Eamon Kelly Stories from Ireland 1

Known in Ireland as “the seanchai” in the 1950s and 1960s for his RTE broadcasted stories, Eamon Kelly brought a tradition of storytelling to the masses both in his published works and for years in Galway where he ran a one-man show telling stories to enthusiastic, receptive crowds. Born in 1914, the man himself died in 2001, having traveled the world, been nominated for a Tony on Broadway and shared countless hours of stories with his Irish audience back home.

Yes indeed Eamon was a popular spot on the old radio eireann in 1960's Ireland on Monday nights long ago when I was a very little boy there , he was in fact a secondary school Woodwork teacher as well and was a great story teller and entertainer

You see the respect Ian Wright has by taking of his hat instantly. Never takes off hat during overlap. But here he does for this man. My father never took of his hat, except he was going into bed or into mass, and my mother said he slept in both places. At that time every man covered his head, there was respect for the brain then, a delicate instrument. As well as covering the head the hat is handy reseptical if your caught short, you can feed a few oats to a horse out of a hat. You can collect apples in the orchard, you can bring in layed eggs from the hay shed, you could nearly put a hen hatching in a hat, well a small hen. Head gear gives a man authority the popes and the kings and the bishops knew this, they always covered their heads when they had something important to say. The greatest sign of respect is to take off your hat to a man more senior or influencial than you. Ian Wright shows so much respect here. What a geezer.

Being the Month of March I thought it Grand to share the Irish Songs to my children before they go to sleep by Shinead O Conner..I sang the green mantle one it was so moving..my boy was too tired to enjoy it..but my girl she adored them..but out of respect I did turn it off because it's spring forward and it's Late..but in the mornin..I played them to my kids on the way to school..and then seeing the fog I was inspired more (I'm in Southern California mind you) so I looked up Irish stories and walking up and down the hills listening to this Irish Man Storyteller with a smile on my Face

Went to Westport in Mayo 25 years ago. I think it was a pub owned by a Cheiftan. Molloy or Maloney? Anyhow I befriended an old man who seemed to be at least 80. His wife could not speak but sat with him all night. She just sat and stared straight ahead. The man welcomed me and made sure I had a seat and was taken care of. I told him I was a New Yorker, and we chatted about life and music and more. He was completely humble the whole time. Then at the end of the night, everyone called for him to get up and give a song. Well it turns out he was the ”main event”. He was a seanneachie and seannos singer. I ended up buying a cassette tape of his comical and witty stories. Lost it years ago and can’t remember his name :(. This guy speaks in a very similar manner. Love this rich culture.

Before the tv people used to go down to the crossroads and dance to great traditional music. Telling great stories in front of a roaring turf fire, and singing and playing cards. Simple days. But everyone were neighbours who helped each other in many ways. And plenty of laughter.

Eamon Kelly was not related to me but as a very young boy Eamon Kelly scared the heck out of me, I had many sleepless nights hiding under the blankets because of the many ghosts, banshee stories( Facts) he told us about, No Eamon Kelly was not related to me but I learned many stories from this man which I tell to p[eople to this day

marc chestnut Everyone in Ireland is related! Look at the size of it. My grandad's mother was an O'Connor from Leitrim, my other grandmother's grandfather was a Dean from Cork. My DNA profile indicates that I'm related to about 97% of the men in Ireland. Fancy that!

Liam O'Leary I had an old great uncle by the name of Dick Conley who when ready to marry a new wife told the lovely lady that he had only one relation alive, and she was a nun living in a convent in Ireland! In fact, he had 2 brothers and 4 sisters all well and thriving. Why did he tell her such a thing? Just for the hell of it, or so he said.
