The only ways he would not ascend are 1) through some kind of severe mental and or physical condition that'll prevent him from effectively carrying out his official duties and if once he ascends and at any point he's deemed incapacitated in any way, more than likely, Prince William will be named as his regent, and 2) if he were to predecease his mother. He will not abdicate otherwise in favor of Prince William. That's how the line of succession works.
