Very nice work! I remember I also had a good laugh when the front shocks on my W124 were just like yours. You would push them in and they wouldn't even come back up!😂 I wouldn't be surprised if they were the original ones with around 375 000 km at the time!

@dinispaulino7512 @dinispaulino7512 Same! When editing the video I also had a smile when I arrived at that segment :) Its kind of funny to think that the previous owners never changed dampers at 320k on mine or 375 k on yours. That's just WAYYYY over the limit for dampers. Thanks for the support :)

@@DailyDrivenClasssics and a small heads up, there are 4 different front shock types for e34, all different diameter, and or nut size. , some old type shocks have oil added into the housing before putting the shock in. What are the odds my car had old red shocks up front, and old blue ones in the rear to..
@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@SJD-vo6qd @SJD-vo6qd Didnt know that there were 4 different styles. That seams excessive. Another subscriber wrote about the oil in shock aswell, but I couldnt find any info on the TIS manual so I just put them in dry. Oh, also my front left shock was meyle without oil. Front right was noname with oil. Rear were the original ones( insulation near topmount wasnt damaged and all clips were intact from the parcel shelve) from BOGE. They were all dead except the meyle one. Glad that issue is fixed now :)

Good job! I have a 1989 E34, the original dampers were Boge. I replaced them all with Bilstein, car drove great last time it was on the road. I agree with your sentiments on Autodoc. I have used Cars245 in Latvia twice now. They get some really bad reviews, but I have had no problems at all, I guess it's luck of the draw. TRW is generally OEM quality, as is Lemforder, but everyone is using alternative manufacturing plants, so nothing is what it was. Keep the faith.
@DailyDrivenClasssics8 ай бұрын
@bobfrankish8883 @bobfrankish8883 Hi Bob, Bilstein was unfortunately out of my price range, but as you said TRW is fine :) Also parts quality is all over the place at the moment... Aftermarket like H&R, Bilstein etc seems to be the far better option compared to oem spec :( Thanks for the support :)
@bobfrankish88838 ай бұрын
@@DailyDrivenClasssics You're right. Streten, M539 Restorations, is now struggling with Lemforder, he's found that most of it is no longer made in Germany and is lower quality.
@DailyDrivenClasssics8 ай бұрын
@bobfrankish8883 @bobfrankish8883 Yes I decided to only go with cheap parts in the future( suspension) and replace the rubber bushings with hard polyurethane bushings and then its good I guess.

@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@Maniacfists @Maniacfists Thanks! Yeah, go ahead and replace all arms and bushings. I always replace evrything since 1 arm doesn't do enough difference to justify the work involved :) and ususally if 1 arm or bushing is bad the rest will go a few months after :)
@Maniacfists9 ай бұрын
@@DailyDrivenClasssics I thought so and will do as soon as i got the money for it, I thinking doing Bilstein or some other that keeps the OEM comfortable feel but also a bit sportier, since I also want to lower it a bit not slam it but lower it till the arches are flush with the wheels, its a personal preference :) maybe use the e34 alpina material to keep it OEM+
@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@Maniacfists @Maniacfists I wouldnt go the bilstein route. They are great but spending so much money on dampers isn't worth it imo. For that money I would buy a good coilover kit where you can adjust the stiffness. Allows you to have everything adjustable :)
@Scala5989 ай бұрын
IIRC the oil in the strut isn’t from the damper, a measured amount is put in to the strut to aid heat transfer. Don’t think it’s needed on some modern dampers though.
@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@Scala598 @Scala598 Really? I didnt know that. I think this one was from failing tho since the other side was as dry as it gets
@Scala5989 ай бұрын
@@DailyDrivenClasssics yeah it's worth checking the workshop manual. I remember putting bilstein inserts in my old e30 and it specifically saying they didn't require oil in the struts.
@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@Scala598 @Scala598 Just took a look at the TIS manual and couldn't find any info on the dampers. A forum suggested the same thing as you said with the heat transfer through oil. It makes sense, but I don't think its is necessary to do so, since a car that will only see normal driving wont get the dampers hot enough to notice a difference. And this old crusty e34 is too slow to see any spirited driving :)

Great video man :) On the E39 its the exact same process (even on the rear), you also have to remove the front wheel hub assembly, if you don't have any lowered springs... Greetings from Austria :)
@DailyDrivenClasssics9 ай бұрын
@TheE46Guy Thanks for the info. Never owned an e39 so I didn't know. I thought on e39s it would be like on the e46 where it is accessible from the trunk. Took me around 30 min to change both dampers on the rear on the e46. Works so fast since the spring is not attached to the damper and you can just drop it with the car on the floor :)
@TheE46Guy9 ай бұрын
@@DailyDrivenClasssics Yeah on E46s it's much easier and faster to swap the dampers. It's actually quite funny but E39s and E34s are so similar. So you also have a BMW E46?

Great video👍 Just a comment about autodoc, have you tried to tell them not to send you another brand than what you ordered? I use them myself and I'm happy with them tbh. But they tried once to send me another brand than I ordered but I told them I would not except that. They never tried it after that, and told me they won't do it again. Always get the exact parts I order.

@MS-we4wi @MS-we4wi Thanks :) Yes I have talked to their support multiple times when i received another brand than ordered but it keeps happening :/ Another thing that also happened 2 times already.
