Wow, Rhett. That last 3rd really hit home for me. As someone who was on the debate team, I ended up believing that you always needed to be right. It's a big part of my personality as well. I've even had friends say that I try to be right too much. I completely agree that it's about ego, and I have an extremely difficult time handling it. I hate it when my pride get's bruised, because I consider that a failure for myself. If I can't defend my point completely, I'm hard on myself and research it until I find where I went wrong. It's why I'm always learning. Even though I do study more and more, it has only cemented my beliefs thus making my ego even bigger which has harmed several of my friendships. You've certainly given me a lot to think about and a great direction to do so. Thanks!

I attended a conference recently with Cate Blanchett as the keynote speaker. She said, "If you need to be right, you cease to listen." That really resonated with me and made me reflect on past conversations where I was exactly in the mindspace that Rhett discusses. I'm trying to pause whenever I get that blinding, searing burst of egoism and really try to redirect those emotions into compassion towards the other person's experience and perspective. I think we need to have difficult conversations, but instead of arguing that your opinion is correct, we need to dissect why we hold those opinions.

I really love that Rhett touched on people connecting with their thoughts too much. That's a concept I was first introduced to somewhere on the Internet (don't remember where lol). There was this model, a series of concentric circles, on the outside were ones opinions on insignificant things and it got more and more personal until the center circle was someone's person: their sense of self. And the idea was that you don't want to link these circles too closely or a disagreement with one of those opinions (even the outer circle, the insignificant ones) can be perceived as a personal attack. It's a very interesting idea and I think it's important to think about and consider when someone disagrees with you.

We actually both love to debate. We think we’re having a fun mental exercise without our opinions getting too personal. But then it goes on so long, gets out of hand, and I end up in tears. Why does this happen? I probably identify way too much with my ideas, even on inconsequential things, and just need to win. I need my husband to think I am smart. Even though at the very end it seemed like he slipped into his old ways when he was trying to "convince" Link he was right about the futility of the human condition. Link recognized where the conversation was going and deflected Rhett. Then Rhett seemed to recognize what he was doing again and being a little embarrassed by it. I said something like this in the comments of the episode that Rhett referenced... The best way to feel selfworth isn't to get appreciation from people based on what's inside you, it's to make other lives better in ways that you keep private. Donate to a food pantry anonymously. You'll know that you've made lives better and that it had nothing to do with ego. You legit 100% helped others. Competition is the opposite of that. What's the point in proving worth if you're harming the worth of others?

Hey Rhett, a tip from a former Yellowstone Park employee here - there are a couple of AWESOME places in the park where icy cold mountain streams cross over underground thermal springs. Park Service employees often gather there in groups to swim and relax au naturel, under the stars. When its cold, you just move upstream, closer to the thermal spot (which gets boiling hot, so most people dont get too close to the dangerous heat), and when you want to cool off, you move downstream, which gets cooler the farther away you go. Magical. You can see all the stars, and its all rather misty from the steam, which freezes and gets sparkly on cold nights. You will remember it all your life.

This peaceful and inspiring conversation was what I really needed it this week. I appreciate you guys putting yourselves out there in so many ways but I hope you can always find experiences to keep for just yourself. Thats important for everyone to practice.

Rhett, I love that you visited my parts of the world. Alabama hills, Keough hot springs…are ‘nice’ (when no one else is around) BUT… the Artesians… even more magical, mythical. You can fish, you can swim, in beautiful mineral hot springs, you can just enjoy beautiful nature. Btw, I just had a nephew born a week ago and they named him Rhett! So happy for that. I am a GMM fan, or “Mythical beast” as you call it. But if you want a good example of nature in in Inyo County , let me know. I can give you the Deits. (I’m talking in “teen speak “ 😂).There are many beautiful spots, and🫣 hidden spots, in this valley that you only know about from “word to mouth”.

I can see so much of myself in what Rhett talked about in this podcast. The need to plan everything and the obsessive, fearful thinking about future possibilities when things don't go my way. the strong egotistical identification with my opinions that drives me to try to convince other people that I'm right even of when I don't really care about the topic of the discussion... These are all things I know about myself, but it was pretty enlightening hearing them from another person. Thank you very much for sharing!
