Is Eonwe your favourite Maiar? Or do you guys have some other favorite? - For some reason, the first time I had read the Silmarillion, I always assumed Eonwe was a woman based on his name, and I only realized my mistake after my second reading of the Silmarillion 😂. Sorry about that Eonwe, this video is my way of making it up to you! As always guys, subtitles are available, and feedback is welcome!

Eonwe is pretty cool, but I think Osse is up there next to him for me. I love how Osse has mood swings and likes to cause chaos, yet absolutely adores the Teleri elves and their singing. The only time I don't like him is when he unnecessarily kills the friends of Voronwe and tries to kill Voronwe too when they were trying to return home. Thankfully Ulmo spared Voronwe who is one of my favorite elves. So glad Voronwe also survived the fall of Gondolin later.

Leading them was Ingwion, prince of all the Elves, son of Ingwë, and at his side was Finarfin, High-King of the Noldor, third son of Finwë, leading the remnants of the Noldor a.k.a the deep elves, that didn't follow the foolish Feanor or the honourable Fingolfin to ME. I personally love the thought of Ulmo taking part in the war and kicking Morgoth's putrid ass. He, after all, was the one who loved ALL of the Children, not just the Elves, equally and was the only one who actively fought for them during the First Age even when all other Valar decided they'd rather hide in Valinor. The fact that Beleriand was rended completely and sunk into the sea definitely sounds like some of the Valar had their hands in it. Especially Ulmo, who I imagine took Beleriand into his bosom in the end so it could finally heal from its marring.

Although the Valar were not capable of producing children, the Maiar are able to do so right? This is evident when Melian, a Maiar, married Thingol and gave birth to Luthien. So is it possible if some of the other Maiar in Arda were born during the ages of Middle-Earth instead of having already existed since the beginning of time?
@Crafty_Spirit2 жыл бұрын
If you look at how the union of Thingol and Melian came about... it seems like divine intervention, a once in the universe's lifetime event. (Unless Radagast sired the Beornings by having an affair with a Northwoman)
@ellerj6412 жыл бұрын
Maiar don't need to have children. In my opinion, I don't think Maiar can be created by anyone other than Eru as he has the flame imperishable to create. Melian had to take physical form, which eventually became permanent due to being in that form for so long, to be with Thingol. Since Thingol is an elf, a human like being and not an angelic being like the Maiar and Valar, he would naturally desire to have children. Either Melian was able to make herself physically enough like an elf to be able to conceive and carry a child, or Eru who did have his hand in things, gave her the blessing to be able to do so. Another thing that pops in mind, Tolkien was a devout Catholic. Angels don't need children and would be unable to do so as only God can create more angels. Plus, the gift of sex was only given to men so a man and woman could unite themselves in holy matrimony. This may be the case for Tolkien's world. Only the race of elves and men, and the adopted children dwarves, were given the gift of sex. Much like Crafty Spirit already said, the union of Thingol and Melian was a divine intervention from Eru. A once in a lifetime event. Like how Tuor is the first and only man with absolutely no elvish blood in him, became an elf through the powers of Eru.

Given Tolkien's Catholic upringing and religious devotion, i don't think its too far a stretch that he based Eonwe off of St. Michael The Archangel, The Prince of The Heavenly Host.
