Yep, happened to me TWICE on my 14 GTI. The second time it happened I got rid of it. Now cruising in a 16' Audi A3! No one's had any issues with the balance shafts on the gen 3 engines yet! 🤞
@Weissworx9 ай бұрын
Nor have we. The Gen 3 went to a needle roller bearing style balance shaft, which seems to get better flow.

Quick question. If the front balance shaft has seized, would it also prevent the water pump from working? I'm having a "zero" oil pressure problem. Before the problem began, however, my engine began vibrating (not idling rough) but vibrating the way it would if you had a broken engine mount. I found the dogbone/transmission mount had failed, but after replacing it, the engine was still vibrating. Before I replace the rest of the engine mounts, I'm trying to figure out if my oil pressure and vibration problems are balance shaft related. I assume the engine would lock up if a balance shaft seized but I suppose the sprocket could just shear off and the engine would still run but not be balanced. Thoughts?
@Weissworx11 ай бұрын
Good evening. If the belt has snapped off the back side it would cause the waterpump failure. With a failing balance shaft you would or could have oil pressure issues and. Vibrations. I would pull the timing belt cover off and take a look to see if the belt is intact.
@quesnoy134211 ай бұрын
it's a tsi. Timing chains, not belts. I think I'm gonna check the motor mounts before anything else. If one or both are bad, I replace those. Then, if vibration is fixed, I'll replace oil pump. If that doesn't fix the low pressure, I'm gonna sell the car as a project. I've already replaced the timing chain tensioner once. If I have to dig that deep into this engine again, it's not worth the hassle.@@Weissworx
@Weissworx11 ай бұрын
@quesnoy1342 Even on a tsi, there is a small belt that drives the water pump. When ro you see an oil light
@quesnoy134211 ай бұрын
correct. I've changed the water pump belt within the last couple years. The car did not overheat when the vibration first started. And I drove it at least 30 miles before I got home. So I assume at least the front side balance shaft did not fail. It could also be some RTV bits blocking the oil pickup. VW really screwed up by using RTV instead of O rings on many seals.@@Weissworx

I recently removed the balance shafts out of my 2010 CC due to the vehicle having low oil pressure issues. Upon removal of the exhaust balance shaft, I noticed that 2 of the screens were blown in. The intake side balance shaft had intact screens, seems to be in working order. I guess my question is, would the exhaust balance shaft having blown in screens cause failure and producing low oil pressure issues?
@Weissworx5 ай бұрын
I have rarely seen a rear balance shaft fail. Most of the time it's the front that causes the oil issue. The front shaft can appear to spin freely. But I have seen when the shaft is worn out it'll cause an oiling issue
@ivanvega28215 ай бұрын
@@Weissworx the intake side balance shaft seemed to be in working order. 3 of the screens had contaminant inside but it seemed to be working. The exhaust balance shaft 3 of the screens were blown in and one of the screens was missing. It appeared that it slightly melted the plastic sleeve that covers it at the passenger side end. Another observation I made was that the girdle cover (valve cover 🤷) is pretty scored up but the actual cylinder head isn’t. Both the cams are also slightly scored/scratched. Going to be replacing both cams with used but in good condition cams I pulled from a perfectly running vehicle and replace both balance shafts and button it up and cross my fingers.

Well, I’m reporting back a little late but I figure I would document my experience. No more low oil pressure issues. As of right now, not sure if the cams and/or both balance shafts replacing worked. Vehicle has been running great. I was able to order the exhaust balance shaft tool. I was able to remove the exhaust side balance shaft with 2 90degree curved breaker bars. It wasn’t pretty… but it worked after a couple attempts. Also, I had to freeze the new balance shafts for a day in order for them to fit without fighting them. Thanks for the video man!

"Borsehung Germany" ? I live in germany, work in the automotive industry and own my own small shop. And Ive never heard of this brand. 😄 Regarding the repair: I think you did a pretty good job on the repair. But if you replace the chains its strongly recommended to replace the chain gears, too. Because the chain gears wear in, too and they wear wrongly if the old chain was already stretched (a bit).
