I guess my only gripe with "ek-zees" monster is that overtime they went from "this is what my deck is made to summon" to "if you play monsters, you can play XYZ's." Not that that's a bad thing, it's just something that doesn't really apply to other summonig conditions, maybe save links, that sorta made XYZ's too splash able

I don't like it when Konami removes some aspects or mechanics from a card. In this case, it's level. It may create something like the effect of Qli monsters: "it is unaffected by activated effects from any monster whose original *Level/Rank* is lower than this card's current Level" Oh hey, Link monsters don't have level/rank.

Autobot Starscream Good. Gravity bind grinds perfectly fun games to a fucking halt because your opponent insisted on making you draw a fucking MST just to have you finish the game. People that played three of them genuinely deserved lynching. It literally does nothing but slow the game to a crawl. And sadly it's now relevant again thanks to Pendulums and Pot of Desires making it actually possible to deck out thanks to Gravity Bind and Bunnilla spam.

I was a senior in high school when I heard about XYZ monsters coming out and was just getting used to using Synchros (I didn't start playing again till early 2011 but watched 5D's when it was out so it wasn't anything new). I thought the XYZ monsters were gonna be dumb just because of the whole stars on the opposite side and now almost every deck I use has at least one. Can't believe it's already been six years since then and now I have to get used to link and pendulum monsters when I ever I buy a pack.

Sure, the core idea of column positioning and affecting monsters the link markers point to is a cool idea, but did Komoney really have to limit the *entire* damn extra deck? And furthermore, Links don't possess Levels *or* Ranks, making them completely insusceptible to Leveling effects; not to mention their lack of defense points, giving them an actually incredible boost of power, even more than they already have.

I think another thing Konami got better at with this mechanics is skill expression. Synchros are kind of straightforward, they are stil a lot like Fusion monsters in a way because the challenging or skill expressive part of playing the monster is getting it on the field and after that, do whatever. With XYZ or Link Monsters, getting them on the field is almost too easy, but the timing of their summon and effect usage as well as their positioning (atleast with Link Monsters) has a lot more nuance and can be played around with a lot more than was the case for synchros. Example: You play Hieratics and just made Atum out of Wattail and Su. Now you got a decision to make if you wanna use its effect: Do you want to detach the Wattail, giving you atleast 1 guranteed +1 with another Hieratic effect in case you drew into your other copies of Wattail or they got banished or whatever, or do you wanna detach the Su and maybe set up for Ptolemy M7 or REDMD, allowing you to get the Hieratic back into your hand or on the field later on to continue your combo. These decisions are pretty small scale but they make a difference in the long run and i think thats super cool, because it makes you think about your plays a lot more than Synchros usually do, and that only got more prevalent with Links, where the positioning of your monsters on the field is also relevant for your combo and its a lot easier to block your own combos if you dont think enough about what youre doing.

I think the problem I still have with links over every other new mechanics is this. XYZs and synchros didn't prevent other mechanics from working. sure they power crept older stuff out of the game but there was no XYZs ruling that prevented synchro spam for example.

Xyz really marked a turn in the game, and one for the worse IMO. Prior to Xyz, most decks still had their heavy lifting done by, well, the deck. Extra deck monsters were used for their utility or a boss monster; very few decks focused purely on churning out an endless wave of Synchro monsters. But as Xyz monsters grew, those roles flipped. Many meta decks started to become about how many Extra monsters you could crap out in one turn, with your main deck largely just becoming a toolbox to facilitate this. And this trend continued on into Link monsters, arguably becoming even worse.

anyone else ever played the quillbolt xyz cannon soldier ftk deck? cuz damn that deck was stupid, lol. summon a tuner like quickdraw synchron, get two quillbolt in grave, summon cannon soldier, use the quillbolt for 15 rank 2 xyz monsters that you tribute for cannon soldier, then tribute any of your remaining monsters for the last 500 burn damage. as for the point of non level 8 synchros not really popping up that often, i think it's at least partly due to the fact that almost every monster that are even remotely decent are level 4. because of the popularity and power level of rank 4 xyz, most monsters and themes were built around assembling multiple level four monsters with ease. then you look at all the relevant tuners. the only tuner that's regularly used for synchro summons that i can think of currently, is raiden. and you generally make minerva first in lightsworn, not a synchro monster. so even when something is actually designed for synchro summons, it gets used for xyz more, lol. kind of makes me want a legitimate attempt at a modern synchro deck again, since we basically got yang zings, crystrons, and psy-frames. and only one of those has been even remotely good outside a few regional tops, and it was because of dinosaurs that yang zing were actually a legitimate tier one threat. yeah, there were other themes like superheavy samurai and speedroids, but they either weren't viable at all, too damn gimmicky, or were used to spam xyz monsters again, not synchro monsters. i'm all for versatility in cards, but when one option is just infinitely better than the other options, and when a card(s) is just infinitely better in any deck that isn't it's own theme, i feel like konami needs to reevaluate their design philosophy a bit.

You know, I haven't had yugioh cards in like almost 15 years....but learning about these cards makes me realize that the creators are interested in making more money by making mechanics that you can't afford to go without if you want to be evenly slightly competitive with other local players.....it's too bad that they created cards that were REQUIRED to be competitive. I have no problem with creating good cards snd new mechanics....but if you don't keep the cards balanced against the old cards just so people keep buying the new sets then that's just not right...... ....really there shouldn't be a "ban" list and a "limited" or semi-limited list....the game should have just been balanced..... ....the old cards had strong cards but now a lot of those strong cards are banned or limited.....it just seems like you wouod have the most balance if you adhered to what yugioh is all about: rare and powerful cards that only a few people in the world are willing to sacrifice everythi g that it takes to aquire and become the true King of Games! (At least that's what I imagined yugioh would grow into when I was younger: a game where some cards were so rare that onlya handful of people would and should ever possess them! If there were no banned cards then the game would br WAY more competitive, the old cards would be WAY more valuable, and all the decks would look different.
