2 stroke detroits are really efficient when it comes to converting fuel to noise and heat without those pesky byproducts know as horsepower and torque.

@@mikeshultz1007 I’m guessing that you have never driven a 2 stroke Detroit then. Because they were known for having more power than other diesels from their era. If you wanted power and could deal with the noise, you got a Detroit because nothing matched the 2 stroke power.

@Adam R I have driven numerous vehicles with the 8v92ta and I one time I drove a crane with a 8v71 and I previously owned a prevost xl40 with a 8v92ta that I ended up doing a repower with a 12.7 series 60 because the 8v92ta was gutless even though it was rated at 500hp and lacked reliability. I also have a partnership in a 58' charter fishing boat that has twin 735hp 8v92's that I am getting ready to repower due to the high fuel consumption along with no reliability and I will be taking a full ton of weight away from the transom and by switching to inline 6 cylinder engines I will have much more room to work around and service the engines. The problem with the 2 stroke detroits is the lack of torque which is what really matters and the 2 stroke detroits only have around a 2.5:1 horsepower to torque ratio while most other 4 stroke diesel engines have around a 4:1 ratio. 2 stroke detroits were outmatched and rendered obsolete by 1970, the only place they maintained market share was in the bus market and that is due to General Motors ownership of detroit diesel. My grandfather had a 67 pete 359 with a 270hp 855 cummins and at the time nothing would out pull it and after that he bought a w900 with a 8v71 and he only kept it for a short period of time wishing he would of kept the cummins and then he got another w900 with the four and a quarter cat 1693 which was untouchable.

That brings back painful memories. I drove commercially with the last generation of 6v92 on the east coast (the new buses had the 60 series). Our buses were well maintained and inspected every six months by NY officials (the coach company had just a little over 100 coaches). But going over the hills (yes, hills, I grew up in and live in the Rockies) on the PA turnpike with a 6v92 was 20mph. But at least I got up the hill. Yeah that he finally made it! Hopefully you'll make that little engine go from, "I think I can." to, "I've got this! You call this a hill? I'll show you a hill!"

One trick is to disconnect the alternator and cooling fan, especially the cooling fan since there is no clutch. Back in the day as a kid traveling through the rockies with my parents, Dad had me get in the TOAD and assist going up a few grades. We crossed the continental divide in record time for us doing that. Have to watch the engine temp on the TOAD as the bus block the radiator airflow. Could have used the TOAD to assist here as well.

You could see the first three tries that the turbo was barely spooling. At least you could hear it and the black smoke eased up some after your temporary repairs. That’s a heck of a little hill, reminds me a LOT of the wooded 9 acre property I grew up on in Central PA. Our long stone driveway hill also had a turn at the top, but to the left. Wintertime was fun! This bus wouldn’t have made it to the top of that driveway either, maybe not at all.

I am recovering from the same experience last week when I flew to Florida to pick up my new MCI MC9 and it took me a full 7 days and 12 hours to get the bus 500 miles and I got 10 miles from home and had to finish out the trip on the back of a wrecker. So now I’m chasing a bus full of gremlins like disconnected and corroded ground cables, inop generator, over half the lights not working, multiple loose wires on starter, fuel pressure sensors, oil pressure transmitter, and on an on. Something is now keeping me from starting it but have not been able to locate it yet, it’s like there are no batteries in it at all. Flip the master switch and hit the start button and she normally starts in one rotation but there’s no attempt to start now. I need to get her to Scott cause when I crawled in there, I’m starting to leak oil slightly between head and block and I just topped 10k miles on a rebuild so I’m guessing no one ever retorqued the heads after running it for a bit. Temperature is steady at 150, oil pressure is dropping low when she heats up and I’m gonna verify that with a new gauge yet. And I was told over and over that the bus had gone thru a recent DOT style inspection to be sure it was road ready and ready to sell. And on top of it all, I purchased from a church. Oh, I forgot to mention that the tag axle is locking up and sliding when I apply the brakes. And this is just what I’ve found so far in past day. I was assured it was a trouble free bus ready to criss cross the country, but ended up getting rooked by a church! Granted some of it will lay on my shoulders too for not finding a mechanic in Florida that I had no knowledge of to do a presale inspection on and I accept that responsibility and is why I’m not going ballistic about it all and gonna suck it up like a man and jump in and start fixing it all. Besides what I said above, the bus does run good, drives great, rides really nice, and it’s the style of bus I’ve been looking for for several years. It’s rust free, got a few love bumps here and there in the stainless that I need to work out with time, needs a new shnazzy paint job, etc but all stuff that’s fairly easy for me to handle. I’ve painted for 40+ years so it won’t be a big deal and will be a bigger job to choose color and layout than the actual prep work will be. I’ll get her back in order into a gorgeous bus but it’s just more upfront work that I was told and assured she didn’t need and she was ready to run across country. I need to try to get her to Scott as soon as he can get me in cause if anyone is going to touch those heads or go into the engine in any way, it’s gonna be the monkeys 🙊! I don’t trust anyone else to do that level. I’ve been subscribed since Scott had just over 1000k subs and they have earned my trust! I’ve just got to get these small things figured out as to heats keeping her from starting before I can put her back on the road and run from NC to Bus Grease Mountain. I am a patreon member so hopefully I can get a spot in a year or two even tho I don’t have the high dollar membership to get the next available spot, lol. I’m happy to wait my turn as long as I can get in sometime, maybe this summer if I’m lucky. Just let these couple buses be examples of why you need mechanics to crawl over these and do presale inspections!! There’s too much for one buyer to look at when your flying in from out of state and your tired and have a 500 mile drive to look forward too. It’s really easy to miss critical items and I screwed up and am gonna pay the price for it!! Take care and be safe out there folks!!

9G90 injectors and a TV8512 or TV7511 turbo with a 1.03 A/R ratio will provide a reliable 350 hp from the 6V92T engine - as long as there's no exhaust leaks in the turbo plumbing.

Don't get me wrong, I like those eagle built buses, but their age has finally caught up with them to a point where they lack any get up and go when it comes to near steep hills.

Be interesting to see what all is wrong with this one that it wouldn't make it up the hill easily.

Nothing makes it up that hill easily. It's such a STEEP sucker the videos cannot really convey just how steep. You have to see it in person to truly appreciate it.

(no, new england axle load special) Is that a 35ft Brownsville-Matadoros coach? Wow, I remember reading about it in Bus World years ago. He REALLY needs a 4 stroke retrofit.

I would think dumping the water tanks to save weight. 1gal = 8.3lbs. Adds up easily.

If that happens again, have him back up the driveway since reverse is a lower gear.
