What I really love about this scene in the beginning is you can clearly see Homelander trying to find different ways to get under Stan’s skin. His facial expressions, the smugness and quick eye darts over to Stan after he finishes any of his cheap attempts to hurt him are so telling. But unlike Homelander, Stan doesn’t need his respect and isn’t scared of him. You could see in Homelander’s face right before he said “don’t blame Vicky” his expression dropped a little, because he could tell what he was saying still wasn’t bothering Stan in the slightest, so he had to go for the closest thing he had for a daughter. And even there, Stan instead was impressed rather than hurt by Victoria’s actions. Absolutely love the details in this scene and the show in general.
@corrinadavis92702 жыл бұрын
@David B but Homelander doesn't need to see Stan to hear his heart rate. He couldn't see Stan's face at the beginning of this scene due to Stan facing away from him, yet he said his heart rate was 80/60. He was looking to see if his face gave anything away and also listening to his heart rate, but neither shifted, hence his smug expression dropping and he kept digging deeper to get to him.

Homelander genuinely enjoys people who aren't afraid of him. They're so rare in his life (only Butcher and Edgar) that he seems to like speaking with them. They're the only people whom he shows actual respect for - he asks Butcher's permission to come into his home (as opposed to just entering Newman's home) and he lets Edgar openly insult him (compared to threatening to kill A Train for insulting him behind his back). Since Maeve also stood up to him, he seemed to speak to her more as an equal (even though he took her prisoner), and it'll be interesting to see how his dynamic with Starlight also changes.

The title - glorious five year plan - is a reference to the comic's superhero team of soviet union heroes, called 'the glorious five year plan' and named after the shift of industrialization under Joseph Stalin. "When have you ever done anything remotely interesting or original? What have you thought to do that the lowest speck of this pointless species couldn't, were they to be granted your level of power?" Originally, that was one of Stillwell's quotes. Stan Edgar may not have said the exact words, but the sheer disrespectful tone of this dialogue remains the same. Whether a hero or a villain, Homelander sees himself as worthy of recognition, and without that recognition he's a nervous wreck.

In Homelander's eyes, he perceives himself as a God, but here stands a man, that by all physical standards is average at best and yet the shadow he casts over Homelander makes him feel insignificant. It is so satisfying to see Edgar putting Homelander in his place, but let's not forget the fact that Edgar is responsible for creating such a monster in the first place.

I feel like Edgar is stepping out of the way to avoid getting blamed for when this all goes to hell. He can't be blamed for something if he was never even a part of it after all. I don't think Edgar even knows exactly what will happen. He just knows something WILL happen and left himself open to get pushed out so he looks totally innocent. Edgar doesn't seem like the sort of person to let someone get one over on him. It's almost like he's leaving on his own terms. He's not upset at all. Like Homelander said he's just mildly musing as he looks out the window. Like nothing has even happened.

I love the display of power between the two. Homelander's powers can make him strong in the sense that he doesn't have to worry about being severely hurt or killed, but he's nothing without them. While Edgar has a different kind of strength that doesn't need power of any sort. It definitely comes in handy but he's a man of strong will, determination, confidence, and discipline. He literally stood up to a man who could tear him in half, and did so without showing weakness. He's not scared of being hurt or vulnerable because he's been through it, Homelander hasn't.

Edgar isn't afraid of homelander because he knows even if homelander kills him , he won't get his respect or fear . Coming back to this scene after the latest episode really makes Stan Edgar seem so much more evil. He knew how Homelander was being tortured by Vogelbaum and the other scientists, and he approved. Now he has the nerve to call him bad product? John never had a chance to be anything but an emotionally stunted psychopath. Edgar became evil all by himself.
@nintendope29767 ай бұрын
The fact that they psychologically engineered Homelander to constantly seek approval only adds to the reason Edgar doesn’t fear him, and why Homelander doesn’t hurt him. He’s just trying to prove himself, and it failed. And Stan was behind it.

This scene is incredible, and I have to say masterful misdirection/editing here. All the prior events of the episode and the prominence of Stan in this episode would tell most avid TV watchers that this is going to be his last episode. The choice of the final shot and the levels on the sound of the glass being set down are perfect (mostly cut out of this version on youtube). Every shot here is ramping up the tension, everyone in the audience (can't speak for comic readers, don't know anything about it) is waiting for Stan to go over the line with Homelander and be lasered in half. Stan keeps ramping up his disdain for Homelander, finally telling him he is "bad product", and walks out the room. The second last shot on Homelander shows his growing fury, and finally on the last shot, a wide profile on Stan as he sets his glass down and walks out the room. Even though that shot feels like the perfect time for an offscreen laser to suddenly obliterate Stan, he sets the glass down and that loud noise suddenly breaks all the tension as he walks out of the room. The audience is left dumbfounded that Stan, after losing a lot of his power in a single day and openly mocking and taunting Homelander to his face, somehow survived that conversation. Amazing stuff.
