I drive a semi truck and after watching 10 or 20 of your videos, I will NEVER see these busses the same way again. I always thought I should be scared of them because of the drivers but I never thought about they are built a lot like semi trucks, but some of them are incredibly poorly maintained. If a motor carrier was caught driving a semi like this, DOT would put them out of service in a heartbeat. Can't even imagine how many CSA points a semi in this bad of shape would get.

Sad part is several of these issues might not show up on an annual dot inspection if the mechanic wasn’t looking really hard.
@timatwell37283 ай бұрын
@@BusGreaseMonkeyNo but a Dot cop would find the biggest part of them and something else wrong with it as well if they wanted to but that bus would be hauled from where he did the inspection I can almost guarantee that.Hell there was one guy at a local inspection pad near me that wrote up brand new trucks on there way to the dealership from the factory but haven't seen him in a long time don't no if he is at a desk or they fired him but he sure hated truck drivers

As a former bus mechanic on this exact model of bus and a driver of the same model, I take issue with some of this statement. I maintained two '96 XL Mirages and were kept maintained in impeccable shape. And being a former O/O semi truck driver, I had plenty of issues against what is today's truck drivers. Some barely know how to drive forward much less backwards, while some of the bus driver's I met on my travels while driving these busses for charters were some of the most conscientious drivers I had ever met. Most of these busses are owned by private individuals who have no clue on bus maintenance and repairs are something you do after it's broke. So, don't lump all these busses into one, there just as many poorly maintained trucks on the road you should be scared of as there are busses, probably more. And on a side note, I did once in a while work on other busses that would almost qualify as bad as this one and if the owner didn't agree to my recommendations for repair, that bus and owner were shown the way out, off my shop's property.
@georgiapatriot45753 ай бұрын
@@dougnorton5143 Instead of being triggered, please go to the dictionary and look up the definition of the word "some". And for the record, my fear is not of well maintained busses--my fear is of the busses that are not being maintained at all and the fact there is no way to know which is which just by looking at them.
@edwardantrobusjr22533 ай бұрын

My friends father owns a MCI 102 A3. It's a beautiful coach. He isn't very mechanically inclined, but very educated about how important it is to keep her safe and road worthy. He has the money to do so and of course, it's a good position to be in. I think there needs to be more stringent standards on mandatory training and knowledge to people who operating vehicles like this. In the states, it's considered an RV. But in any other configuration, it requires a commercial driving license, with endorsements. It's dangerous. Thanks for educating us.
@johngaither92633 ай бұрын
I'm thinking a bus or RV provision to their operator's license with additional endorsements for air brakes and large size vehicles just like big trucks. A DOT type yearly safety inspection isn't a bad idea either.
@turnerg3 ай бұрын
Id say bypass the RV classification completely if it is over a certain weight, size, and/or has more than two axles. Ive said it on other videos that if any and/or all of those conditions are met then the "RV" should be required to have a yearly DOT inspection.

Having just driven over 1200km here in Canada in a weekend... seeing really sketchy driving and looking vehicles on highways. Admittedly, I’ve been out business for a few years so the extended service linings may break that rule. BTW, love your channel, it’s real world!

This death trap thing is going on over here, too. I used to think because all municipal people hauler are anually inspected that they must be safe- now maybe. But in the 80´s the clapped out ones were used to haul school kids. I remember from my busing days there only was ONE good, newer bus that had heat in winter. One. All others used for us were ice cubes. The driver had to let in cold air to "defrost" the windows, nothing was right. Sometimes in the late 70´s the drivers had to light rags under the engine to thaw it. German school buses were the crappiest, at least where I lived. In the bigger cities the fleets were way better and newer, ours were clapped out crap.

The rust between the bearing and spindle is a result of fretting corrosion. Fretting occurs from minute movements. It progressively gets worse over time. That's why the spindle is wearing away. I watched an earlier video of yours where a wheel bearing was in the early stages of fretting and you commented that it was minor rust and replaced the bearing without addressing the root cause of the fretting. I suspect that spindle will look like this one in due time. I experienced fretting at my first job out of college as a mechanical engineer. A metalurgist explained what fretting was and its root cause. It was a lesson I never forgot

New Zealand mandatory requirements for both Certificate of Fitness and Warrant of Fitness at 6-monthly or 12-monthly intervals depending on age of vehicle, are rigorous and sometimes a bit over the top. If a cop stops you or you are involved in an accident and your certificates have expired, even if your vehicle has no defects, you are for the high jump. Insurance companies will probably refuse to pay, leaving you liable for everything. Best outcome for this bus? Tow it to location, put it on blocks, remove all mechanicals and use it as a sleep-out.

Problem is that many potential owners simply don’t know what it takes to OWN a bus. Buying one is probably the easiest part of the “adventure” one is facing, knowingly or not. My only advice would be to look for one that has just left active professional service. So you know the maintenance has not been that long ago. And keeping in mind that although you got a fresh one, it will need proper maintenance directly after purchase, no delay. Demand service history, every bus company has that for every bus. Have an expert assisting you to look for potential expensive repairs. And have at least basic knowledge of the vehicle in general. That goes way beyond the knowledge of your every day driver. Buses used for public transport are usually bought in badges and maintained professionally. A big mistake is thinking less maintenance is needed because the vehicle is gonna be used less frequently. Wrong! Sitting for months does much more harm to a complicated vehicle than using it on a regular basis. Driving a bus is a nice thing, owning a bus though can be a nightmare. Greetings, Willem, Hekelingen, Holland.
