Kim is a self-taught singer. To practice at night and not keep the whole house awake he piled all the blankets he could find and crawl under them and practice. This was Kim's first time making it before the judges. The other 4 times he didn't make it through the initial screening. Then to go on and win it all, that is a testament to his persistence and self-belief. He sang a duet with the gal that finished second. It is a powerful performance. Right at the start of the song Kim comes in first and when he started the first phrase, one of the judges said something under his breath which I found out was, "it's all over". Kim Has met with minimal success I think because he is not a 'pretty boy' or slick and cool. But he sings most of them under the table. I keep thinking good thoughts for him and hope he gets what he deserves. Either way he will keep on singing because it is what he is, it is what he does. Kim Young Guen is a natural born singer, he has no choice. Thank you for reacting to this wonderful human being. Here is the link to that duet. Love the breakdown! I especially love that you made the comment, and edited in the particular moment you were referring to and even slowed it down, added subtitles etc. I haven't really seen other vocal analyses that bother to put the effort in to make edits in post like this. It makes for a much more enjoyable watch without having to watch someone go back and replay the clip a million times. Very well done! Also loved the explanation of the techniques etc. of course!

I really appreciated your technical breakdown of this performance. I've always loved it, but noticed some interesting phrasing. In particular the replacement of by in "by your side" with fy. It almost comes across as fireside.

The Korean pronunciation of vowels is different from English. I loved him since first seeing him on this show. After passing several levels, he also sings a duet which is so great.

Hi Scott! Please check out LiSA. Any of her performances on First Take. I'd suggest Homura or Gurenge. I think she's technically one of the most gifted singers on the planet and her superpower is intensity and emotion within her singing. You can hit CC for English subtitles on those. Also, anything by So Hyang and Charice Pempengco singing All By Myself. Those three would certainly add some fuel to that conversation.

Thankyou for having the courage to be honest. The kid is amazing, but his English just isn't even close enough. He'd really be better off singing in his native tongue instead of trying to sing in English... he is doing himself a disservice because even though his voice is beautiful the pronunciation and tonal issues just can't help but diminish the song... I can't stop hearing mispronounced words, words half-spoken, and improper inflection.... I think some work on song choice/ arrangement and keeping it in his native tongue could really take him to the next level.

He did sing in Korean after this song. It was much more moving this and obviously no pronunciation issues since it’s his own language.
