith in Dyson products. They are way over priced for an okay product, but not something I would waste my money on. James Dyson has been steering operations towards Asia for a long time. Back in 2002, he shifted all manufacturing from Britain to Malaysia. Dyson has plants in Singapore, China and in the Philippines. While I understand the need for lower production costs, I'd say he cannot call his products British made. You need to maintain 50% of production in the country of origin to be able to say it is made in that country. From what I've been reading and finding out, not even 40% of Dyson is produced in Britain.

Unfortunately a lot of products these days lack in quality. I bought a kitchen aid food mixer a few months back and did a video on fixing a few minor issues and did a full strip down and rebuild. It's built like a tank and in really good condition, and it's 36 years old! I doubt you would even get anywhere near a mixer lasting 36 years these days..
