I was a student @ UT the same time as Earl. He redefined the notion of a power runner, not just size and strength but speed. His first two years he was the fastest member of the Longhorn team. He is also as fine of an example of a man as there is. His current health struggles sadden me and I wish him many pain-free days in the years to come.

That Jack Tatum lick is still one of the greatest hits of all time and Earl still scored! Love that clip of the Steelers. He ran by about three HOF'ers and over two them.

Many do not know Earl was a great Linebacker. Earl covered the field from sideline to sideline. He knocked out a many of players on defense. He was a Linebacker at Dogan Jr High, Moore Jr High and John Tyler High School. We enjoyed Earl's as the best Running Back from his Junior High School days thru his years as a Pro. He has always been exciting to watch and play with. A wonderful man and friend.

Man,Earl was a BEAST. I'm a lifelong diehard Cowboy fan but I am a fan of the game and a real fan respects greatness and Earl was great. Sad that he wore down but man he was punishing while he lasted.

He was known throughout Texas when he led Tyler John Tyler High School to the state championship in 1973. He was a legend by the time he left Houston. In my mind, he's the greatest runningback Texas ever produced, if not the greatest Texas football player of all time.

Earl went through more jerseys that any player I ever heard of. I forget the game, but in his Junior year at Texas, they ran out of "20" Jerseys and he had to play with someone else's. Those torn jerseys are VERY prized by UT memorabilia collectors. And yes. Running through that one Rams defender is probably the hardest hit any running back ever put on a defender.

I remember that day i wish we could forget. Texas and Geogia in the 84 cotton bowl. They interviewed Earl in levi's, denim jacket and boots. Hershel: Fur coat, italian loafers and major bling.

the oilers trained at angelo state univ.when i went there and i got to watch this guy work out. he was shorter than i thought he would be but he was a block of muscle. angelo state had guys his size playing linebacker so i wondered what made him so special. the agility drills left no doubt. it was like watching a tape that had been speeded up. there should be no way a 230 lb. man could move like that. at least he could have acted like it was difficult!

@hairyhandedgent sadly, there is a price for being great. those legs once as strong as a grizzly are jelly and the man fast as a leopard can barely move an inch. im too young to know earl and see him play. but even tho im 22, he is imo the greatest back of all time. i watch all his old games that i can find. unfortunately all good things must come to an end, except one thing. his legacy, this man left an unforgettable mark on football. and he will be loved; we love you earl. god bless you...

Until he started to break down after a few years he was crazy fast, especially for his size. For a few years he was the best back ever. If you had to pick one back for one game in his prime many people would pick Earl Campbell.

Man...for a guy who's known for simply obliterating defenders, these clips show that Campbell had a great deal of agility and quickness for a big guy. His game was a lot more multifaceted than people give him credit for.

It amazes me to see someone so powerful outrun so many defenders. Anyone else agree that it seems like closer the camera is the scarier he looks when he runs??? I would hate to tackle him. I met him once when he had a bbq restaurant in Austin. Hes still a big guy, but its kinda sad because even when I saw him he was walking alright but it wasn't normal. It didn't look like too comfortable.

great video ' how bout HOFer Donnie Shell #31 of the Steeler Dynasty of the 70's taking a 15 yard ride trying to tackle Earl? And the classic Jack Tatum hit at the goal line. Of course Tatum got him down, but Earl kept moving forward somehow and got the TD A regular human running back woulda been decapitated, when it came to those vicious helmet to helmet hits, Tatum was a walking nightmare... but #34 kept going

Just because he's a longhorn doesn't mean he I think he is a total dirtbag! :) Earl Campbell was one of the best runners all-time, and he's a good guy too. I'm serious about having to play fullback - he'd have all the NCAA records if he had been a featured I-back. And the Oilers never helped him win games.

kind of true and he was kinda fast but I dont believe he was a 4.4 and you are right because of his power people forget his speed and I bet that most of these people are just people who watched like maybe 5-10 of earls power runs and thaught they know everything about him..... He was a fast guy he just prefered to go through defenders than aroundand I was alive when Earl was still hott (I was only 1 or 2 when he was playing) but I fell in love with football while he was still big

He ran a 4.74 (to be precise) and oldern RB's where nothing like todys RB's look at Walter Payton fast, agile and powerful but only around 200 lbs and look at LT fast, agile and powerful however 221 lbs Rb's are getting bigger to keep up with bigger Linebackers and Earl wasnt 245 lbs!! D-Linemen wear Like 250-290 in those days Earl was about 220

no ya I do I am right I meant to say he was 230 but that was a typo other than that I was right look at Deacon Jones he was a "Heavy" DT and he was 275 and when I say D-Lineman I mean DE's & DT's and DE's where like 250ish so Yes I do know football

Great video, but his best run was left off. I think it was against TCU or Texas Tech, but he took a toss, cut inside a kickout and jump cut back out. Then sprints down the sideline. When he gets to the 5, a tackler is about to knock him out of bounds, when he picks the mother fucker up and CARRIES his ass into the zone! The most unique back since Jim Brown.
