Would love to see comparisons between the DZO Vespids, Meike FF primes, and Irix Cine Primes.

Add in the SLR Magic Microprimes as well😉

Vepids have the most character out of the bunch. They got CA, but it's a the vain of what you'd see from Anamorphic lenses. They're a good mix of old and modern lenses. The irixes are the fastest, but have annoyingly stiff focus Rings which will piss you off on set. Slr magics have some decent character too, and they have a very unique lens flare to them. Price wise it's the Meike, but they don't have the character of the others and have a lot of CA, but it's the kind that come off more distracting than anything. To sum it up. If you want clinical, go irix. Want creative, go vespid or slr. Want cheap, go Meike.

I've been waiting to hear some more opinions on the set, love your review! One thing that I find interesting is the CA looks more pleasant than lets say a gen 1 Rokinon Cine Prime. I think this in combination with the dzo zooms will be a super versatile for corporate, with primes for interviews and zooms for the frantic acquisition of b-roll
@mattdawgpro4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree, that CA is actually pretty bearable compared to a lot of other lenses.
@TheLostKuma4 жыл бұрын
@@mattdawgpro Meike seems to have controlled it much better by choosing to go bigger/heavier glass elements. Their set is rounding out pretty soon.
@mattdawgpro4 жыл бұрын
@@TheLostKuma I'll be interested to see those, I prefer less clinical lenses with some character, so hopefully the Meike stuff doesn't feel too much like an SLR lens.
@TheLostKuma4 жыл бұрын
@@mattdawgpro Yeah I'm with you. I love the way pictors render. and i like these vespids. i agree its not as bad as alot of lenses but was expecting a bit better since they've been advertising vespids as apochromatic. So far liking what i see form meike but not sure its worth teh extra weight/size... (though its cheaper too).

I actually really like the look, I have my stills glass if I want something "perfect". Don't mind the distortion and glad that they have limited breathing. Also love that they have 77mm filter threads and are not incredibly heavy. For a note on the video, wish you had shot these on a full frame sensor outside and not on the Komodo. Looking to get the 25mm and 75mm down the line.

Damn if it wasn't for such bad CA, wouldve been a great set!

Yup on charts every lens look worst than they are. In the intro video shot with these lenses I haven't noticed any massive amount of CA.
@Dad326464 жыл бұрын
You can see it closer to corners, esp if objects in focus. Probably not a biggie if you shoot in 1080. Bu at 4k and up - this aint it chief. Price is great tho. And muuuch better than rokinons or probably xeens. I think its good as a first set of primes
@polyyu86754 жыл бұрын

Because of the CA and distortion, would you say these would have similar performance as rehoused vintage stills glass like Leica - R, Contax Zeiss, and Canon FD, or worse?

My question too.I was really looking forward to these as I wanted the vintage characteristics of my contax zeiss and Leica R without the CA...

What is "cutting" when referring to the lens characteristics around 4:35 minute mark? Not familiar with this -- British term? I've been in the industry near 11 years (7 + in LA) and I'm baffled by what he means. Is it distortion or possibly the not so nice roundness of the bokeh?
@NitroColaSSC3 жыл бұрын
Never heard of the term! Would love to know too
@adamgoldstein613 жыл бұрын
Based on both this video and Gerald Undone’s review of these lenses, I *think* "cutting" refers to the way the bokeh circles toward the edge of the frame get cut off along one side. So not just the somewhat jagged edges of the circle where you can kind of make out the shape of the iris blades, but the way that the farther from center frame you get, the more the circles resemble a gibbous moon (for lack of a more technical description). Can’t speak with authority, but such is my surmise.

@cvp Can you please tell me what PL adapter you're using for these lenses? I've rented them twice (as well as the Meike FF) in PL, and they would NOT seat into the Wooden Camera PL mount on our EVA1, nor would they work in a Metabones PL or an 8SINN PL adapter. Please advise? The Meike's would not seat either, for the record.Thanks in advance for any info

Thank you for your great videos. Everything is very on point, organized and without fuzz. Great informations :) I am currently looking into more serious filming (coming from professionall wedding and business photography) and i have to say i find it hard to choose a set of cine lenses. from modern canon/sony/sigma art primes one can expect great images, low CA and good flare resistence. if i dont need the depth of field i can basically shoot everything wide open with all my lenses and do not have to worry about image quality. i like that modern look for filming as well, if i want some character i can add filters later. sadly, none of the affordable cine lenses seem optically on par with current photography glass. as much as i would like the cine housing, long focus throw etc i find it hard to shell out money for lesser optical quality. i guess i will stick to the photo lenses a bit longer.

It’s pretty expensive but the sigma cine primes use the same glass as in the art series

Best conclusion for the current market. I am currently a student at the film academy, thinking about doing some rental business, feeling that the low-quality glass with a cine-cover would make it just so expensive. For my FX series camera, the same price can come with great G master lenses, even with incredible image quality. Really hard to make the decisions.

Cropping always shows the best of a lens. Sometimes though, its the edges that give the character, ie. vignetting and softness, great for center framing.

Wow that CA! I thought these were supposed to be apochromatic design. Also the bokeh doesn’t look that attractive to me, was expecting something much smoother and less edgy looking given the 16 blades . Otherwise looks great and I like the rendering!
