This bus has even more shocking maintenance discoveries! A very sketchy previous repair on this bus is unbelievably dangerous and inappropriate repair on such a large vehicle that’s running on the highways. Bad spindle, no oil in a hub, bad bearing race, air brakes completely out of adjustment and even more defects.

I drive a semi truck and after watching 10 or 20 of your videos, I will NEVER see these busses the same way again. I always thought I should be scared of them because of the drivers but I never thought about they are built a lot like semi trucks, but some of them are incredibly poorly maintained. If a motor carrier was caught driving a semi like this, DOT would put them out of service in a heartbeat. Can't even imagine how many CSA points a semi in this bad of shape would get.

As a former bus mechanic on this exact model of bus and a driver of the same model, I take issue with some of this statement. I maintained two '96 XL Mirages and were kept maintained in impeccable shape. And being a former O/O semi truck driver, I had plenty of issues against what is today's truck drivers. Some barely know how to drive forward much less backwards, while some of the bus driver's I met on my travels while driving these busses for charters were some of the most conscientious drivers I had ever met. Most of these busses are owned by private individuals who have no clue on bus maintenance and repairs are something you do after it's broke. So, don't lump all these busses into one, there just as many poorly maintained trucks on the road you should be scared of as there are busses, probably more. And on a side note, I did once in a while work on other busses that would almost qualify as bad as this one and if the owner didn't agree to my recommendations for repair, that bus and owner were shown the way out, off my shop's property.

Having just driven over 1200km here in Canada in a weekend... seeing really sketchy driving and looking vehicles on highways. I see these coach buses now, and i look at dirty hubs ... oil spots on the back of the busses smoke , and many other to me now obvious signs of lack of maintenance and or abuse... and these are in service busses. My friends father owns a MCI 102 A3. It's a beautiful coach. He isn't very mechanically inclined, but very educated about how important it is to keep her safe and road worthy. He has the money to do so and of course, it's a good position to be in. I think there needs to be more stringent standards on mandatory training and knowledge to people who operating vehicles like this. In the states, it's considered an RV. But in any other configuration, it requires a commercial driving license, with endorsements. It's dangerous. Thanks for educating us.

Id say bypass the RV classification completely if it is over a certain weight, size, and/or has more than two axles. Ive said it on other videos that if any and/or all of those conditions are met then the "RV" should be required to have a yearly DOT inspection.

This death trap thing is going on over here, too. I used to think because all municipal people hauler are anually inspected that they must be safe- now maybe. But in the 80´s the clapped out ones were used to haul school kids. I remember from my busing days there only was ONE good, newer bus that had heat in winter. One. All others used for us were ice cubes. The driver had to let in cold air to "defrost" the windows, nothing was right. Sometimes in the late 70´s the drivers had to light rags under the engine to thaw it. German school buses were the crappiest, at least where I lived. In the bigger cities the fleets were way better and newer, ours were clapped out crap.

I’m impressed the technician just snatches the brake drum off. Those babies aren’t light and usually weigh much more than a standard truck drum. Also, old rule of thumb in friction business; tapered blocks (linings) wear straight, untapered blocks wear tapered (thick ends, thin center). Admittedly, I’ve been out business for a few years so the extended service linings may break that rule. BTW, love your channel, it’s real world!

I'm flabbergastered and discombobulated!! New Zealand mandatory requirements for both Certificate of Fitness and Warrant of Fitness at 6-monthly or 12-monthly intervals depending on age of vehicle, are rigorous and sometimes a bit over the top. If a cop stops you or you are involved in an accident and your certificates have expired, even if your vehicle has no defects, you are for the high jump. Insurance companies will probably refuse to pay, leaving you liable for everything. Best outcome for this bus? Tow it to location, put it on blocks, remove all mechanicals and use it as a sleep-out.

@@BusGreaseMonkeyso if this is in fact the bus I think it is, the guy that owned it had some custom cars built at a high end shop of a good friend in Houston and would show up in it frequently (show boating). At 1 point one of the bay doors was knocked off but not sure which side. Anyhow, no one really knew what this guy did for a living until one morning we see a breaking news story of a triple homicide in College Station, TX. The suspects fled and I think were seen getting dropped off at the bus. They caught them on the run, I think in TN but not a 100% on that. So turns out this guy was a major Meth manufacturer in East TX, they went to College Station to collect $30-$40 grand I think, something went wrong and 3 people killed. When they were caught, he actually had his dad driving the whole time, the guy, his brother, a close friend and dad (in his 70's) all charged and convicted with 3 counts of 1st degree murder each. That was the last time we seen the bus. But as soon as I seen it pop up on the screen, I strongly feel like this is the bus but again cannot say a 100%, its been 22-23 years ago. Ill see if I can find the old story..... I've been around a ton of custom coachs thru a close friend with a leasing co and some private owers over the years and have been around a ton of busses, I tend to recognize them again when I see them as I'm sure you do.

Here in New Brunswick,Canada all vehicles must have an annual MVI ,things like this bus wouldn't be on the road.People that drive these buses should have a cdl or at least an air brake endorsment on the driver's licence.

Well, that particular spider would make your day really bad, pretty sure that was a brown recluse. Dont get bit by that lol. Thats a ton of carnage of parts if I ever did see one. I'm almost shocked the wheels didn't literally fall off trying to get it up the hill in that condition!

I think its safe to say that some previous repairs were accomplished by an individual suffering from a skin irritation. Usually presented by a crimson discoloration of the epidermis adjacent to spinal column c1-c7. Narragansett Bay

All rolling parts are toast, that’s going to be an expensive repair just for the rolling parts. Good luck.

I am thinking the brilliant shade tree mechanic put some oil journals in the needle bearings to improve lubrication. This will save on how much oil one needs to put in the axle. See it held together rated at 70mph. Good thing it never hit 71mph. It’s like a governor at 70 it shakes so slow down. What a brilliant way to keep it below 71.

Looks like someone used a brazing tip to melt a race previously to remove it. I’ve done it while doing undercarriage work on heavy equipment. If done correctly, you won’t cut through the race housing. It takes a steady hand to it. When done improperly, what you get is what you all experienced with the groove in the axle. As you stated, very poor craftsmanship.

You should produce a large sticker „maintained by BGM“ and put it on the back of each bus. So everyone can recognise that this a save bus on the road and not such a death trap😅

That spindle, I suspect what as happened is that the outer bearing had failed at some time in the past and had seized on the spindle, whoever did the “repair” and I use that term very loosely seems to have taken a grinder to it to try and get the replacement bearing to fit. If you have to do that because the inner cone had seized onto the spindle the short answer is that you don’t, the only way out is a replacement spindle and if you find out that that is an expensive option, well tough, the other option is to scrap the thing. And given the issues already found with the vehicle that wouldn’t seem to be unreasonable. The problem seems to be is that when people are told that these vehicles are heavy duty vehicles they seem to assume that they will run for evermore and a day without needing any work done to them and sadly this is not the case. And no, I am not blaming the present owner, I understand that he has just bought the vehicle and has brought it to Scott for an inspection to gauge what work needs to be done to bring it up to a safe and roadworthy standard.
