E3 Is Officially Dead - IGN Daily Fix

The Entertainment Software Association (ESA) has announced the end of E3 for good, 28 years after the first event took place. Plus, Sony has acknowledged today's reports of a security breach at Insomniac and said it is investigating. Disney’s head of gaming, Sean Shoptaw, explains why the company was happy to renegotiate on Indiana Jones for Xbox.

This was already predictable when we saw that companies didn't need E3 anymore to showcase/market the new games they have in the works. State of play, xbox showcase and nintendo direct, it was inevitable that E3 was on it's way out permanently.

Since 2020 we only heard media outlets complain about missing out on E3, it doesn't matter for consumers. Companies will use the e3 time window to stream their content directly to the consumers now. Basically cutting out the middle man. We will miss out on hands on information about videogames but that information was always overly positive because the game wasn't finished yet. When something is ready to play they will send out codes to media outlets anyway... so as long as Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo will prepare an online presentation we as the consumer won't miss out on anything

The first nail in the coffin was Nintendo deciding they would only do digital announcements at E3 and no press conference. That set a message to the industry that everything was going digital and physical presence was no longer required. Then of course, pandemic just shafted our entire society, making in-person a thing of the past... Work in general is rarely in person anymore.

Its crazy how the gaming media make fun of E3 closing down! Shows how little they care for gaming and the community at large. Can someone list ANY positive that the end of E3 will bring (has brought) to the gaming industry? The effects to date have not only been immediate, but extremely negative with industry wide delays of upcoming games and no event but Gamescom to measure how a games preview has been received. E3 was the ONLY event that kept all publishers on their toes every 12 months to ensure they put their best foot forward In June, else get overshadowed by the competition.

The media showed how untrustworthy they were when it comes to what they cover and what they ignore, so I'm not too saddened by this. I'd rather have the narrative controlled by publishers who produce the games than controlled by corrupt middlemen. That's the whole reason Nintendo stopped going to E3 back in 2013.
