Out of interest, what do you think caused the forend to break so cleanly? Had the finish dried out so much that it dried to a point of being brittle? Plus some direct force impact?

This is not DU. In the early 80s there were 500 Mallard guns,500 Black ducks and 500 Pintail superposed guns. All were made at FN.
