Eric & below his remarks, Peter are both on the same thinking I have about all this. Oiling the bucket washer before you get it wet helps it to last a looong time but use something that does not poison .. Vaseline is a great one but, for a while it may taste greasy. Wont harm the sailor! You dive like a mermaid in appearance. Thats deeper than any swimming pool I ever saw, Wow! ( very graceful )

The gasket is called a Bucket and a trick is to unscrew the shaft cap and drop some olive or vegetable oil on to the shaft letting a little seep down on to the leather Bucket, this hells the sealing and rejuvenates the leather and the Bucket shape was correct when you extracted it. Go girl, keep them vids coming.
@dennismoroney3 жыл бұрын
Great advise on lubricating the bucket! The pump works much the same way as our windmills on the ranch.

Ooo thanks for the advice! I'll definitely try it next time it starts acting up!

Olive/vegetable oil on leather. Smear/rub veg oil, coconut oil, on half your spare leather sheet, enough that it penetrates, both sides, not immersed. Like you would your leather motorcycle jacket or boots. Elk skin or goat skin much better than cow leather skin. (Cow leather stiffens when dried out after soaking (like in Maine). Elk & goat stay more flexible. Elk more abrasion resistant. btw same thing for 'leather' deck gloves. But I'm not a leathersmith.

That is a very cool improvised repair! One thing for me growing up with a cruising sailboat is that you learn all sorts of skills, alternators, water pumps, fuel injection, painting, navigating, cleaning etc.. You have a great blog, you are the salt of the earth. Salem, MA

Be very careful even just diving down to free your anchor, and have a knife on you in case you get hooked up in old fishing lines.
@CombatDoc543 жыл бұрын
Hey Jason, excellent observation. I had to go down and free my anchor once from a crab pot. My depth finder was reading 52 feet, more than I cared to free dive so I used my tanks. I get down to the pot and somehow the crab pot rope got hooked on the top of my tank. I took diving lessons back in 1974 when I was stationed at Camp Pendleton, I instinctually pulled my knife and cut the line. After I got back on my boat the realization hit me about how close I could have come to being eaten alive by Neptune. I was actually shaken more after I got back onboard. I absolutely still think about that to this day. I could grab the line, but I couldn't reach back to my tank to free it. I'm retired now and live outside of Branson, MO. and still dive by Table Rock Dam. That same knife is always with me.
@SIC-SEMPER-TYRANNIS3 жыл бұрын
@@CombatDoc54 , I used to do a load of wreck diving off the east coast. Unfortunately wrecks attract fish and fisherman and are always covered with webs of old fishing lines. I've had a hook rip into me once, and been tangled up several times well over 100ft down. Just gotta stay calm and always have a knife, and a backup knife. I always carried two, one with a flat pry end and serated edge , one for sharks. .

What Jason said. I have a knife which I bought years ago--it has a serrated edge on one side which cuts through rope easily, and the other side is taper-honed to a very sharp edge. That easily cuts nylon or braid, but for cordage the serrated edge is best. I would never swim or dive without it.. It has a hand guard and a wrist loop with a swivel.

Good work on the pump, mines a different style but also uses leather. I place a bit of cooking oil on it before reinstalling it and it seems to last about three or four years. I also had an electric pump but when it failed I went back to the 50year old manual that just keeps working.

I have the same type of pump, and I've never thought of priming it with my mouth. Good idea. But also, you will notice that when you pump the lever unprimed, air is alternately pulled into and out of the nozzle. If you block the nozzle with your thumb while it's in suction, the pump seems to prime itself.
