I saw DEVO twice. The first time was on a lark. The second was sheer madness. They were unreal. I saw them play That's Good with the giant screen. The audience was so mesmerized, there was a delay before cheering after every song. DEVO ended every piece like a stopwatch, with each instrument halting on the count. It was like the songs played themselves out and were yanked out of audibility. I have never seen or heard the like of these red hat geeks. That's Good.

These guys were parodying the excesses of the 80's ..... just as it was happening. Too bad nobody listened as most wrote them off as a quirky, new-wave band. They were MUCH more than that but their irony, cynicism and satire fell on mostly deaf ears as the 80's moved forward. They were more like geeky, punk rock mixed with synths, creating what you could say was the first "cyber-punk" band. They were too far ahead for the time and much of their stuff is still relevant in today's world.

I mean, the hall of fame is a joke. Rush had to be literally fan voted in. Rush, who should have been in the second they were eligible. They seemingly had a vendetta against Progressive Rock since it's inception, unless it sold a veritable shitload of units like Pink Floyd to the point were they were impossible to ignore. Devo are like say King Crimson in the regard that they are high talent, bleeding edge, and have a large cult following. Things the R&R HoF seemingly dislike.

They were considered too weird, too different, and (most importantly) they were too ahead of their time. I always liked Devo, but only recently have I truly started to appreciate just how good their songs actually were, and that they were deliberately trying to be the opposite of cool, the alternative to what was popular.

devo was right about so many things. about technology and about de-evolution in which the 50's had more technological advances FOR the actual people than today n since then it's been diminishing. it's a good thing that we can use technology n that everybody looks for it, it seems, n that everyone believes it to be a good thing. it focuses on sex which everyone finds good. it seems though everyone seems to be looking for the same thing... n that's good.... because it gives us, the ones who aren't really into it, the time n freedom to enjoy life n create actual solutions to our problems instead of a technological addiction.. it's a beautiful world... so whip it...

I saw DEVO on this tour. Early on in the run they'd had some trouble with getting the performance and the films sorted out but by the time I saw them it everything went off like it was supposed to and it was *unknown to audiences of the day* to have live performers on stage interacting with a visual in real time. It was the first time most audiences ever saw stage lights move and zoom by remote/computer control. They were really cutting edge, and they stayed on brand and on message from the mid-1970s to the present day. I'm really impressed with their ethic - and the most recent studio album, SOMETHING FOR EVERYBODY, was one of the best they ever did.

Drummers usually want to be seen as their own musicians, doing solos and flaunting their shit. Alan Meyers was a true drummer doing the drummer's principle task... setting the rhythm and tempo for the rest of the band to follow. Which he did, with mechanical precision. That's why he's remembered as "The Human Metronome."
