I just finished reading the three body problem trilogy, I live in constant fear of a hostile alien race picking up our radio signals, pinpointing our location, and they just lob a kinetic kill vehicle traveling at 80% the speed of light to take us out in an long afternoon. We need to either cease all electromagnetic communications or set up an early warning detection system several hundred AU from the solar system. This game we’re playing is high risk, low reward. We need to get smarter.

Funnily enough I was friends with the 2 other superpowers but I only had a military pact with 1. So when that one invaded the other one I was dragged into the war against them and their vassals (half the galaxy) and I was like (wtf man I Wanna be neutral) I then proceeded to single handedly collapse the super power which was No.2

On a deeper look at it though it's kind of self-contradictory considering that it'd most likely be impossible to eliminate a target at the revealed location without revealing yourself, meaning that it is not actually the safest option. And if we're having this discussion, then it is highly likely than any would-be aggressors are also having this conversation. Therefore, the ladder of fear posed by the hypothesis is essentially inverted into a ladder of trust, if only by necessity.
