or i dunno maybe the issue was that EA/bioware decided they no longer wanted narrative heavy games and shitcanned project joplin? and then took the first draft of joplin to make a mess of a multiplayer game? and then hastily threw together a team and told them to make something cohesive out of the scraps of development across the last 10~ years in like, three? with a shoestring budget? maybe it's the fundamental mismanagement of the IP from the jump because bioware's management decided they fucking hated the very genre they built an audience around and have been actively looking for ways to jettison writers, drove off all of the people who built the franchise (who are notably on good terms with the people still there who got the title out) and have actively expressed that the issue was with the corporate culture of the company? no youre right it's totally the pronouns. nevermind that gender and the qun have come up in multiple previous titles, or that taash is probably the only character who experiences actual character development. this is OBJECTIVELY the least "woke" game in the franchise because it skims over all of the dark elements? slavery, racism, oppression, homophobia - all of that's missing from the setting? the most you get is taash whose whole story is the one thing that built on existing lore and knowledge of the qunari, and it falls short because it doesn't delve deep enough INTO the gendering of qunari society to do anything with it. the problem was that it was a hastily shoved together mess to try to recoup costs. none of the developers are happy about it, they're all burnt out, they have all been talking about how hard it was to get this thing out the door and how burnt out they are. the writers and developers fought for more time, more lore, more interactions, more EVERYTHING and got told no. blame the goddamn senior leadership and board of the company, not the people who endured unprecedented layoffs in the industry while CEOs were making record profits and taking huge bonuses.

It wasn't meant for the fans to enjoy, it was meant for the creative leads to enjoy. The author of a story is at a fundamentally different perspective than the reader. They know what emotions a particular scene is meant to invoke, they know what secrets a character has, they know what parts of a characters description you're meant to focus on, but the audience doesn't. They might miss the tension, they won't know a character is meant to be important and gloss over parts meant to imply something sinister about that particular character. The author has the answer to every question you could ask, so if they're writing the story for themselves they're bound to leave out otherwise critical details because they don't need those questions to be answered. Not just in regards to the central plot, but the setting, character relationships, character abilities, basic details that are necessary to properly set the stage can also be easily forgotten.

They did not expect 3 million copies sold. With 3 million they would still lose a huge amount of money. They would need at least 5 million - more likely 7, maybe even 10 million - copies to get even. Somebody high up in Ubisoft said that they needed 10 million for Outlaws to get even. And I don't think Failguard was much cheapter to make. The claim of 3 million is just to cover up how bad it really is.

@ Well, when I look at Outlaws and how bad the graphics are in many instances, I'd think that the budget of Outlaws was not even in the 2-digit million. It looks WORSE than midrange titles from 10 years ago. We can't look at the graphics and tell if the game was cheap to make or expensive. Same with Hollywood. Godzilla -1 was optically WAY more impressive and better looking for its 15 million budget than every single one of the big budget marvel movies that cost 10-20 times the money. Companies have managed to combine huge budgets with aweful qualities in optics. Be it CGI, customes or ingame-graphic. That's quite an achievement if you think about it...

First they did expect to sell 12 million copies.. They did need to sell at least around 6 million copies for full price to break even. Later, after seeing this is a massive flop, they did lower their expectations to 3 million copies, sold for ANY price for the whole lifetime. In the end they only sold under 1.5 million copies. Game is a terrible flop, getting only 12.5 % of the expected copies. Even their 50% statement is a lie.

I figured after several people asked "who is this game for" this would generally be the outcome. I definitely found myself asking "wait this is dragon age now?" After the last DA I played was Origins, it just looked completely different from what I was hoping it would be. i used to buy EA sports games every year. eventually i started skipping years because it was the exact same shit year to year, basically a $60-80 roster update. the f*ck this point was when i noticed the same loading screens from NHL12 in NHL14. they would have tips and blurbs about new features and changes on the loading screens. NHL12 and NHL14 both had the same blurb about improvement to a mode, (bare in mind i'm recalling something from 10-12 years ago) it was about the create a pro mode, it was touting how line changes are realistic now, no more 5 minute shifts or something to that effect. i know it's kind of petty but it's something that i never forgot (especially while thinking the whole time 'gee, nhl14 feels a lot like nhl12'). even going from fifa09 to fifa12 didn't feel like a leap. going from fifa12 to fifa14 was just a menu downgrade. i couldn't tell you what madden is which from like 2008-2014.

I mean… I still at least enjoyed Dead Space 3 and Mass Effect 3 somewhat… even though several achievements were practically soft locked for me because I couldn’t really play the multiplayer aspects of those games… this is definitely on a different level though… will this kill EA? Not likely… they’ll bounce back with more Sims 4 expansions and practically the same game with a slightly new mechanic sports games… but this definitely hurt them

What are you talking about. Bioware and EA laid off 50 fucking devs for this game while the game was still being developed and gave them two weeks of severance. This was after they shitcanned their whole unionized QA team. Am i insane. does absolutely nobody know anything about the development of this fucking game and why it's the mess it is? It's not the "woke" writing its the WAY higher ups who kept jerking the team around and shuffling them from project to project. Veilguard was finished out by the team they built for Mass Effect because people were getting fed up and LEAVING due to how badly they were being treated. Or they were laid off and the people remaining had to scramble to pick up their slack. And it was only in proper active development again in like early 2022 to when it released? And then EA assumed, for no discernable reason, that this game would sell like hotcakes when they ALSO INCLUDED IT IN THE EA PRO PASS? I didn't even buy this motherfucker, I got it through my subscription.

Ea Said "Player engagement is 1.5 Million players" In plain English that does not mean 1.5 Million sales. as the game was given away for free, and was also on EA play as well. Also it was discounted VERY quickly so a reasonable portion of those sales would be at the lower end not the starting price end. So it is actually possible they have done worse than EA is letting on. Maybe Hypnotic is right in saying they have not actually sold 1 Million Copies.. as that many people paid the EA Play Subscription for a month paid their $17 and never touched it again. If that is the case (and it was rumoured this happens a whole lot to Ubisoft too) then things could be so very much worse than these figures suggest.

It's crazy how much they're hurting the groups they pretend to care about. These efforts are just making women, racial minorities, and trans people look terrible for these fields If they hired people from these groups based on their ability and passion, the effort would go much slower, but it would be a solid bedrock for their supposed goal. Instead, they grab the most hateful people with the least talent and just cram them into position they have no business being in I guess patience would rather some level of intelligence, and we know how difficult it is for these people to even write intelligent characters in their own setting
