Please be careful before purchasing guys. My mom is Mexican. I looked into getting dual citizenship (American + Mexican) for the exact reason of buying/investing on property in Baja. Please do extensive research. From the little I know, foreigners can only "lease" land for 100 yrs therefore, you can't leave it to your kids. There is also restrictions, something like 100 miles from beach front property or national borders (Guatemala/US) . There are so many documented stories of Americans "buying" then investing thousands of dollars only for the government to later come in and say "oh sorry, this is illegal" you have to vacate. Please please please be careful. I've lived in Sonora, Mexico. I have family there in Ensenada . I'm fluent is Spanish. I have seen first hand how corrupt attorneys, and all local government officials (all offices) may be. If you're going to purchase don't do it in Baja, go mainland. Make sure you have an absolute perfect interpreter. Not a "Spanglish" person that speaks understand basic intermediate Spanish. You need someone good to look after your interest, that can advocate for you and ask all of the right questions. To ask the questions that you didn't even think you needed to ask. Love you both. God speed. Hope all goes well for you.

Good advice but Baja is not all bad. One other thing is Americans can get Mexican citizenship and buy property. You need two years residency first I think. Then if you take some exams can apply for citizenship and have dual citizenship.

Hello, fellow Mexican mom child too lol it's kind of sad how people take the land from the people who are native and leave them not being able to afford living in their own home. Please tell me your thoughts. It's so complicated and just feels wrong if I'm honest:(

@@perkycurlyfries I 1000% agree with your comment, I love Eamon and Bec but I’m disappointed in their participation in the gentrification and diaspora of Mexicans. If THEY think over a million USD is expensive, imagine being Mexican and earning pesos… they will never be able to afford it, they can’t even dream about that… & it’s ONLY that price because of all the foreigners buying up land and making the prices go up. And a lot of foreigners are only using these homes for vacation homes, they already have homes in their country and are ruining peoples lives so they can have a vacation home part of the year and escape the cold. It’s modern day colonization. I’ve noticed some Mexicans are starting to hate foreigners because of this, especially in places that have large expat populations like CDMX, and violent crime against foreigners is going up. It’s so sad to see people affected so negatively by foreigners, especially when a lot of those foreigners are from a country that literally built a wall to keep THEM out of their country.

Guys you keep talking about how nice the community of different countries is but you only meet other people from EEUU, Canada or Europe. Please don't be so naive. You are just tourists meeting with tourists. The community of a place is the people living there not a bunch over happy KZbinrs with Vans. It happened in Marocco and now again in Mexico.

If Canadians like you guys can't afford to live in Canada, moving to Mexico and making it unaffordable to the locals is not the solution. Its very selfish. Mexicans dont earn nearly as much as Americans and Canadians. This will have a huge impact on the local economy over time if more and more of you end up doing the same.

A half million dollars for that fixer upper? So that means the property you put in an offer on had to be well over a Million dollars, I'm thinking $1.5 million. And that is U.S. funds so around $2 million Canadian. WOW, KZbin must pay very well. I mean congrats to you guys to be able to do this. I feel for you guys on that fixer upper! This same thing happened to me and my fiance! When we were first looking at houses. Our relator showed us this place that was in the perfect location and checked so many of our boxes and we said we wanted to put in an offer so she drew up the paper work we filled it out made and offer and then got a call the end of that day saying their was confusion between the realtors and the house actually wasn’t on the market anymore!!! Another realtor that ours knew had shown the property right before we went to see it that day and the couple they showed it too wrote an offer higher than our later offer(after theirs had already been accepted) and the sellers accepted that coupled offer that day and the listing wasn’t taken down! So we got shown the house, fell in love, to find out it wasn’t even for sale anymore 🥺

The experienced old crone in me says, slow down, take it easy. There have been some great comments about the issues of wealthy white people buying land and impacting local residents negatively. My advice: rent something nice for a time, see if you really love it, and it will give you a chance to make an ethical and anti-colonial decision about real estate purchases. Best luck to finding the best path for you and others.

Hi Eamon & Bec, I am so happy for you both after everything you've been through. I am very excited you are both spending time in Mexico and showing a different side of the country than most other people see. I am from Mexico (and also a US citizen) and just want to bring something to the table. It is very easy for Canadians & Americans to come into Mexico with a van, explore and maybe even buy property. I hope as you go through this journey you can also highlight that Mexicans don't have this privilege in the US or Canada - we can't drive in with a van and decide to buy property and stay however long we want (not even touching on the elements of finding work). I hope you are aware of how you might also contribute to driving up property prices, etc. For your FYI there used to be rules that only Mexican citizens could buy beachfront property, something that has changed as more Americans have put pressure on "growing the real estate market." Did you know there are now 1.6 million Americans living in Mexico often as digital nomads? Did you know that in order for Mexicans just to visit the US / Canada as tourists they must pay very expensive visas, often wait years, and very often get tourist visas denied? Are you planning on getting Mexican citizenship? Paying taxes? I hope you consider being aware of how you can contribute back to the community and celebrate local culture so this doesn't get lost as more people come from outside. I would encourage you to learn Spanish or other local dialects and use your platform to showcase these to your audience.

The problem in Peru is illegal gringos come and rent all the cheap places and sublet them for 6 × the normal rents. If something goes wrong they demand the owner pay for repairs. The illegals live high and contribute nothing to the economy. Now the Indigenous are building on the farm lands to make money. And they can't live in their own. Houses or eat properly because they can't farm.

Thank you for this comment. I’m also Mexican (living in Mexico City). The impact gentrification is having in my city is UNREAL. The displacement of locals, language, rent, treatment of people, the list could go on and on and on. Gentrification can also break down the social fabric of a country. As it was mentioned in the comment above, I truly hope you guys do things right. Pay taxes, encourage the creation of jobs in Baja California and Mexico, learn the language, avoid the “it’s so cheap to live here” mentality as it is NOT cheap for us to make a living in our HOME country. It is a sensitive subject as it is having so many negative repercussions for so many people. If you’re going to buy property, I hope you do our country right.

I do have to say that gentrification in Mexico is a real problem. Real estate is going up because of foreigners buying property there, making it impossible for locals to buy their own homes and driving up the cost of living for them. We need to be able to make more conscious decisions and think beyond our own interests. No hate here, this is just a topic that I consider to be sensitive but still overlooked by citizens from Canada, US and rich countries in Europe.
@Lizabeth90

Agree! It hurts natives because they are priced out from buying property from their home country. And I know it’s an escape from the harsh Canadian winter but it may still stay vacant for some months. So I’m a little torn & unfortunately won’t be watching this channel anymore. I wish them the best & I hope future success. But please everyone educate yourself about the gentrification of Mexico and many other “underdeveloped” countries.

Yes, I am Mexican, I love my country and it is so sad to see the people who built and care for the places foreigners love be displaced. It's happening all over Mexico, to indigenous and mestizo populations alike. We're losing our culture and our heritage. We can't compete with the disparity of wages and currency. Also the corruption and greed around real estate in beaches is disgusting. Displacements of locals by developers can involve violence, coercion and fraud... And let's not even mention the environmental impact, encroaching on biodiversity habitat for a vacation home...

Don't mean to pee on your party, but I'm with Eamon. House is on the market for a long time, then gets an offer above it's asking price as soon as a couple are interested in making an offer? 100% fishy. Under priced to attract interest, then over priced to start a bidding competition to gouge the gringos. I'd be looking for different real estate agent, TBH. Hey Buddies! What are you going to use for a septic system, while living on a sandy beach @ sea level? I saw sewer pipes carrying raw sewage to the beaches, the last time I was in Mexico. Rats & snakes in toilets, perhaps?🤔 Where does your clean drinking, bathing, and dish water come from?🤔 Doesn't the police presence and checking your IDs indicate local cartel activity?🤔 Who will protect your property, during the hot summers, while you're happily living in Canada?🤔 Being non-Mexican citizens, what protection do you have against your property not being sold during your absences and/or after your visitors visas expire?🤔 Please perform due diligence, before leaping out of the pan and into the fire. Your dream vacation in your self-contained van could easily become a logistical nightmare. Best of luck & best wishes. 😎

Really sad to be unsubscribing from you guys because I've been watching for years, but despite no bad intentions from you, this is an ethical minefield that I can't watch. I've seen you go from truly nomadic living to looking at owning two properties in rural locations, gentrifying two areas, in two countries, and only living in either part time. It's an issue that's affected my home country greatly, where rural property prices are pushed up by people coming from cities or wealthier countries, making them unaffordable for the existing community. I imagine it's even worse in Mexico with relatively wealthy buyers from North America. Please think carefully about the people you'll be unintentionally pushing out with your purchasing power and how you can mitigate your impact on the community or hopefully make this a net positive for the area you move to.

I mean this politely and with lots of love, gentrification in Mexico is a huge problem. Mexicans are no longer able to afford property in their own neighborhood and country because of the “cheaper” migration from the US/CAN. Even you’ve noticed the jump in american dollars since you first noticed properties. I would also encourage to tell all the other non-natives and van lifers looking for properties to not displace people or making their neighborhoods unlivable and unaffordable for them. You have CAN money streaming in from your work, which you absolutely deserve, but most natives cannot compete with that.

"For this reason I say, if one is whole, one will be filled with light, but if one is divided, one will be filled with darkness." Jesus said, "Why do you wash the outside of the cup? Don't you understand that the one who made the inside is also the one who made the outside?" Jesus said, "I am the light that is over all things. I am all: from me all came forth, and to me all attained. Split a piece of wood; I am there. Lift up the stone, and you will find me there." The property costs are rising because of non-naties moving to the land, there is nothing wrong with this but the issue is that it is pricing out locals, these locals also do not have a privilege to drive and live half the year in the USA or Canada. This is a huge problem and can lead to more corruption and a dilution of the local culture, customs and traditions. I hope you guys are considering all of this, i know you will do your best to be respectful.

You really need to check with a real estate lawyer BEFORE you buy. Mexico used to have laws prohibiting foreigners owning land close to the ocean. Unless that has changed, buying along the coast in Mexico could be very risky. I remember when the government came into Puerto Peñasco (at the north end of the sea of Cortes), and confiscated a bunch of properties owned by foreigners. Real estate agents will never tell you about the law (and whether or not you can legally own a property). They just want to make a sale. And just because others have bought and haven't had their property confiscated, doesn't mean that it couldn't happen in the future. Know your risks before you jump.

I know it seems unavoidable wherever you look…but as someone who has family that consists of native Mexicans (over half of my family)…it’s just hard/disappointing to see more people contribute to gentrification because one home isn’t enough. Todos is such a pretty town, but it has its issues. The fisherman barricaded Punta Lobos over the beach development there. Army came in and cleared them out. Then there’s the water rights issue-perhaps the biggest one-pitting locals against gringos. In my two brief visits there, I saw two political protests by locals over water rights. (“Locals” is primarily Mexican but does include some gringos.) Todos Santos is “paradise”, but there is trouble in paradise. I would go hang out at Shut Up Franks, have a few beers, and hear what the local gringos have to say. If your just hanging with fellow travelers, you won’t know. That being said, I will go back. There is no paradise. But Todos is a reasonable facsimile.

The rule books say only Mexican citizens can buy property. So foreigners with visas can buy land leases, and can sell it as a land lease but until full citizenship, no full ownership. So if your visa access is blocked for whatever reason, you can't access your "owned home". SO how did you get around those rules? My friend aged 70 is determined he will move there from Canada and build something to live out his life in. He is sure it's free healthcare for all, but that's not what official sites say. So do tell us viewers.

Good grief - As a human, they have the right to live any where they choose, as it is for others. Gentrification is happening EVERYWHERE. This happens ALL THE TIME whenever someone moves farther from a city center. So what you’re saying is that they shouldn’t buy property because it’s raising the cost-of-living for the residents. That’s ridiculous. Perhaps the country or area, should improve their economy. Pay a decent wage for instance would be a start. Why in the world would it be Eamon and Bec’s problem?

I have been a long-time follower and following the same line of thought of the more recent comments on gentrification, I have to say that I also felt uncomfortable watching this video. Coming from the colony of Puerto Rico, I have seen how foreigners moving in has slowly changed my island and has contributed greatly to a huge housing problem in the island. PR is very different from Mexico, but I think that we can all agree that Mexico has had a very complicated history with the US and other powerful countries as well. I know that this is happening pretty much everywhere in the world, but I just hope that you consider this move with a conscious mind. When you said that you loved the "community" and "culture" of the town and then proceeded to show white people speaking English, I was just shocked. I really love that you have started your shelter and I saw that at least one local has gotten involved with that... but is it enough? I don't know. I just wanted to contribute to the conversation. There's a reason Mexicans are fleeing that country everyday. I wouldn't want to count on healthcare in Mexico either. Why have the responsibility of a second home there when you could just be a snowbird and van life it during Canadian winters? Then someone below mentioned gentrification which only drives home prices up and pushes out locals who want to buy homes. I imagine you guys have given many things consideration. There are always issues when white privileged folks buy 'fixer-uppers' or other property in an area that then becomes unlivable for the local people. It seems that according to local Mexican people, this is what is happening to the Baja peninsula, especially in the era of 'digital nomads'. How will you ensure that your property ownership in Mexico is ethical and responsible? How will you add to your community, not just in terms of community events and fun energy and promotion through videos, but also financially and realistically to keep the area accessible for locals? Many folx already mentioned this, but I do hope y’all are considering the impact of your ability to buy property there. The more that well-to-do foreigners move to low income places, the higher rent/resources/everything becomes for EVERYONE there. Then locals who have been there forever end up not being able to afford to be there and get tossed out of their own homes- by force or because they have to in order to afford living. This consideration has nothing to do with your own relationship to the place or even to people you’ve met there, but rather the long term impact you will inevitably have on native inhabitants- and it’s insidious y’all. It’s never just “oh we’re only two people”…it’s a massive problem.
