I really like how you do the flight review section first!! For us impatient people this helps a lot!! And you are really thorough with all the details as well! Kudos to the camera lady as well!! this is one of my fave planes of all time... yes I said it! I don't care what size!! This thing is amazing!! I have flown it in 20mph winds with no issues, smacked into a chain link fence full speed and with my 950mah pack get insane speeds with almost 20 min flight times!! I normally dislike UMX planes because of the material they are made out of but not this one!! I have a light kit on the way soon as well. So much fun!!!

Twin engine + variable thrust = the best configuration for winged RC. Two props churning air seem to make planes more stable and controllable. Variable thrust allows for tighter turns at very low airspeed. A plane like this with 2S power and Betaflight on the flight controller would be the ultimate.

Just got out to fly mine this morning!! WOW, what a great plane! Best $100+ bucks I have EVER spent in this hobby!!! My 1st LIPO I ever bought was 1500 MAH 3S pack. It was 80 bucks!!!! And very low C rating!! What a POS!! LOL!! Love this plane, the brushless motors are awesome. I gotta get some bigger MAH PACKS!!!!

Here I am just back from the field and I would like to say that I love this little plane (after the conscendo)....the only defect I found in it is the insurance we take to fly it and the fragility of its propellers.......Insurance, because precisely, with its electronics to the point, we think we are the king and we quickly do stupid things that lead us to the fatal accident (it is very solid). I love my little plane, it's expensive, but I understand why. Thank you Brian, thank you Horizon Hobby......

Without the lights you are seriously missing out. I just got this and the lights make it so neat. I don't know if someone more skilled would be able to keep track of orientation in the dark (I was having a hard time) but if you keep it in safe mode you can still fly around at night and put it into some fun spins. I was prepared to be underwhelmed but it looks very very cool. During the day I think I need to keep it in the low rates too as a beginner and even then it's easy to pull out of something and have done a whole loop and head back to the ground before you realize what's going on. The yaw though seems good only for tiny adjustments or setting a spin though and isn't enough to actually make it turn much.

FYI: Spektrum has the SPM radio file for download on their website specifically for the Ultrix with all the settings correct. Makes it super easy to setup and bind the radio. If you install the LED kit (which I did), just follow the additional information in the manual to control the LED light sequence. Easy, Peasy. Note: You do have to change the picture to the better one that Brian used (best looking IHMO). I also use the 1S 800mA Spektrum battery (2) and charge it at 2A. If you are installing the LEDs, take a look at several YT videos on how to do it as there is no instructions on how to do it. Took me about 30 mins and was no issue.

At ~11:00, you mentioned being confused by prop drag. You are not alone. The drag from a spinning prop is hard for a lot of people to get their heads around. I'm actually an Aerospace Engineer, so I can help you out a little here. Think about it like this. When a propeller is spinning, the air around it "sees" it as a solid disk mad up of the full area being swept over by the blades. As the disk moves through the air, it will build up pressure like a snow plow moving through a parking lot. When the propeller has its brake engaged, the air only sees the area of the blades themselves plowing through, so that forward pressure has less area to push back against, so the plane feels less drag. Random side note, propeller actually make this type of drag all the time they are spinning, even when they are producing thrust. You just don't feel it because the drag is offset by the thrust... at least at lower flight speeds.

Yep - Very interesting aerodynamic effect, and something that has to be "Seen" to believe ;) I learned about this from when I started flying sail planes. Huge impact, tractoring props, will have on a sail plane...that's why a brushed motor on a sail plane is a waste of time...

Brushless motors... I like that. I'm done with brushed motors. I've had nothing but bad luck with them both in my RC Trucks and more recently in my planes as I've started into the flying segment of the RC hobby .I've probably spent as much time fixing as I have flying my Sport Cub S.

Sorry to hear that, but fixing RC planes is a way of life - LOL ;) I'd be lying if I told you any differently. Fortunately, the brushless motors are not going to be a huge maintenance point.

Horizon replaced 4-5 motors under warranty before I finally wised up and upgraded to a mild brushless motor and ESC combo. ~ $45.00 combo off Amazon. Haven't had a motor or ESC issue in about two years. Also, got a bit of a performance boost over the brushed setup.

At 37:40, what's happening is that they want channel 5 using D/R and Mode simultaneously on switch (B). ex: Switch B assigned position 0 SAFE 100/0, position 1 LOW 70/30, position 2 HIGH 100/40. Plus, Brian in this video you didn't test out the differential thrust. With SAFE of, at a good height throw the rudder full right or left at full throttle and you'll be in an effortless pinwheel or spinning pizza box.

I already bought a 2s brushless motor and a new control board for when this brushed motor dies. Wish I'd known about that 1s motor before. The new camera format is cutting off the top of the video as I'm sure you already know. I kept trying to look up to see more. I'll bet the camera crew could record a mosquito in flight, she's that good! Not going to order that plane as I have too many already and three I haven't flown yet and two more on the way. Great audio Good questions from the camera crew The instructions that came with your wind sock should tell you how to tell wind speed. If it is one quarter horizontal the speed is something and half something else and full horizontal something else. When in the air it looks like an SR-71.

For all you guys having issues with binding this plane to an older Spektrum transmitter, the secret is you have to change your frame rate from 22s to 11s, I tried 12 times to bind it and then doing a simple google search solved the problem.

Brian on your spectrum s2100 when you charged the 800mah is the correct setting .8 I'm trying to explain this to my elderly Father who taught me how to fly all types of r/c planes back in the early 80's and he doesn't understand how lipo's chargers work and at this time I don't have the s2100 charger to show him please reply in layman terms so he can read what you say. In laymen terms, charge a lipo at the size of pack...if it's a 1500mAh, charge at 1.5amps...if it's 6000mAh, charge at 6 amps. If it's 300mah, charge it at 0.3 amps ;)

Just gotta keep trying. Step back a little and see if that helps...sometimes TOO close will cause issues. Other than that, I'm not sure what you can try??? Make sure you're not in DSM2 mode???

Funny you make this comment now, since we've been experiencing some trouble with mine lately...and we're not 100% sure what's causing the noise....it doesn't seem like it's picking up rustling of the shirt, but more some sort of interference. We've also been told to run the cell phone in AIRPLANE mode to limit other applications causing noises when the phone is processing other activities....so we do that too, but still trying to track down the issue. Other than that, a pretty huge improvement in audio over no lav mics. It does take longer, but it's worth while.

This is from the new lapel mics. We believe it happens with interference from the Cell Phone we're using to capture the video. We have since been trying to put the Cell Phone into Airplane mode and that seems to help. We forgot on the latest video, and noises are back :)

Brian, do you know the part # of the that JST to IC3 connector that you have? I own the S2100 smart charger and want to buy those conversion connectors, to charge these battery's on my S2100 charger. If you fly this, and you're having no difficulty, an EDF jet would be on par...if it's a well behaved jet. Keep in mind, an EDF takes some time to generate thrust, so the latency between throttle demand, and throttle output is a bit part of the difficulty with EDF jets, but it's very manageable with a good, solid EDF like these... Hummmm, I don't think I would, since it's not going to give you access to controlling the SAFE, but if you had a DX6e, you could for sure. I wonder if you got a RTF package with a DXe, you might be able to make that work??? This was kinda what I did as a stop gap measure when I went from the Sport Cub S UMX to the next few planes...I bought the DELTA RAY RTF and used the DX4i to fly my next three or four planes. I scored a DX8 for cheap, used, and loved it till the day I couldn't resist the DX18...I have NEVER regretted my DX18, or the DX8 for that matter. One of the best RC decisions I've ever made.

Gday mate how are you I enjoyed your video. I heard you say you like a plane that flies like a plane rather than a vtol. I'm keen for you to fly the xk 520 cause it's like a plane with a vtol capability I've been learning to fly and I was hope you could give me your opinion on how I must be progressing but I've only flown the 520. It flies similar to this one but the 520 is a wee bit bigger. I was just outside flying and there a bit of a track I was able to use as a runway. So I was doing some wheels up wheels down practice, and you know what I was taxi'ing around on the rough dirt this xk 520 does it all. Ive been checking out approaches to land so that when I get my Draco.... When I first started flying here I felt I was not good enough for the type of geography I have here but I tell you now I've been flying around here I'm getting more and more confident and I tell you what I've come to learn that this area I have is perfect for planes like Draco and the carbon cubs and the stol type planes. But I really need to get on the simulator ( I don't have one yet) cause I'm flying a lot on stability and auto level and stuff I can switch between stbilaty and no stability but I have to save my self all the time with a flick of the switch. Anyways I just wanted to share. And can I ask you a question? How many planes must you have surely you can't keep all the planes you review. You would need a warehouse.. Lol oh oh and by the way I've got a great idea for your channel subscriber special all the way from Australia. I've got stol playground, and a great slope for gliding and with the way I see the wind working this is a perfect DS location yeah so maybe pack a couple of planes and head out on location for the subscriber special.. Fly with SAFE and AS3X as long as it takes. You'll get there eventually. It just takes time. You can do it. I love slope soaring, but hard to find a place that's good, clear laminar wind, into a hill around here :(...

I want to control LIPO‘s voltage but I am not sure which voltage I should set to start radio‘s alarm? 3.3 Volt or better 3.5? (I am using the same Spectrum LIPO you recommended). About 5 years flying RC planes. I've been into RC on and off most of my life, and I'm a technical kinda guy (like most RC enthusiasts) The plane is very fun! BUT not a first plane, despite the look of a "beginner plane" it's really not. This plane would be a good 3rd or 4th plane, and it is a BLAST! Hope to draw you in! It's worth the time investment, but it turns into a bit of a lifestyle, if you're anything like me. Hope you stick around, and get caught up - we have thousands of videos! Hi Brian. Thanks for the video. I bought the Ultrix in Germany and I use the Same Lipo (800mAh 1S Lipo). Charging on the Spektrum smart charger (SPEKTRUM SMART S1100) with the IC3 Device to JST Device (SPMXCA310). Adjustment Lipo - 1S - 0.8A will cause Charging with 1.7A instead iof 0.8A... Is it the same with yours ??? Best regards from Germany Ralf

If you want to charge at a higher than 1C rate, you should be fine to do so, but it's not listed on this pack...so do it at your own risk. I generally charge at 0.8 amps, for a 800mAh 1S pack. I suspect from past experience, you could charge a quality 1S pack at 2C to 3C (or upwards of 2.4amps)...but if you're concerned, just charge at 0.8 Amps .

Camera crew does an excellent job tracking the Ultrix in flight. I can't. That's my concern because it has a swept wing and is so small and white like the clouds. LOL too small and too white for comfort? Does that make sense?

I think you can just setup two of the modes you want most with your two position stick. The DR&Expo drive these flight modes if I recall. You're gonna have to play with it

Brian I have got the dx6i setup to work safe mode and high rate AS3X on one of the 2 position switches then mixed in low rates on another switch giving me all that I need so I'm happy with it now. 👍🏻
