Hot tip for those of you who hate horror movies/gore. No one should make you feel like you have to watch one. Anyone who says "don't be a baby" isn't worth giving the time of day because they don't care about you. I have vasovagal syncope and morbid OCD. My blood pressure physically drops and I could faint and my brain obsesses about people getting hurt or me hurting them, so horror stuff is very precarious for me. Had this when I was a kid, most people also just thought I was sensitive, but most people weren't mean or pushed the issue. It's not uncommon to have either syncope or otherwise just not want to see gore/horror.

Old comment, new listener, fellow OCD... haver? Sufferer doesn’t feel like the right term. Mine isn’t as severe as yours I don’t think, but intrusive thoughts tied to my OCD? Anxiety? I used to go through it pretty hard from the age of 12-17. Eventually I went to therapy and was taught a mental technique to help calm things down. Not sure why I started this comment, but it’s nice to hear similar stories to one’s own life, makes things seem not so small and self contained. Hopefully the live action show of The Edge of Sleep comes out in the near future, along with season 2 of the podcast!

The treatment dave went through was called “Sensory Processing/Deprivation Therapy. It was treating a form of parasomnia (abnormal movement, talking, and emotions while asleep) This could be in the form of night terrors, sleepwalking, sleep paralysis, sleep related eds and nightmare disorders. It’s easy to see how it could be seen as schizophrenia- and maybe is it. but for now with how far i am, we know that it’s a severe form of parasomnia

Ngl, they really nailed how crappy horror movies from the 80s and 90s were, with tropes like the alien mother and the alien eggs, the scene where the two main characters wonder at the end "Is it really over?" and the final scene alluding to the aliens still being alive

Oh also fun fact. The serial killers response of insecurity and fear is a pretty common thing for psychopaths. Given how their brain is wired with empathy center (which simply put is more than one area as it's more complicated than just one) being both reduced in physical size (13 percent grey matter missing in some of the latest research. Same goes for NPD; which is why some theorize that it's maladaptation psychopathy with a genetic propensity.), but also less active, the wiring for self preservation is higher than normal. It's been shown that they care very much, if not more than the average person about their own pain. it's like info that should of extended in a social animal got doubled to the self. They do no like being in pain, betrayed or anything they perceive as a threat and will respond in anger/violence or meek fear to manipulate getting what they want to get out of the danger. That said, they also have a low functioning level of understanding danger too, they lack/have reduced disgust response and it's one of the few emotions they can't read on others because they don't feel it themselves. This explains why as well that serial killers can do really nasty and objectively dangerous things to their own health. Last and most important, psychopathy (aspd/sociopathy) persons tend to have below average IQ's. Hannibal Lecter types are very rare and for the most part don't exist. Some are higher functioning, but overall they are impulsive, can't stand being bored and have smaller areas in their brain that should connect to others, but can not. So good job actually portraying a realistic serial killer psychopath. He was impulsive, seemed relatively normal until you looked deeper, got upset when caught, freaked out when he felt his own self was in danger, making him seem normal, if not more desperate than a regular person. It's also something a person is born with. I hope in the future they start testing early in childhood to be able to help them earlier, as studies have shown that childhood absolutely makes an impact on if they go serial killer, or just corporate asshole, or person whom you'd never know otherwise.
