After returning home from #vanlife Europe we knew we wanted to hit the road again with our dog and chase the sunshine. So, we pack up our self-converted sprinter van and drive from Ottawa, Ontario to Tijuana, Mexico in just 7 days! Of course, as is true Eamon & Bec fashion we have a few hiccups along the way and reconnect with some of our favourite people too 🥰

I’ve crossed over at least 50 times back-and-forth from the US to Mexico and I’m sad to say that I’ve always had more trouble with the US side. I wish the border patrol would learn that you can search and question without being assholes.

In 1979, I had the same experience entering Canada, for the day! I had my bed set up on the back seat and my clothes, etc. under the bed on the floor and in the trunk. He said, "Looks like you are moving to Canada!" I said, "No, I'm on a month vacation! Living in my car". He still took me into, 'that little room!'. I enjoyed my day in Canada! Wish stayed and visited a few days, instead of one day. I would like to have gone to Vancouver Island. Next time I'm up that way.

Even as an American citizen I have never had a warm welcome into America 😂 I spent the fall in Quebec, made it to Canada with no issues. As I was coming back into the U.S. I had my van torn apart until I eventually said “you realize you uhhh have to let me back in right?” and then they just stopped what they were doing, left my stuff all destroyed/cabinets open and let me through 🙄

@@eamonandbecI know it’s not fun…..and I know it’s a huge pain….and they CERTAINLY could be more polite, but it helps to try and realize we live at some bizarre times, so they do it for ALL our safety and security….. I was at the border one time when they were checking out a little hatchback driven by what appeared to be an old grandma and grandpa type…….I kind of got a bit angry with them since they seemed like sweet old people ……I quickly changed entire opinion about people when the 2 men inspecting their car found a whole arsenal of guns and rifles under suitcases in their back hatch….. THEN….. I was grateful they had us all stopped for inspections…..

@@Noname-cn4ly I definitely understand that and am grateful for the security, but think they should cool it when dealing with people who are not considered a threat. They were not questioning me on whether I had weapons they were questioning me on whether I lived in my car. They would go to my stove and my bed and at my spices and say “what do you use this for?”. It’s just weird, I’ve left the country about 50 times, have ALWAYS been welcomed into other countries very kindly but have NEVER been welcomed back to the U.S. kindly & I wish that would change so that more people from other countries could have a positive first impression of the US.

Eamon walking the dog is a great mini introvert moment for Bec, always wondered how difficult it would be to live together with someone in a van as an introvert, cause you literally have no space to be alone when on the move, but small moments like walking the dog alone is just a great way to get some space for a few moments 🥰

I think this is my favourite vlog yet. Even though it’s just about you guys heading down to Mexico, seeing Bec healthy and so happy, the hug and cuddle you give Eamon while meditating and then Oso, adorable Oso , with his head out the window just loving his doggie life. Today is -7C in Victoria, BC. The Florida of Canada. We are snowed in and more snow coming this afternoon. It took me 4.5 hours to walk and take the bus yesterday ( many roads no bus service due to snow) to a place near here that usually takes less than 40 mins round trip. Enjoy Mexico! I’m just realizing we were on the road at the same time! I traveled to Florida with my cat to visit family on Thanksgiving. I traveled back to San Diego beginning of December. Stopped in San Antonio and Tucson. Passing by all of the sprinter vans I kept thinking “wouldn’t it be cool to just pass by one of the many creators I follow”. My husband and I are from Canada, and we motorbike across the US/Can boarder multiple times in the summer. The way we 'pump' each other up before we get to a boarder... is tell one another "their goal is to rattle you" and "no matter what be your best version of yourself", "stay calm, stay calm, stay calm!!!!" , "don't react to anything they say!"

Great video. Doesn’t matter which international border you cross or international airport you come to. All border patrols are “suspicious” and ask a lot of questions. They only do their jobs. Especially if you enter EU, Australia, Canada or US. All of those countries and union are highly attractive to live an work in if you come from outside of those. Even if you’re a citizen of the above mentioned, you get asked a lot of questions when traveling to either one

The only time border agents should be asking questions is if you're entering as a tourist (i.e. without a visa or citizenship) as they need to verify that you aren't going to overstay or work and that you have accommodation and the funds to support yourself. That said, the US is still the rudest and most aggressive of them all, going as far as treating US citizens like criminals simply for returning home (happened to a friend of mine) on a US passport. The EU, Canada and Australia have always been polite and they don't preemptively think you're trying to illegally stay, unlike the US. If you're entering a country you're a citizen of and you're getting asked questions then you're either doing something wrong or you've given them reason to question you. If you're going between countries you're a citizen of, and not doing van life, try to travel as lightly as possible (ideally carry on only) - leave somethings with a friend or with family, or have an apartment (in the EU they're cheap for citizens). It makes the world of difference in crossing borders. I've never once been questioned entering the UK, Hong Kong, Singapore, the EU (I'm a citizen of a country within Schengen), and, only once have I ever been asked "do you plan on working here" when returning to Australia (I'm an Australian citizen) to which I said "I don't know, I'll work if I want to, I'm an Australian citizen", border agent replied "sorry, just finished working the international queue" - keep in mind this was a time when there was a queue specifically for Australian and New Zealand passport holders separate from the international queue (Australia and New Zealand have freedom of movement for their citizens and permanent residents called the Trans-Tasman Agreement).

Your experience coming into the US was our experience going into Canada for our Honeymoon. I was 7 months pregnant at the time. I guess we looked super sketchy so they separated me and my husband took our phones and questioned us about every little thing. It was the craziest thing we have ever experienced! This entrance into the States sounds so much like what happened to me when I crossed the border between Port Huron and Windsor into Canada a few years back. I grew up in Michigan going back and forth across the border on such a regular basis that I found this recent experience so negative that I have avoided going back to Canada ever since. I truly wish it was a more inviting experience going in both directions again.

Love you guys!! We know you have genuine intentions but unfortunately US border patrol almost has to be that way to try and weed out suspicious activity. As an American leaving the US is usually pretty easy, but getting back in can be trickier. They’re tougher on everyone to make sure what’s coming in isn’t sus lol.
