India's biggest trade partner is china. India is allowed to do bussiness with china but nepal is not allowed to even talk with china? Every country has its needs and priorities. For example: India flips both side of the coin...it gets closer to russia as it needs military arms and energy supplies from russia. India gets closer to usa as well cuz they need american tech and are largest exports of indian IT manpower to the United States..a source of remittance. This is called geopolitics and one should not view nepal as being favouring one side or the other. It does best for what its ppl need. Same goes for india.

S. Jaishanker is correct!!! Nepal being a sovereign nation has the right to trade to better its economy! If china provides cheaper petrol the pipeline will change and if china produces better quality food and merchandise than nepal will switch its trade from India to China. At the moment Chinese merchandises are gimmick and services are not trusted , and our food and culture has similarities with India so our friendship has not change! Nepal is closer to India than China. The free border movement between two countries binds the relationship strong. Also, linguistically Nepal and India are same.[ Both use the Devanagari script]. Nepal wants to expand trade relations with China, to uplift Nepalese from poverty and improve standards of living. Don't worry, no country can replace Nepal-india relations. I can vouch that more than 80% of Nepalese have a favourable view towards india. Its a relationship like nail-to-a-skin. There is a unresolved boundary dispute, which has been a sore point of contention in relations, otherwise it is pretty strong and will remain strong for the unforeseeable future.

@@prabinhudeomaharjan There are two narratives to this.. 1. Bihari people who reside in Nepal conducted the blockade because of the new amendment in our constitution of not providing lineage based citizenship and even for the spouse, they should've waited for at least 7 years period to get it. 2. India did not welcome our constitution while rest of the countries congratulated Nepal. India wished some changes in our constitutional amendment, couldn't have it, thus the blockade as retaliation to not obliging to India.

Mr.jaishankar , there was shortage of petrol in Nepal in 2015 because right after the Great Earthquake , India imposed economic sanction and border closure and did not allow essential commodities to enter Nepal. The petrol line is yet another trump card India is playing with Nepal for future. It will use that to manipulate everything they want their way. Rest of the things like Electricity grid for transmission of electricity , railroads , checkpoint they are all mutual. JS is right in saying that Nepal does the biggest trade with India , Nepal gives its border Indian towns business of US dollar 7 billion USD every year. Nepal and India depend on each other and its just not trade, Every drop of water that goes into Indians comes down from thousands rivers and its tributaries that originate in NEPAL. Nepal in many ways is a life giver ! something that politicians like Jai Shankar will take the credit the other way round !! Stupid politicians

This Indian obsession over Nepal china relationship is harmful to both India and Nepal. First of all, the natural god-given 'personality' of Nepal is a synchrony between Indian and Chinese civilizations. Like Momo: Chinese dumplings with Indic spices. Or our temples: Hindu gods and goddesses in Pagoda architecture. Nepal will only thrieve as Nepal if we play our god-given roles right. Secondly, India-Nepal relationship is solid at people to people level. We buy sugar and salt at your borderside towns. If we get very sick, we have to go to AIIMS and Apollo. And we watch Bollywood all the time. China is a good neighbour but it is like a distant rich neighbour living behind high walls. You cant go there when you are sick. You cant go there one afternoon, watch a movie, eat chaat and come back. Indian Government/media's over indulgence and lectures over Nepal China relationship builds mistrust among Nepalis. We are a sovereign nation after all. We must build our diplomacy ourselves. When India-Nepal-China relationship stays healthy, China cannot replace the strong people to people relationship between Nepal and India. If India insists on playing a dominating Big Brother, Nepal will eventually switch to China's orbit. At best, Nepal can be a case study for India in regards to what improved relationship China might bring. At worst, India will continue dictating Nepali politics. Nepal will continue paying lip service to Nepal-China relationship. And nobody gains anything. (Which is the status quo)
