quick tip to make sure you get the bolts back correct in the OFG. Take a rectangular piece of cardboard, label top and bottom, punch 6 small holes, 2 top, 2 middle and 2 at the bottom. As you remove the bolts from the OFG, place them in the same orientation. If you don't, you risk stripping out a bolt when trying to torque down, if it bottoms out. They are different lengths.

Tip: You dont have to drain the oil or remove the battery cables or take off the oil line from the back of the filter plate. You can simply remove the oil line from the front with a 17 wrench. Also, once you remove the ground cable from the back of the alternator, just move the cable away from where u are working otherwise if you touch your ratchet to it, its gonna spark. And also, not alot of oil comes out once you remove the oil line or the filter housing, just put a rag or something under just in case. Quick 1 hour job or less if you know what youre doing

that possibility of sparking is why you disconnect the battery cable...murphys law always in effect..."if something can go wrong, it will..."

Thanks for that info. I just changed the oil in it last week and certainly don't want to go through all that. Battery I am going to do as its better to err on the side of caution.

Did this today, don’t drain the oil, just open the filter housing and let the air bleed it back to the pan. 4 hours. Thank you very much!

You dont need to drain the oil to do this DIY, just the oil filter and lid, as it will hold oil that will constantly drip once housing comes away from engine. Also after the alternator is out, but before the Oil Filter housing comes out, then clean away to your hearts content, degreaser, dish soap, microfiber cloths, garden hose etc etc... give it the works.... then remove the oil filter housing, that way you dont have to worry about getting dirt and water into your engine.

Fantastic video - had already done this a few years back and my tensioner broke so I wanted a refresher. He spoke clearly - told the socket sizes and sped up the video through any slow parts. I didn't get motion sickness from watching it either - just perfect. All videos need to be done like this, it gets an A+ in my book -thanks so much.

Easiest car ever to work on. I feel that most wouldn't have a channel if it wasn't for these e46 cars. All you need is common sense, the want/time to do it, and be able to turn a wrench. The best videos are the ones not edited to see the mistakes. Nothing ever goes perfectly. For instance, that gasket on a high mileage car is not going to come out/off without a fight of being stuck. It will also break in a million pieces and you have to make sure you don't leave any behind.

Many thanks for the excellent video (with tips) on repl. the OFHG. I can honestly say that I would never have been successful with this if I hadn't watched your video. I had just changed the oil and filter, replaced the drain plug, and tightend down the filter cap using a crescent wrench. On starting the car to drive it out of the garage, I checked under the engine to make sure everything was okay. Well, it was like I had a hole in the pan so much oil was coming out, I immediately shut off the engine and wondered what I did wrong. After a little internet research, it was an easy conclusion that the OFHG got damaged with my excessive tightening of the filter cap. I now have the correct 36mm socket and will chalk it up to a lesson hard learned.

How is the car running so far? Have you been able to fix a lot of the common issues? I’m in the market for an e46 and like you I’m a bit skeptical. I’m not a mechanic but I’m willing to DIY if what I have read on forums/reviews and seen on KZbin is accurate. Any feedback you can provide would be appreciated.

Idk about him but last summer I bought a fully optioned out 2002 325ci 5spd sport package coupe topaz blue, clear coat is ruined and it was neglected from Baltimore with 220,000 miles but I paid $2000 for the car running and driving, trailered home. (oil was 4k miles past interval so about 19k miles on that oil if its accurate) changed ALL fluids when I got the car home and the filter was in many pieces... the old oil made it too hot under the hood but it had never overheated, the excess heat just caused the dsc/abs module to fail, I replaced just the module from an 05 330ci I paid $70 for on ebay with pump but I didn't need that (this was the difficult one, under the brake booster and upside down, if you know you know... the motor is completely factory besides a k&n short ram intake and the vcg was still good until I replaced vanos seals. I replaced ccv system with an oil catch can, car wouldn't even run without falling into limp mode everytime with the old ccv. Control arms needed to be replaced and alternator as well as expansion tank but they were all factory with 220k+ miles on them. Clutch is solid, no slip and generally smooth but throw out bearing is toast, had to put a loooong clutch stop on so it doesn't grind when pushing in clutch. I absolutely love the car man I cant say enough good things about it, I've done all of the work in my driveway, only got help compressing suspension when replacing front control arms and im only 16. It's been leaking oil for a very long time and my skid plates are filthy but I just top off with fresh oil after about 5k miles or when it gets half a qt low. Main concerns are blown expansion tank, usually cant tell its blown without driving it, Only buy VDO/siemens mass air flow sensors as the car will never run right unless its oem, ive had 4 different mafs and they all made the car struggle to idle and start I was chasing lean codes and vaccum leaks when the solution was just buying the right maf, they control a lot on these cars. the car has been absolutely solid and is the single best handling car ive ever been in with factory sport suspension. if you find one ofr a good price don't hesitate unless the head gasket is blown they are bullet proof, looking to turbo mine soon.

Used this video to change the filter on my 2001 330Ci. It helped a ton. A few lessons learnt. 1) I pushed the power steering pump too far out of the way to give access. I then put the oil filter housing back in place, and when I came to re-position the power steering pump, it was quite difficult. Lesson is to roughly put the power steering pump back in position before re-attaching the oil filter housing. 2) Make a note of which is which regarding the two long bolts that attach the alternator to the engine. I mistakenly assumed the long bolt was on the bottom and took about 20mins trying to thread it before remembering the long bolt goes on the top because it also attaches the idle pully, hence the longer bolt. 3) My banjo bolt didn't have washers - the seemed to be built in.....Fingers cross I don't get a different leak. 4) Slight differences on the power steering bracket - but minor. Otherwise - all good. For a first-timer, it took me about 3 hours...but I works slowly making notes, and cleaning oil off the engine and other parts took about 40mins! Thank you ShopLifeTV

The five main oil leaks on this engine are 1. CCV, 2. sump gasket, 3. OFHG, 4. VANOS line, and 5. valve cover gasket. If you replace the VANOS line while you're in there, this job takes care of two of them👍🏻

Good one Jason! Straight forward and to the point ...excellent video with great camera angles to see everything going on or coming off. What about the torque settings?? ...I won't bother with them either ...when you got the feel when undoing plus it's hard to get a big torque wrench into those tight places anyway. Thanks for your time in putting the video together and posting it on the Tube. I just did my Z4 rocker cover gasket along with the 2 inside plug gaskets Like yer man below said ...when wedging the set of two of the plugs ....they exploded into little bits due to the brittleness of the 'rubber' ...'tip' if doing yours lay a towel around the gaskets to collect all the bits and stop any getting down into the sump or especially under the valves. I had oil burn on the rear manifold but couldn't see where the oil came from? So had the rocker cover gasket on hand anyway changed and re assembled to find I still had oil burn, so removed the cover again to see if it leaked past the new gasket ...to find out, it turned out to be oil residue from the leak underneath the top valve housing over the manifold ....but! ...it turned out to be an extra job worthwhile, as I found a 8/10 mm piece of brittle plug gasket around the valve area. This could have created a real problem if it washed under the cam! Thanks again Jason - Apologies for waffling on Just another tip ...best to use silicone grease to lubricate rubber ...reason, it doesn't have the properties to break down rubber, as seen in the brittleness in the gasket removed. Ea - Perth, West Australia

Also alot of owners torqued the 4 top housing bolts first before tightening the 2 lower bolts. The top 4 bolts are the only ones surrounding the actual gasket. I did star on all 6 and mine leaked within a week. Also forget any stock bmw (or other brands) rubber gasket. Go all in for a Viton rubber gasket and there's a good chance you'll never have to do this job again

Great vid, thanks ! Will be doing mine this week and also replacing that tensioner as mines a little noisy. But man... this guy and the "go ahead and" :) Instead of "Next we'll replace the alternator" becomes "Next you're gonna wanna go ahead and replace the alternator". So much redundant speech, but I've noticed it is and American thing. In case anyone's interested, my 'Go-Ahead-And meter' registered 35 occurrences in this video. 12 of which were in the first 2.5 minutes.

You can now buy,on E-Bay, a pump with pipes to save taking sump off.A tube is put in oil stick hole (after taking stick out ) thin tube inserted, other pipe thicke so used as outlet in to tub/can. Pump clipped onto battery and should empty sump.I would suggest stopping pump for cool down after 10 mins.It is something l do to save pump.

Gonna attempt this tomorrow bro, was having oil pressure issues on start up,so I changed the oil filter cap seals,2 small and large, but then realised my oil filter housing non return valve is staying open, allowing all the oil to go back to the sump instead of staying in the filter housing, it's causing low oil pressure on start up after a few hours. I took the car to a garage but they guy wasted my time saying it required inlet manifold removal etc...so Hopefully this guide helps me through it!

Thanks for this video man, was fundamental in helping me complete the replacement of my oil filter housing.

04 bmw 325i. parking ights flash and will not crank/start. Has done it before but only a few minutes. Now each time I get in it does it. Low mileage nice car. Have had heart surgery and can't take it to the shop now. Been sitting a week now.

Great video. You make it look too easy. Any reason for the oil choice or is Liquid Moly okay?

Beautiful video! Question. Should the engine oil be removed before replacing the filter housing gasket?

I REALLY wish I would have seen this before I paid the local shop $400 to do it!!!! Plus I had them replace my ccv system along with it for a grand total of $925. $278 in parts. Being a new BMW owner I didn't know where o start but now that I've watched all of your videos I have not spent another dime on labor. Thank you for these videos. I do have a question though. What are the two electric connections you disconnected for? Sensors or what? I would really like to know. Thanks in advance.
