Wow Eddie! This car seems great for someone who wants to work on their own car without using complex dealer scan tools. It's great that BMW didn't include an OIL DIPSTICK in this model so that when the electronic sensor goes bad you can blow the engine up. The plethora of plastic parts in the engine is great too so that I can see it crack and break as the year go by. Awesome design.

I have a 2007 328i and it runs great. It has 118,271 miles on it. To me that's low mileage for a 12 year old car. It is a fun car to drive. Two more car payments and she's mine. The only thing that has been changed on my car is the oil pan gasket. It is a great first car.

I'm 18 and this is my second car... my first being a 330ci. I purchased the car from carmax and I would reccomend going through them because for a little extra you can get an extended warranty which covers all those expensive repairs for the next 4 years. For an 18 year old this car has plenty of power and is a good way for someone young to learn their limits. It handles very well and for the most part is a comfortable ride. Plus you get to ride in style ;). I agree with you Eddie this is one of the best cars for the money.

I'm on my 4th 3 series, had e36, e46 (favorite), e92 & now f30. One thing I learned from driving these cars is avoid the first gen turbo engine fitted with overwhelmed under engineered electronics, aka e90 series. Bmw got it right with the later models & f platform but always avoid first gen technology. E46 dodged all the common e90 headaches.

I ran an '06 one of these up to 155k without any problems other than standard wear and tear replacement parts. You'll get plenty of naysayers saying how unreliable they are but that's generally because they have done no maintenance on the engine and expect it to never need it. It's also fairly expensive to maintain an E90 but worth the money in my experience. Water pump: between 120k and 140k Alternator: between 120k and 140k Starter motor: between 120k and 140k coil packs: 80k and 150k head gasket: 140k vanos: service this every 50k You want to proactively maintain these items because any of them failing will cause a check engine light and the need for a tow truck. A common cause for a check engine light is the fuel door not being closed properly (I shit you not). The good news is that apart from vanos the others on this list will give you plenty of warning they are going by rough idling and surging. The starter will take ages to crank when it's on its way out and you'll see more battery draw. One last thing, these engines have very tight tolerances and over 140k will eat up to a quart of oil every 1,000 miles.

time to buy these cars is right at 100k miles. my 2009 328i rwd wagon, white on saddle brown with the sport package, we got with 65k on it and it needed everything done. water pump, thermostat, suspension refresh, radiator, cooling hoses, starter, belt tensioner, oil filter housing gasket, valve cover gasket and oil pan gasket. if you know how to DIY and you pick one of these up, do it. it is a super rewarding and fun car to drive. however, if you’re going to take it to a shop to do these repairs/ preventative maintenance, be prepared to pay!
@lss35362 жыл бұрын
This is an excellent first car if you’re a young guy/gal WHO IS INTO CARS. If you don’t care about cars, get a Corolla. This car will cost more money because it takes premium, and the oil leaks repairs will cost a couple hundred, most expensive being the oil pan gasket. Other than the infamous water pump failures, this car is rock solid with the n52. I had mine for 4 years and outside of the aforementioned, had zero issues.

I own a 2009 BMW 328i LCI that I bought CPO in 2012 with 18,000, miles on the odometer, It has 143,500 miles and they have been trouble free, Besides tires and oil changes, and brakes no issues whatsoever. I have test driven many of the new BMW's and the steering sucks. I want to get a new car but none of the New cars i.e Audi BMW Mercedes Lexus Jaguar Acura Cadillac Infiniti, drive like my e90. In my opinion, the e90 is the best, the steering road feel is the BEST. Also as far as fuel economy, I have put Non-ethanol 93 gas in my car since day one and my average gas mileage with my lead foot is 26.7 mpg, so efficiency hasn't been an issue.
@mattn51607 жыл бұрын
I picked up a CPO 2011 with 42000 KM. This was back in Dec 2014. I've had the car for two years and, aside from a transfer case leak which was addressed under warranty, the car has been trouble free. I think that this might have been a costly repair had it not been covered under warranty. Overall, it's a very good family car that has the old BMW DNA. I also test drove a few F30s (sedan, wagon and diesel wagon) over the years and find that these are a step backward in terms of driving dynamics, especially with respect to handling and steering feel. Service on these cars is on the pricey side, but they are probably the most reliable BMW model ever made.

Fuel economy is not bad but it isn't the best either but its totally usable. Engine runs smooth at 113k miles and the transmission has some kicks specially in the low rev range, but once it gets going after second gear it shifts great. I'll try to see what is the issue with the first to second gear kick, maybe transmission fluid can fix it

You should review a Quattro B7 A4! You can find them for less than $8k with decently low miles

mrYaniii22 With Ontario plates, also, maybe odometer is in kilometers, then 70,000 km not so impressive. But it will do 150 in 3rd, with 3 (or 5 ??) more gears left.

he said about 110,000 miles. That's like 175k kms.

Just picked up an E92 335i with the N54 for AUD$22000 (USD$17500) and only has 80k kms (50k miles). It looks basically brand new. Cars in Australia are usually way overpriced compared to other countries but that seems like a pretty good bargain.

The 6 cylinder E90s are really good cars, the ones with 4cylinder motors are crap... They get the same fuel economy as a 6 cylinder but are really slow and have had lots of timing chain issues.

I purchased almost the exact same car (no Xdrive) as an off lease certified pre-owned vehicle several years ago. It had about 36,000 miles then and has 56,000 miles now and has been totally reliable. I much enjoy driving it. It drives and handles well and feels very solid. I drove the later F body and while I enjoyed the turbo, it feels cheap in comparison. It’s not silky smooth like the inline 6, which is legendary. I’m happy with it and wouldn’t consider trading.

Not a good first car. Just because you can afford the pre owned price doesn't mean you can afford the maintenance costs. That is especially true when the water pump breaks, the coils need replacement, the oil gasket begins to leak, or you need to service the diff.

I bought a used E90 328i before, only 3 year old car, but it break down every month... sold it back after 8 month, not worth it. The repairing cost is just crazy, soon or later will go over 10k.

william31518 how do you manage to beat up an n52? I changed the seals on mine and have had not a single problem after 40k miles (I'm at 130k)
@williamlai315187 жыл бұрын
It's not the engine, it's those little electrical problem such as door lock and etc... The engine is great! just others that's pain in the butt.

william31518 huh, idk. I've never had any electrical problems nor heard of em, that sounds unlucky:(

Yea, it's just unlocky :( overall I really like the E90! but just that particular one drove me nuts! Now I have the F30, i miss the E90's steering feel so much. not a big fan of the electric steering on my F30.

great review but, "A Good First Car" in the uk you'd never get insurance (mandatory) for a car like that. we have to make do with 1.0 litre cars worth less than £2,000

@jbiley7 жыл бұрын
Saying the E90 328i has a better engine than the F30 doesn't really make that much sense. The twin scroll turbo charged inline 4 found in the F30 makes more horsepower, puts out more torque and is more efficient. It's better in every way.
@eddielastname62557 жыл бұрын
It's far less reliable and it is not smooth at all. It sounds like a diesel from under the hood and a ricer 4 banger from behind. It makes more power and sips fuel. That was the point of its implication. But it is not an overall better engine than the N52 inline 6.
@jbiley7 жыл бұрын
Eddie Last name I own a 2015 F30 328i and I can say with conviction that I would take my car with the N20 over the older car any day. Would I prefer a 330i - N55? Yes but they are hard to come by here.
@eddielastname62557 жыл бұрын
+JSB HIFI right. You own it which proves you're biased. And the N55 comes in the 335 not the 330
