E10 | The Big Lap of WA - Kununurra

This episode we leave the Gibb River Road dust behind us, and we settle into 5 nights in Kununurra.
This little Kimberley oasis totally surprised us, we were flat out every day climbing mountains to spectacular views, swimming in water holes and just generally in awe of how green and beautiful this area is.
Next episode we ignore a lot of advice not to tow out caravan into the Bungle Bungles, and we do it anyway!

Looks like a great trip guys, life-long memories...did a couple of months up to Darwin and across the Gulf to Cairns 20 years ago with our (then) 4 year old and 15 month old, it was life changing. We have been looking at buying an MDC Forbes 13 for our trip to WA next year (assuming the borders open) and have appreciated seeing the van in action (25 years in tents is enough). I lived in Kunna's for 6 years. If you're heading back towards kununurra from the bungles stop in at the wunan roadhouse and ask if you can have permission to go to "Harry's hole" and get a map too. I think you'd love it. Maybe think about leaving the trailer at the entrance or at the roadhouse. Thanks for the awesome videos and a chance to see kununurra again. Also the road (weaber plains rd) you were on to see the butterflies, if you keep going it'll take you to the Keep river, lots of salties, but you can camp there and you're definitely going to catch a barra

Cam made a comment a couple of weeks ago in the vid about WA being the best state in Australia, as a NSW person it begrudges me to say that based on what we have been shown in this series I might have to agree with him. Shame that their lap had to be curtailed, but in saying that WA is as big as most countries so we are sure that their trip will still have been worthwhile. 10:50 maybe earlier. These are the rock formations younger than the well known Purnululu formations, AKA Bungle Bugles. While the surface pieces are fragile and should never be touched, the roots of the rocks are from an 800 million year old formation, just like the upturned formations seen from a boat on the Ord.

Just found this channel - some great videos! Bringing back memories of a similar (but reverse direction) trip my parents took our family on in '84 - I was 12. I still have the diary from that trip, along with all the cloth badges we collected from the towns we visited! Chloe and you will remember and talk about this for years... Quick question and apologies if you have previously answered - as a keen photographer I'd like to know what you are using video/sound wise to record and edit? Keep the great videos coming...

Cheers mate. Just very basic gear: Shooting video with a couple of GoPro hero 8s mainly, occasionally iPhone 11 or sony a6400. Using Rode mics with wind socks, and occasionally a rode wireless go lavalier. Drone is a DJI mavic air. Editing with imovie on a MacBook Pro. I know I could step it up with a better lens for the a6400 and an electric gyro for some stability. But it's so much easier to go 'run and gun' vlog style with a GoPro and focus more on content rather than setting up slick shots!

The run 'n' gun works well, so no I don't think there is a real need for the gyro/gimbal - and as you said, allows you to enjoy the actual experience rather than be bogged down on shot setup and so on. How’s the pop top going? I’m debating solid walls vs pop top- need some feedback if that’s ok? Interested to know how it copes with weather variances? Love the videos- Chloe makes me laugh😀underpants on the head is the new look for sure!🩲

It's all a compromise. Having a pop top is great in hot weather, hot air rises so when you can unzip the vents the whole way around it cools down heaps quicker. Great airflow through the van. Also less wind resistance towing, so better fuel economy. Also better offroad because it's not as top heavy, feels more stable. Little bit of flapping in really heavy wind. And not as well insulated so when it's really cold it takes longer to warm up. And then you've got to factor in it takes longer to setup. But honestly it's 2 minutes to undo 4 clips and push it up. For us, on this trip it was the right decision. We're often off-grid with no air-con so keeping cool is the hardest thing for us to do. Having so much airflow makes it a lot more comfortable. Heating it is not an issue off-grid either, as we have a diesel heater fitted. If we were in seriously windy conditions we can still be totally set up with the roof closed, but Havnt needed to do that yet. Hope that helps.

Not in our experience. Tried to get some money off, or adds on included but I reckon they're sales staff are instructed not to budge. But it was a good product so we were prepared to pay what they asked.

Its a risk that's for sure. But there's steps you can take to minimise the risk like standing well back from the edge, never turning your back on the water and choosing shallow clear spots where you've got more chance of seeing whats around you.

Not sure if you have ever mentioned it and I missed it but what sort of weekly costs do you incur on average? Obviously it will vary depending on fuel and repairs etc but it might be interesting for people to know if they are planning something similar. I remember reading, a few years back now, about the costs of towing a reasonably large van around Australia and it was a fairly eye opening number each week. Free camps will bring the costs down but then you would have to spend more on equipment to begin with to make it somewhat comfortable for everyone. Just interested as I have a bit of a number in my head.

Old Bloke yeh I was just wondering the same thing just before I watched this ep. and was going to ask the same question 😊 so Cam are you running some sort of spread sheet on your running costs. Be really keen to see how much it’s costing, that’s if you don’t mind sharing. We went to Kununurra around 20 years ago when we were living in Katherine NT. We stayed at the big 4. Just watching the vid brought back great memories as our kids were little then as well. We did pretty much the same things you show in this video, there was a great little museum in Wyndham that had a lot of interesting stuff pertaining to the history of the area. We also bought a carved boab nut from an Aboriginal guy who was sitting outside under a tree just carving pictures into the outside of the boab nuts, we still have it as we consider it real aboriginal art.

Tiffs pretty good with the figures stuff (and managing our finances in general 😂). She keeps a really detailed spreadsheet that breaks it all down. She's posted our 1month stats on FB with the full break down. But basically we're averaging $1200 a week for the first couple of months. That includes a few blow outs we wernt expecting. And averaging 17.5l/100kms in the dmax.

@@WildTouring Yeah maybe not quite as much as I was expecting tbh. Would help big time that you can do a lot of your own maintenance/repairs when needed. I can only imagine what a major mechanical failure would cost out there with towing, parts in remote areas and mechanics who knew you didn't have other options. Goes to show how important a bit of mechanical knowledge and equipment to find problems before they develop in to major issues is as well imo. Thanks for the videos guys. Excellent as always.

08:50 "black rocks". Why are they black rocks? Found everywhere water rises or falls over a long period of time. McKenzie Falls and Mitchell Falls are the best exemplars of old age. Up the river from the Horizontal Falls, the rocks aren't yet quite black. Up the Ord, which is very old, not many black rocks; which also speaks to age. Looking forward to your comments and opinion on the Kapok Tree.

14:10 not a Bull Shark. Probably a Dusky Whaler or a Gummy, both thrive in shallow water. Could've been, also, a Carcharhinus plumbeus. Bull Sharks work in deep, harbour tidal flows; which is why they're found in Sydney Harbour.

In the canopy - 300w solar mounted to roof, 2x 100ah Lithium batteries (ALLSPARK LiFePO4's), 40a enerdrive dcdc charger, Giandel 2000w pure sine wave inverter, victron BMV712 Bluetooth battery monitor. Works really well, allows us to run microwave, milk frother and charge drill batteries /camera gear daily.

CelFi go. It's the only legal booster available as far as I'm aware. About $1000, works okay. Will only boost reception if there's something to boost. So basically extends range out a little further from cell towers. But won't work if there's no reception at all.

Yeah I know what youre saying, they generally poke them away for a while until they start to break down. And I know cows are pretty silly and often get stuck in the mud, have seen it happen in low dams. But the base was solid river rock, he wouldn't get stuck, his neck was ripped open so he'd definitely been chewed on. And he was only half submerged, so the average salty would not be able to drag a 500kg+ cow much further (he was already a good few meters from the bank where the cows come down) .

We didn’t take too much notice as we didn’t have a dog at the time but wikicamps is great as you can filter by dog friendly sites. A lot of the national parks in WA are not dog friendly unfortunately.
