My Radian came in last night (ordered it here) and I followed your instructions on binding, etc. Very exciting, thanks! I went to take it to a little baseball field but it was occupied so I took it to the hills. Around the SF Bay Area is a mini mountain range that goes all the way around the bay. I immediately began hitting thermals and got it so high that I couldn't tell which way it was pointed. I had to keep giving it lots of down elevator to get it down closer. The wind was strong and I know you warned us but plane is very stable with the as3x and safe and all. It only bounced around a little in the turbulent airflow from some distant eucalyptus trees well off to my left but I felt I was always in control of it. With all the thermals I was able to fly the whole time (1-1/2 to 2 hours) on one battery. I should mention I had a kit built sailplane from '80s but it's been a while. I might have to look into the bigger Radians!

Thanks so much Jeff! As for this being a great indoor candidate...keep in mind, it's 3 channel...not that this is any type of deal breaker, but when flying a 3 channel, you'll have some limits on how steep you can turn, which comes in very handy indoors ;) As for a great recommendation for indoors - Sport Cub S2 UMX | bit.ly/3yYkrUs | bit.ly/3PL8vfJ - which is still a great choice from yesteryear, as it's one of the planes that helped me to learn to fly. Keep in mind, tight spaces call for MORE control authority, if you want the best experience. You'll find out quickly, steel support beams and basketball nets love to sneak up!!!

The old UMX radian was one of the most fun planes I’ve ever owned. Flew it almost every day for more than two years, averaging 15+ minute flights on single batteries. Even with the coastal breeze and salt water in the air, it held up until finally the elevator control horn broke and it lawn darted.

We have a half dozen of these at our field and it is one of the most fun planes to fly, very relaxing. I do disagree with you a bit about wind - we fly these to 15 mph winds (horizontal sock) and with those winds Safe is tremendous then, the equivalent to taking away 5-8 mph of wind. Also, I have found it flies most stable with about 10% throttle which will last us 10 mins without much risk. Catch it on the nose or wing root. Grass landings are about 1” (as opposed to the Crescendo which takes 100+ feet on close cut lawn). Great fun - first plane I fly at every outing for fun and confidence. I agree that it may be a bit sensitive as a first plane, particularly with its slow acceleration. Last Sunday I gave the controls with the plane in the air in Safe, to someone who had simulator time only. He did fine, not very smooth, but under control.

If we had more laminar, clean wind, I agree, but ours was very confused / variable...which is no fun for a small plane ;( Hoping for some clean wind so I can slope this little bird off a ditch somewhere ;)

Had not flown in years and wanted an excellent practice plane before I flew my 2 meter sailplsnes so I picked one up. Not disappointed at all. It still is a great plane and I can fly it in the 5 acre field just outside my back door. The 2 meter plsne needs 30 acres to be comfortable flying it. I normally fly mine in the early morning or late evening when wind is at minimum and I'd guess anything under 8mph for wind it will handle well, but no wind is pure delight....

By the way, I did follow your hint of mixing rudder to aileron and noticed that if you throw both, you increase the throw of the rudder from 100 to about 115 or a bit more. An interesting phenomenon.
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
Might want to mix a touch less, since these little linear servos have a history of failure for a variety of reasons, not the least of which from "over-driving", which is regrettably accomplished with as little as +/-100% (yeah, I know....shouldn't be an issue, but I've heard too many times that this can happen...) - I usually recommend about +/-95 to 98% if one wants to really avoid this issue.

I've already bought several E-Flite planes but starting on the basics again.... trainer, gliders, etc. My question is this.... regarding the UMX Radian, can I change the orientation for the left stick rudder on this plane...to the right stick as though it were an aileron? Nice Informarive demo- wing mounting is permanent- sort of fiddley to screw wing to fuselage I reinforced my wing to body with tape. If wing detached for transport it would be great for traveling, this is level. 2 I think, careful of flying high, especially if mild wind, this plane will fly too far away, plane dives very fast like a sport plane, I use my older dxe transmitter and new batman telemetry controllers, my dx6 I'm learning to program, FYI. Rudder control is little different with yaw turning, but old school classic performance, I like transmitter compatibility with spectrum, horizon hobby support is fast, I rejoined ama though I'm a park flyer these days, enjoy,

Hi Brian, I am wondering about this plane as an affordable way to practice slope-soaring, with the stakes being lower if I crash. Do you think that would work as long as the winds aren't too strong? Why could thermaling result in a flyaway? Is the motor not strong enough to bring it back?

This plane is super light. I don't think it handles the wind as well as other bigger offerings, but I've heard many guys saying they do +10MPH, and I just don't hardly believe it...but not just one guy...a bunch of them! I put this together with my grandson and bound it to my dx9 but find everytime I replace the flight battery I need to rebind again? Is this normal or is there something I haven't done?
@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
It's NOT normal. Do me a favor. Try power cycling the transmitter right after binding, then power down the plane, and go right back to it...start like normal this time... 1) Power on Tx, and make sure you have the model selected... 2) Power up the plane, and REST it so it's leaning on the wing (NOT LEVEL - I know - stupid, right!?!??) If it stays bound only a few minutes later, but not 3 days later, might want to talk to HH tech support....maybe you have an issue on the Rx or on your Tx. If it's OTHER PLANES too, I had a guy I was helping a bunch with a plane and he never power cycled the Tx after making the model, and going in to BINDing it...I always do it as a matter of habit, but not based on instrucitons from HH or anywhere really...I think THIS process is why he was "loosing" his binds. This was with a PNF (rebuild from crash) Viper 70mm, fyi...so it was an AR637T Now that you mention it, I too have experienced this before, but it's isolated to UMX planes that haven't been flown in a long time. It's such a quick thing to re-bind them that I don't really give it a second thought...possibly a firmware issue we've uncovered here??? Either way, hope these steps help you to make an informed decision as to weather or not to involve HH Tech support.

@BrianPhillipsRC3 жыл бұрын
Yes, Forward Programming is how the Transmitter Teaches the Receiver the wing type and what channels to assign to what control surfaces. So much easier than past setups. As for the AR631 - this is one of my first choices, now-a-days, since the AR637T is QUITE a bit more....and for me, for Vario and Pack voltage, not usually worth the premium. I've been telling my contacts at HH that we want pack voltage on ALL telemetry equipped Rx'es.

Good video! I've had the first edition of this plane for a while now. I am going to disagree with you on one thing. Wind. I think it flies fine in 5-10. Afterall, it is a sailplane. It's almost pointless to fly in dead air because all it's going to do is drop to the ground...OR.....you're going to be on the throttle the whole flight....which is also kind of pointless for a sailplane. The idea is to take it up to the furthest line of sight altitude you can reach (for me that's surprisingly been in the ballpark of 300 feet) and let it glide. And thermals? Rode many of them with this little guy and never lost it. Though ....you do need to know a little bit about what you are doing if you are going to thermal ANYTHING (big or small) because getting out of them is the most critical thing about thermals. That's my opinion (based on my own experience). In fairness.....I also realize....you're talking to a lot of beginners on this channel so you really do need to be cautious about recommending wind and thermals for a little plane like this. Buuuuut IF you know what you're doing, wind and thermals are a breeze with this thing (pun intended 😉 ). Again, great video! Happy landings, my friend and fellow RC KZbinr. 😀

@@BrianPhillipsRC Yeah, and I figured you were aiming the "avoid wind and thermals" to the newer pilots. So in fairness, we are probably more in agreement than I gave us credit for. I enjoy your videos by the way. Liked and subbed. Hope you will return the favor.

Camera crew l👀ked terrified she was gonna crash the plane! 2 of my FMS planes, (explorer and super ez) flies much better AFTER they crashed! 😜 Ive come to the conclusion that 50% of FMS planes NEEDS to be hard landed, at least, to fly correctly! 😁

Super easy wasn't the planes' fault. Crappy off brand, amazon, dsm (1!) Reciever! Switched to the OrangeRx & solved it!

Can you set up an agreement and link to a Canadian RC supplier for us isolated northerners? I’d happily order through you to support your channel but import costs currently make it uneconomical for us.

You can from here - Tower bit.ly/2XqHt45 - but I don't know of any other distribution channels to reach out too...do you have a recommendation?

I have bought more than a few, and love them all! I also have Jumper and just didn't like the menus... I'd like to try a Radio Master and see how it works.

First to say Kudos fo another informative video! Disappointed in the brushed motor. I’ll pass on this one.

Don't blame you. I think brushless motors are expected from premium brands like Eflite.

@@BrianPhillipsRC The brushed motor will last for hundreds of flights on this model! Most people crash or retire this model before the motor wears out...brushless would have added to the cost ($20-$30) and weight...and is absolutely not necessary for this model :)
